This new edition of Newham Adult Learning Services part-time courses guide gives details of over 300 courses which will be offered from September 2019 at Adult Learning Centres across Newham.

There are many courses for you to choose How much do courses cost? from at times and locations across the borough. Award in Education & Training, City & Guilds Level 3 (Formerly PTLLS) MONDAY EVENINGS AT BECKTON GLOBE This professional course in partnership with the Mary Ward Centre, provides an introduction for those new to teaching and training, or those wishing to teach or train adults. It is designed as a qualification which will equip a wide range of teachers and facilitators with a ‘threshold license to teach’.

The C&G Level 3 course includes the following sections: Tutors role, responsibilities and boundaries of role in relation to teaching Teaching and learning approaches in the specialist area Session planning skills How to deliver inclusive sessions which motivate learners The use of different assessment methods and the need for record keeping

Candidates should be adequately qualified in the subject they intend to teach by virtue of holding an appropriate professional qualification. Candidates also have an initial assessment of literacy, numeracy and ICT needs and, in consultation with course tutors, need to plan to address any perceived needs in these areas. A good level of literacy is required at the outset of the course to ensure candidates’ ability to complete written assignment work.

ESOL

(English for Speakers of Other Languages) We offer classes from Pre-Entry ESOL to Level 1 ESOL to help you learn and improve your spoken English language from complete beginners to confident speakers. All our courses embed English, Maths and soft skills development. We offer unit certificates for the Gateway Qualifications Entry Level Award in English for Reading, Speaking & Listening and Writing at Entry 1, Entry 2 and Entry 3. We also offer the Gateway Qualifications Level 1 Award in English for Reading, Speaking & Listening and Writing. General Information • The above courses are run by Newham Adult Learning Service (NALS), part of the London Borough of Newham and the Associate Faculty of Newham College. • All ESOL, English and Maths courses are free for everyone. • To enrol on an ESOL, English or Maths course you will be assessed at one of our centres listed on the next page. Once you have been assessed, we will offer you a place on an appropriate course where the teacher will discuss and plan with you what skills you would like to work on. • All ESOL, English and Maths courses are part-time with a variety of lesson times available morning, afternoon and evening. Courses are normally 12 weeks long unless stated otherwise.

Learners can enrol for a maximum of three classes across all Newham Adult Learning Services centres. Family Learning 10

The Family Learning service provides a wide selection of courses, workshops and family fun days for mums, dads, grandparents, carers and their children.

Parents are able to learn or improve their English, Maths, ICT, Employability and Parenting skills and have the opportunity to take a City & Guilds National Qualification in English or Maths. The service also supports parents by guiding them through their child’s education and helping their children to do even better at school. Adult attendees can continue onto another course within Newham Adult Learning services or take up volunteering or employment. You can join a Family Learning course at one of the many sites across the borough including schools, nurseries and children’s centres during weekdays and at Newham Adult Learning Centres on Saturdays. There are also activities during half term and summer holidays in libraries and in Newham Adult Learning Centres. If you would like to join a Family Learning Course during the week then please contact your child’s school or your nearest children’s centre, week beginning 16th September 2019.
