PETE ALONSO HITS ANOTHER HOMER…

Last week in his article for the Catholic New York, Cardinal Timothy Dolan wrote that and the Church will come back from the Covid crisis and will survive! I think that’s true. Each week here in the Church our numbers are getting better. Of course, baseball is a different story. The season started last month and while games are being played, it’s kind of odd to see no fans in the stadiums. Sometimes card- board figurines of fans have been placed in the stands to make things seem a little more normal. Hopefully, this is not the new normal! I saw a cartoon recently that showed a man, a Yankee fan, standing in front of his TV set waving his arms. His wife comes in shocked-and he says to her, “Honey, baseball’s back; we’re doing a zoom wave!” Well, many of us have learned a lot about “Zoom meetings” and other technology during these past months of the Corona crisis. While virtual is ok, there is not substitute for the real thing. Speaking about “The real thing” one of the most talented baseball players is Pete Alonso of our own . Nicknamed the “Polar Bear” because of his size, Alonso plays first base; and last year in 2019, he broke the major league record for the most home runs by a rookie with 53. He was also the first Mets player to hit 50 home runs in a season., although they never receive recognition at all. In baseball terms, Pete Alonso is really a superstar. However, he has the humility to recognize that baseball is not eve- rything in this life and that there are other people who are superstars as well, although they never receive recognition at all. Recently I read that the sent personalized video messages to doctors and nurses who “stepped up to the plate” during these past few months and gave of themselves. He also donated part of the money he earned in the homerun derby last year to the Stephen Siller Foundation and to the Wounded Warri- or Project. Alonso was quoted as saying that he was living his “dream life” as a baseball player and he wanted to give something back. Although I am a Yankee fan, I thought this was an inspiring story! I don’t know if Pete Alonso is Catholic; he did attend a Jesuit High School in Florida for two years. However, a very essential part of our Catholic faith is “giving back” in charity and service to others. In some ways, the Church can be considered as a team. Our coach is Jesus Christ and we are all members of that team. We joined it on a significant day of our lives-the day of our Baptism. Our job as a member of the Catholic team is to not to win a ball game but to get to heaven someday. As players on a team, we must look to the coach and his directions, so we must listen to Christ and His teaching. In the gospels (the playbook), our Lord gives us two fundamental teachings-to love God and to love our neighbor. The love of God comes first. That includes, prayer, regular confession and Sunday Mass. Secondly, our neighbor. Through the sacraments, Jesus gives us the grace to overcome ourselves and to “give back” as Alonso puts it. The one tendency that all of us have these days is self centeredness. Christians are not meant to “social distance” in terms of their charity to their brothers and sisters. Saint Paul reminds us : “We must not be selfish-not looking only to our own interests but also to the interests of others.” Let’s take our cue from Pete Alonso who is a true “all star” for the Mets. Let’s strive all of us to be “all stars” on God’s team so as the win someday the prize of eternal life.

Sincerely in Christ, Father Jerome
