We had a great time on the trip. We had some representatives from the Vandenberg and Santa Barbara clubs along with us for the trip. The most notable thing on the trip up was a stop in La Canada Flintridge to refuel the bus and get a bite to eat. I pulled out my PST Coronado and did a little impromptu public Sun Gazing. The Sun was pretty active with a number of platform prominences as well as the ever-present flame types. A distinct sunspot group in a very disturbed area of the Sun with a bright spot had me wondering if there was a flare in progress (There wasn’t.) The patrons at the tables outside didn’t seem to object to seeing the Sun either. I had a little bit of a scare when we first got up to the gate as a couple of people who were going to meet us there were nowhere to be seen. Fortunately one of them was already on the grounds and the other showed up while we were in the Museum. Relief! As it turned out we all went on the tour of the grounds. Our tour guide Greg gave us a tour starting outside the 60” Dome. He talked about the various Solar Telescopes -the old Snow telescope which was always a non-performer because of the design of the building- too many air currents. He talked about the rivalry over the 60 and 150 ft tower solar instruments (looks like UCLA won this one over USC.) And we got a good look at the 150 ft tower. -

The surveyed elements include proton-capture (O, Na, Mg, Al, Si), α-capture (Ca, Ti), Fe-peak (Sc, V, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu), and neutron-capture elements (Y, Zr, Ba, La, Ce, Nd, Eu, Dy). The analysis is fully consistent with that presented for twenty GCs in previous papers of this series. Stars in NGC 362 seem to be clustered into two discrete groups along the Na-O anti-correlation with a gap at [O/Na] ∼ 0 dex. -

Over the last ten years, Sandoval County grew by 17,273 residents for a total population of 148,834, a 13.1 percent increase. Faster growth was noted only in Eddy County, 15.8 percent, and Lea County, 15 percent, both in the southeast Oil Patch. Sandoval remains the fourth-largest county by pop- ulation behind Bernalillo, Doña Ana, and Santa Fe counties. The state’s population reached 2.1 million with 58,343 more residents, up 2.8 percent since the 2010 Census. The nation as a whole grew by 7.4 percent, the lowest rate since the 1930s, and compares to rates U.S. Rep. It is exceedingly simple and straightforward: the principal sequence for one system is superimposed on that for another by applying whatever vertical and horizontal shifts are needed to make their main-sequence turnoff segments coin- cide in both V magnitude and B — V color. When this has been done, any apparent separation of the two lower giant branch loci can be interpreted in terms of an age disparity since, as is well known from basic theory, the color difference between the turnoff and the giant branch is a monotonie and inverse function of age. This diagnostic has the distinct advantage that it is strictly independent of distance, reddening, and the zero-point of color calibrations; and theoretical isochrones show it to be nearly independent of metallicity—particularly for [m/H] < — 1.2. (In fact, if the cluster photometry is secure and the metal abundance is accurately known, our technique provides an excellent way to determine relative reddenings. -

Central Coast Astronomy Virtual Star Party December 19th 7pm Pacific Welcome to our Virtual Star Gazing session! We’ll be focusing on objects you can see with binoculars or a small telescope, so after our session, you can simply walk outside, look up, and understand what you’re looking at. CCAS President Aurora Lipper and astronomer Kent Wallace will bring you a virtual “tour of the night sky” where you can discover, learn, and ask questions as we go along! All you need is an internet connection. You can use an iPad, laptop, computer or cell phone. When 7pm on Saturday night rolls around, click the link on our website to join our class. CentralCoastAstronomy.org/stargaze Before our session starts: Step 1: Download your free map of the night sky: SkyMaps.com They have it available for Northern and Southern hemispheres. Step 2: Print out this document and use it to take notes during our time on Saturday. This document highlights the objects we will focus on in our session together. Celestial Objects: Moon: The moon is 5 days past new, really good for star gazing. Be sure to look at the moon tonight with your naked eyes and/or binoculars! Jupiter and Saturn are getting closer and closer, and on the 21st, they will be close enough to BOTH fit in the view of the eyepiece! If you start watching now, you’ll notice them draw closer and closer together. It’s pretty neat that this date also lines up with the Winter Solstice. This is the first Jupiter-Saturn conjunction since 2000, and the closest since 1623 (only 14 years after Galileo made this first telescope). -
A Study of Ultraviolet Spectra of Delta Sagittae A
A STUDY OF ULTRAVIOLET SPECTRA OF DELTA SAGITTAE A. AKALIN and S. ENGIN University of Ankara Dept. of Astronomy and Space Sciences 06100 Tandogan, Ankara Turkiye ABSTRACT. High resolution spectrum of the VV Cephei type star Ô Sge (M2 II + AO V) observed with the IUE satellite between 1979-1985 have been analysed. The radial velocity curves of non blended absorption features have been formed. Observed radial velocities are compared with the theoretical radial velocity curve due to orbital motion. We found that observed radial velocity variation is the resultant of radial velocity of hotter component and wind velocity around this star. The wind is perturbed by hotter component. Matching the UV continuum fluxes obtained from IUE high resolution spectra to fluxes of Kurucz model atmospheres yields Te=11000±500 °K. Thus the spectral type of hot component was found as AO. 1. Introduction Delta Sagittae - classified as M2II+B by Batten and Fisher (1981) and M211+AO V by Batten (1986) is a spectroscopic binary of VV Cephei type with an orbital period of 3720 days. Β type component is eclipsed by the atmosphere of the M giant.The system must have an orbital inclination greater than 70°, since atmospheric eclipses have been observed. The last periastron passage occurred in the second week of April 1990. Distance to the system was determined 300 pc by Reimers and Kudritzki (1981), 224 pc by Batten and Fisher (1981) and 170±30 pc by Reimers and Schroder (1983). 2. Observations We have collected twelve IUE images of Ô Sge from to IUE-VILSPA data bank, The spectra cover the period between May 26, 1979 and May 14, 1985.
