A1 to A3 were originally recorded by Armstrong when he was second cornetist in King Oliver's Jazz Band in 1923. A5 was first recorded by Louis with Alberta Hunter and the Red Onion Jazz Babies in November 1924. A4 and A6 were first recorded by Louis with the Clarence Williams' Blue Five in November and December 1924. B1 to B4 were all recorded by Louis Armstrong in 1925 as blues accompaniments to Ma Rainey, Bessie Smith, Clara Smith and Bertha "Chippie" Hill, respectively. B6 was recorded on the first Louis Armstrong Hot Five session in Chicago, November 12, 1925.
