As such, Larnaka is abundant in historic and archaeological places, museums and ancient places of faith. But behind the well-known attractions, Larnaka’s narrow streets are filled with hidden gems. This booklet, which is issued for the twentieth consecutive year, aims to assist you in discov- ering Larnaka “behind the scenes”. Recommendations on new points of interest, events which will entertain you and get you acquainted with the Cypriot culture and of course, valuable tips from the locals. Every piece of Larnaka offers something special and we want to show it to our esteemed visitors. What I personally love about Larnaka is the fact that it has the atmosphere of a small city and the convenience of a metropolitan area. Larnaka has qualities that distinguish the region from other holiday resorts. You can rarely find a place which combines historic attractions, the commercial centre, cosmopolitan promenades and blue-flag awarded beaches together with numerous activities, all within a short distance. So, Larna- ka’s compact size is what makes the destination special, to- gether with other characteristics which can be revealed by reading this edition. The Larnaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry wishes you a memorable holiday! Make sure that when you de- part, your suitcase is filled with memories, nice feelings, new tastes, the stories of the locals and most of all, spiritual rejuvenation. A city with a con- tinuous and uninterrupted history. Larnaka is the third largest city of the Republic of Cyprus in terms of population. It hosts the main international airport, a port and a nice marina for yachts. It has clean sandy beaches with clear blue waters and an efficient tourist infrastruc- ture. The town is organized with everything that a large city can offer. The development plan of the city is extremely ambitious and it is already turning the wider Larnaka area into a field of investments and opportunities. The regeneration projects will unify the city center promenade with the popular palm tree –finikoudes pleasure and entertainment area. Furthermore, a number of other projects in the city are already under materialization and I urge you to find out about them by enjoying a walk in the city. Larnaka is worth visiting! Message from the Larnaka Tourism Board Chairman Mr. Dinos Lefkaritis On behalf of the Larnaka Tourism Board, I would like to warmly welcome you to the lovely coastal region of Larnaka! Larnaka is considered to be Cyprus’s oldest town. With a history of 10.000 years, Larnaka is the gateway to Cyprus and a magical blend of old and new. From its traditional architecture, authentic taverns and local handicrafts to its cultural sites and religious monuments, old Larnaka is an evocative glimpse into a Cyprus past. New and modern Larnaka harmoniously intertwines with the elements of ancient Kition and offers the cosmopolitan visitor beautiful sandy beaches, a bustling promenade lined with cafes and restaurants, brand-name shopping, advanced infra- structure and every conceivable amenity. • CYPRUS Cyprus in Your Heart
CYPRUS Cyprus in your Heart Life is the Journey That You Make It It is often said that life is not only what you are given, but what you make of it. In the beautiful Mediterranean island of Cyprus, its warm inhabitants have truly taken the motto to heart. Whether it’s an elderly man who basks under the shade of a leafy lemon tree passionately playing a game of backgammon with his best friend in the village square, or a mother who busies herself making a range of homemade delicacies for the entire family to enjoy, passion and lust for life are experienced at every turn. And when glimpsing around a hidden corner, you can always expect the unexpected. Colourful orange groves surround stunning ancient ruins, rugged cliffs embrace idyllic calm turquoise waters, and shady pine covered mountains are brought to life with clusters of stone built villages begging to be explored. Amidst the wide diversity of cultural and natural heritage is a burgeoning cosmopolitan life boasting towns where glamorous restaurants sit side by side trendy boutiques, as winding old streets dotted with quaint taverns give way to contemporary galleries or artistic cafes. Sit down to take in all the splendour and you’ll be made to feel right at home as the locals warmly entice you to join their world where every visitor is made to feel like one of their own. 2 Beachside Splendour Meets Countryside Bliss Lovers of the Mediterranean often flock to the island of Aphrodite to catch their breath in a place where time stands still amidst the beauty of nature.

  • Bird Watching in Cyprus a Brief Guide for Visitors To
BIRD WATCHING IN CYPRUS A BRIEF GUIDE FOR VISITORS TO THE ISLAND 1 Information on Cyprus in general The position of Cyprus in the eastern Mediterranean with Turkey to the north, Syria to the east and Egypt to the south, places it on one of the major migration routes in the Mediterranean and makes it a stop off point for many species which pass each year from Europe/Asia to Africa via the Nile Delta. The birds that occur regularly on passage form a large percentage of the ‘Cyprus list’ that currently totals nearly 380 species. Of these only around 50 are resident and around 40 are migrant species that regularly or occasionally breed. The number of birds passing over during the spring and autumn migration periods are impressive, as literally millions of birds pour through Cyprus. Spring migration gets underway in earnest around the middle of March, usually depending on how settled the weather is, and continues into May. A few early arrivals can even be noted in February, especially the swallows, martins and swifts, some wheatears and the Great Spotted Cuckoo Clamator glandarius. Slender-billed Gulls Larus genei and herons can be seen in flocks along the coastline. Each week seems to provide a different species to watch for. The end of March sees Roller Coracias garrulous, Masked Shrike Lanius nubicus, Cretzschmar’s Bunting Emberiza caesia, Black-headed Wagtails Motacilla flava feldegg and Red-rumped Swallows Cecropsis daurica, while on the wetlands Marsh Sandpipers Tringa stagnatilis, Collared Pratincole Glareola pratincola, Spur-winged Vanellus spinosus and Greater Sand Plover Charadrius leschenaultii can be seen.

Biodiversity Data Journal 9: e61349. https://doi.org/10.3897/BDJ.9.e61349 Abstract The leaf beetle Chrysolina (Chrysolinopsis) americana (Linnaeus, 1758), commonly known as the Rosemary beetle, is native to some parts of the Mediterranean region. In the last few decades, it has expanded its distribution to new regions in the North and Eastern Mediterranean basin. Chrysolina americana feeds on plants of the Lamiaceae family, such as Rosmarinus officinalis, Lavandula spp., Salvia spp., Thymus spp. and others. Chrysolina americana is considered a pest, as many of its host plants are of commercial importance and are often used as ornamentals in house gardens and green public spaces. In this work, we report the first occurrence of C. americana in Cyprus and we present its establishment, expansion and distribution across the Island, through recordings for the period 2015 – 2020. The study was initiated from a post on a Facebook group, where the species was noticed in Cyprus for the first time, indicating that social media and citizen science can be particularly helpful in biodiversity research.
