For 117 years, children, adults, and families from Harris and surrounding counties have come to Family Houston seeking stability. Our caring, expert counselors and coaches provide personal guidance so our clients can develop the structure they need to flourish. Our services are more critical now than ever as our community struggles with the mental, emotional, and financial implications of the pandemic.Last year we served over 5,647 households representing the diversity of our city, through a wide range of ages and ethnicities.

Basic Needs: Case Management Family Houston assists individuals and families who struggle with ongoing poverty, as well as those who suddenly find themselves in need. Our case managers help clients: • Apply for programs such as Medicaid or CHIP • Locate transportation assistance • Obtain dental and medical services • Obtain utility assistance • Find food and housing

Last year 43% of Case Management clients improved their ability to access food

Mental Health: Counseling Family Houston provides professional, confidential free and low-cost counseling for children and adults, individuals, and families. Our licensed therapists can help individuals develop the coping skills needed to: • Manage depression or anxiety • Settle conflicts between parents, children, and couples • Handle issues brought up in divorce • Identify substance abuse problems

Last year 69% of clients improved or maintained their hopefulness about their future

Financial Stability: Coaching Family Houston’s expert financial and employment coaches help people understand their financial situation, generate goals, and reach those goals through education, resources, encouragement, and accountability. Our financial coaches help clients: • Find ways to manage bills • Reduce debt • Start a savings plan • Increase their credit score • Learn how to budget

Last year 71% of clients increased their household income

To create a stronger community for tomorrow by helping individuals and families meet the challenges they face today. 2021 Pillars of Strength Honoree - Jamey Rootes Jamey Rootes has been a community and business leader for more than twenty years. As past Board Chairman of the United Way of Greater Houston and past Chairman of the Greater Houston Partnership, Jamey maintains an active role in the community. During his two decades as President of the Houston Texans, Jamey oversaw the activities of the Houston Texans Foundation, which donated more than $32 million to youth activities. Following the devastation of Hurricane Harvey, Jamey worked with the NFL, the United Way, and others to raise funds for those affected by the storms. In total, all NFL-related entities donated more than $50 million for Hurricane Harvey relief and recovery along the Texas Gulf Coast.

A native of Stone Mountain, Ga., Rootes graduated Cum Laude from Clemson University’s Calhoun Honors College and earned his MBA with honors from Indiana University.

2021 Pillars of Strength Special Guest - Bryan Terrell Clark from Hamilton Bryan Terrell Clark is an accomplished actor and singer/songwriter who has performed in hugely successful Broadway shows and a wide range of popular television programming for various networks.

Bryan recently appeared as George Washington in the record-breaking Broadway box-office smash hit “Hamilton.” He made his Broadway debut playing the iconic role of Marvin Gaye in “Motown: The Musical,” which received a 2014 Grammy Award nomination for “Best Musical Theater Album.”

Numerous television appearances include NETFLIX “When They See Us”, OWN’s “Queen Sugar”, CBS’s “NCIS: New Orleans”, “,” “Person of Interest,” “Unforgettable,” “CSI: NY” and “The Unit.”

Bryan is the co-founder of inDEFINED, an initiative launched in 2017 that inspires and teaches young people to use their voices to erase constrictive labels in our society. The online apparel brand raises money for various charities and philanthropic organizations and supports arts education for at-risk youth.

Bryan graduated from the Yale School of Drama and Temple University. He is a native of Baltimore, Maryland and currently lives in Los Angeles, California.
