Elias Boudinot, President of the Continental Congress (1782- 1783) and Samuel Southard, a New Jersey Senator, Governor, and Secretary of War and Secretary of the Treasury for Presidents James Monroe and John Quincy Adams, resided on site. Members of the Ross family were the most recent residents. The property can be accessed from North Maple Avenue--the route George Washington and his troops traveled from Jockey Hollow into Basking Ridge. French General Rochambeau also followed this route on his march to Yorktown. Oak Street Basking Ridge, NJ 07920 O Listed n The State And National Register of H ISTORIC PLACES In 1764, the Rev. Dr. Samuel Kennedy, pastor of the Basking Ridge Presbyterian Church, founded a classical school at his farmstead in Basking Ridge. The school prepared young men for college, with many going on to the College of New Jersey (later Princeton University). In 1809, the Rev. Dr. Robert Finley, Kennedy’s successor, built the Federal-style Brick Academy in the center of the village. Theodore Frelinghuysen, William L. Dayton and Samuel Southard were some of its prestigious alumni. Today, the Brick Academy serves as the headquarters of The Historical Society of the Somerset Hills. General Henry Knox and his family lived in the house while he oversaw the Artillery School, considered to be the first installation in America to train officers in engineering and artillery. The house is owned by Bedminster Township. The primary objective of The Historical Society of the Somerset Hills (THSSH) in 2018 was to create cultural opportunities and enrichment for the local community by providing programs and initiatives that inform, educate and foster interest in local history. Community Outreach In order to provide opportunities for the community to gain an understanding of our mission, and to raise con- sciousness of the historical heritage of the Somerset Hills, THSSH participated in many Somerset County and Somerset Hills history-related programs. Elder Voices Long time area residents came together at the Brick Academy for four sessions to reminisce and share their photos and memories of living in the Somerset Hills.
