Coronavirus

Staying ahead of threat US rushes in race to spot mutant viruses NEW YORK, Feb 6, (Agencies): Despite its world-class medi- cal system and its vaunted Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the US fell behind in the race to detect dangerous coronavirus mutations. And it’s only now beginning to catch up. The problem has not been a shortage of technology or ex- pertise. Rather, scientists say, it’s an absence of national lead- ership and coordination, plus a lack of funding and supplies for overburdened laboratories trying to juggle diagnostic testing with the hunt for genetic changes. “We have the brains. We have the tools. We have the instru- ments,” said Ilhem Messaoudi, director of a virus research center at University of California, Irvine. “It’s just a matter of supporting that effort.” Viruses mutate constantly. To stay ahead of the threat, sci- entists analyze samples, watching closely for mutations that might make the coronavirus more in- fectious or more deadly. But such testing has been scattershot. Less than 1% of positive specimens in the US are being sequenced to de- termine whether they have worrisome mutations. Other countries do better - Britain sequences about 10% - meaning they can more quickly see threats com- ing at them. That gives them greater op- portunity to slow or stop the problem, whether through more targeted contact Messaoudi tracing, possible adjustments to the vaccine, or public warnings. An actor’s actor Plummer got 3rd act worth singing about By Lindsey Bahr t’s one of the great Hollywood ironies that Chris- Itopher Plummer didn’t like the film that made him a legend. He was an actor’s actor and had cut his teeth doing Shakespeare. “The Sound of Music,” he thought, was sentimental shlock. And he wasn’t alone - reviews at the time were famously terrible. Then, like a personal curse, it would go on to be- come a universally beloved classic. He’d played Henry V and Hamlet and yet von Trapp, he said in 1982, followed him around “like an al- batross.” But even Plummer, who died Friday at the age of 91, lived long enough to soften a bit. And why wouldn’t he? He also got to enjoy something that so few actors do: A genuine third act with terrifi c roles as “60 Minutes” correspondent Mike Wallace in Michael Mann’s “The Insider,” a widower who comes out later in life in Mike Mills’ “Beginners” and, most recently, a slain mystery writer in Rian Johnson’s who- dunnit “Knives Out.” He got Plummer three Academy Award nomi- nations in one decade and, at age 82, would become the oldest actor to ever win an Oscar (for “Beginners”). He still holds that title. “You’re only two years older than me, darling.
