(Saturday, June 17, 2017) – Winchell Thoroughbreds LLC and Three Chimneys Farm ’s heavily-favored Gun Runner took the lead shortly after the start, shook off a brief challenge from Stanford on the far turn and drew away easily under jockey Florent Geroux through the homestretch for an easy seven-length victory before crowd of 20,669 in Saturday’s 36 th running of the $500,000, Grade I Stephen Foster Handicap President by GE Appliances at Churchill Downs. The 4-year-old son of Candy Ride (ARG), saddled by Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen , won for the third time in his last four races and the Stephen Foster victory secured the colt a starting spot in the $6 million Breeders’ Cup Classic (GI) at California’s Del Mar Race Course on Nov. 4. The race was part of the Breeders’ Cup “Win & You’re In Classic Division” series of races, which awards winners of its races an automatic berth in Breeders’ Cup Classic along with traveling expenses for the journey to Southern California. Gun Runner covered the Stephen Foster’s 1 1/8-mile distance in 1:47.56 – the fifth-fastest running of the Stephen Foster. The colt’s victory margin was a record and eclipsed Street Cry (IRE) , a winner of the Dubai World Cup in his previous start, who won the 2002 Foster by 6 ½ lengths.

May 5, 2017 Abel Tasman Wins the 143rd Longines Kentucky Oaks in Front of Rain-Soaked Crowd 105,100 Brave Coldest Oaks Day Since 1940 Just Shy of Setting the All-Time All-Sources Wagering Record LOUISVILLE, Ky., May 05, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Fans braved an all-day rain and the coldest Oaks Day since 1940 as Abel Tasman captured the 143rd running of the $1 million Longines Kentucky Oaks (Grade I) at Churchill Downs Racetrack. The dreary weather, which kept thousands of fans at home, still resulted in attendance of 105,100. The highest all-time attendance record for the Kentucky Oaks of 124,589 was set just last year under perfect weather. Wagering from all-sources on the full Kentucky Oaks Day race card of $48.9 million was down only slightly to 2016's record- setting total of $49.0 million and represents the second highest all-sources wagering on Oaks Day. All-sources wagering on the Kentucky Oaks race of $14.9 million was also down slightly compared to 2016's $15.0 million. On-track wagering on the Kentucky Oaks Day race card of $9.3 million was down 22% compared to 2016. On-track wagering on the Kentucky Oaks race of $2.4 million was down 21% compared to 2016's $3.0 million. TRACK PRESIDENT COMMENTARY "Congratulations to the connections of Abel Tasman and special thanks to all of our amazing guests who braved record cold and rainy conditions," said Kevin Flanery, President of Churchill Downs Racetrack. "Today's near-record handle numbers, despite the dismal weather conditions, shows that the Kentucky Oaks continues to grow and has established itself as one of the world's most popular events.

Her first mating is planned to be with Coolmore's champion sire Galileo (Ire). Bred by Northern Farm and raced by Toji Morita, Deirdre's first three seasons of racing were restricted largely to Japan, where she won five races, including the G1 Shuka Sho. She also took third in the G1 Dubai Turf on her first start outside her native country. Following her return visit to the Dubai World Cup meeting in 2019, Deirdre travelled on to Hong Kong and then to Newmarket, which has subsequently remained her base for an ambitious international campaign. WEST COAST Flatter – Caressing by Honour and Glory 2014 Bay l 16.2 Hands “An Eclipse Award winning champion, West Coast is by an outstanding sire son of A.P. Indy, out of a ChampionTwo-Year-Old Filly. West Coast earned a title as Champion Three-Year-Old Colt with five consecutive victories, four in stakes events, and ran 1-2-3 in six consecutive grade one events, including when capturing the Travers Stakes (G1) and Pennsylvania Derby (G1). He is by Flatter, a leading stallion son of A.P. Indy, and sire of more than 50 stakes winners, and out of Caressing, Champion and Breeders’ Cup (G1) winner at two.“ The offspring of West Coast will be free of Northern Dancer at four generations on their sire’s side, and Flatter has crossed well with a wide variety of broodmare sires from that line. The cross with mares from the Danzig branch of Northern Dancer has been particulary productive with seven stakes winners, including graded stakes winners Classic Point and Mad Flatter out of mares by Langfuhr and Honor Grades (who gives inbreeding to the dam of A.P. Indy), and there are also stakes winners out of mares by War Front – who appears particularly interesting here, giving inbreeding to Relaunch and a full-sister – Danzig Connection, Ghazi and Military (who would be intriguing here).

Besieged by setbacks and interruptions after claiming his juvenile crown earlier this winter, Team Casse has managed what seemed the improbable task of getting the talented yet famously headstrong colt ready to line up in the 143rd renewal of the Classic test. THURSDAY, JANUARY 25, 2018 GUN RUNNER DRAWS SIRES WITH FIRST RUNNERS IN 2018: WHERE'S THE VALUE? by Chris McGrath TEN IN PEGASUS This is Part II of a three-part series exploring Kentucky sires that offer the best value. To read Part I, click here. It's hard to know quite what Cairo Prince (Pioneerof The Nile) (Airdrie, $25,000) must do to live up to his phenomenal sales debut: very few sires get two fee hikes before they have had a runner. He caught a rising tide in sharing a sire with American Pharoah and Classic Empire, and then blew everyone away with his physicals. Things have gone so dreamily so far that he is nearly on a hiding to nothing, but if enough of them can run then even his revised fee could easily hold up. Having started with the highest fee of his intake, Will Take Charge (Unbridled's Song) (Three Chimneys, $30,000) punched his weight impressively with his first weanlings and his yearlings followed through to put him top of the averages, at $169,190. He represents a pretty obvious package, and soaked up a lot more action than some of his sire's other sons. SATURDAY, JANUARY 6, 2018 SHIFTING BACK TO THE CENTER GUN RUNNER, ARROGATE by Robert D. Fierro TO BATTLE ONE LAST TIME It appears that North American Classic winners are moving back toward the center of the breed, both phenotypically and--if FOR HORSE OF THE YEAR it were still being updated--by Dosage Index. Say what? If one can wrap one's head around that hypothesis stated in the opening paragraph, this could be very interesting news for those who have worried for about a quarter of a century that the breed was "shortening up"--in effect, no longer producing the types of Classic horses which breeders produced since the importation of *Nasrullah, *Princequillo and *Royal Charger. Let's start at the beginning. It is generally accepted that the most influential tool developed for assessing pedigree balance in the past half-century is the Dosage Profile developed by Dr. Franco Varola.
