Caplan’s 1996 book : Structure, Processing and Disorders (Cambridge, MA: MIT Press) offers a comprehensive overview of the breakdown of language in and its relation to normal processing. His 1987 book and Linguistic Aphasiology: An Introduction (New York: Cambridge University Press) is an excellent introduction to the field and provides important historical background. A more practical approach to aphasia and its treatment is to be found in J.C. Rosenbek, L.L. Lapointe, and R.T. Wertz’s book Aphasia: A Clinical Approach (Austin, TX: PRO-ED, 1989, 1995). The discussion of the MEG technique was based in the overview chapter by A.C. Papnicolaou, P.G. Simos, and L.F.H. Basile in B. Stemmer and H. Whitaker’s Handbook of Neurolinguistics (New York: Academic Press, 1998). The discussion of was drawn from the rich literature that includes M.-L. Kean’s edited volume Agrammatism (New York: Academic Press, 1985) and Yosef Grodzinsky’s challenging proposals in Theoretical Perspectives on Language Deficits (Cambridge, MA: MIT Press, 1990). An alternative approach to Grodzinsky’s is well represented by David Caplan and Nancy Hildebrandt’s book, Disorders of Syntactic Comprehension (Cambridge, MA: MIT Press, 1988). A very readable and insightful book that offers an experiential perspective on aphasic disturbance is Howard Gardner’s The Shattered Mind (New York: Knopf, 1975). The material on acquired dyslexia is drawn from Deep Dyslexia, edited by M. Coltheart, J. Patterson, and J.C. Marshall (London: Routledge & Kegan Paul, 1980), and Surface Dyslexia, edited by K.E. Patterson, J.C. Marshall, and M. Coltheart (Hillsdale, NJ: Lawrence Erlbaum, 1986), as well as Y. Zotterman’s book Dyslexia: Neuronal, Cognitive, and Linguistic Aspects (Oxford: Pergamon Press, 1982). Finally, an excellent overview of recent developments in the field of neurolinguistics as a whole is available in the Handbook of Neurolinguistics, edited by B. Stremmer and H. Whitaker (New York: Academic Press, 1998).
