Biographie Toby Keith BIOGRAPHIE Par ROLAND ROTH ICCGE (Interclubs Country du Grand Est) TOBY KEITH SA VIE / SA CARRIÈRE TOBY KEITH est né le 8 juillet 1961 à Clinton en Oklahoma, et a grandi à Moore, une banlieue d’Oklahoma City. Il est le fils de Carolyn Joan et de Hubert K. Covel Jr. et a une sœur Tonni et un frère Tracy. Il a deux passions dans la vie : le sport et la musique. A 5 ans, il jouait déjà au football, et à 8 ans, il commençait à jouer de la guitare dans le club de sa grand-mère. Dans la High School de Moore, il jouait également dans l’équipe de football. Pendant ses études secondaires, il travailla dans des gisements de pétrole de l’Oklahoma et devint Manager d’opérations. 1 A l’âge de 20 ans, il créa le groupe Easy Money et joua dans des Honky Tonks locaux les week-end, tout en continuant de travailler dans le pétrole. L’industrie du pétrole en Oklahoma connu un rapide déclin et Toby se dirigea à nouveau vers le football et joua comme défenseur arrière dans l’équipe semi professionnelle des Oklahoma City Drillers, tout en continuant de se produire avec son groupe. Il tenta aussi de jouer dans l’équipe des Oklahoma Outlaws.. Après 3 ans chez les Drillers, Keith décida de jouer de la musique à plein temps avec son Band Easy Money en 1984. Il commença à parcourir l’Oklahoma et le Texas. Son Band sortit un single « Blue Moon » qui , passa dans les stations de radio locales en Oklahoma. Toby est marié depuis 1984 avec Tricia et vit avec elle et ses filles Shelley (1981) (belle-fille) et Krystal (1984) et son fils Stelen (1997) à côté de Norman, dans une ferme de l’Oklahoma. En arrivant à Nashville/Tennessee, il distribua des copies de sa cassette démo à toutes les maisons de production de disques de la ville. Malheureusement aucun Label n’était intéressé par ses prestations, ce qui le déprima. Il avait 30 ans et persista dans sa carrière musicale. Heureusement, un producteur de Mercury Record, Harold Shedd, avait reçu sa cassette démo, ce qui amena Toby à signer avec cette maison de disque qui produira son premier Album. 2 Son premier Single hit de cet Album « Should’ve Been A Cowboy » en 1993, a été N°1 au Billboard Country Single Chart et l’Album certifié Platinium. D’autres Singles ont également été en tête des classements comme « A Little Less Talk And A Lot More Action » et « Wish I Didn’t Know Now ». Toby partit en tournée à la rencontre du public, pour élargir le cercle de ses Fans en continuant de produire des chansons telles que « Who’s That Man », « You Ain’t Much Fun », « Does The Blue Moon Ever Shine On You », et « Who’s That Man ». Toby quitta brièvement sa maison de disques pour Polydor Records afin d’enregistrer ses 2 prochains Albums « Boomtown » en 1994 et « Blue Moon » en 1996 qui furent respectivement Album d’or et de platine. Toby retourna chez Mercury Records qui s’appela entre temps Mercurey Nashville, et rencontra James Stroud qui lui fit enregistrer « Dream Walkin » en 1997. Cet Album fut Album d’or avec les hits « Dream Walkin » et « We Were In Love », ainsi que le duo avec Sting, nominé aux Grammy’s « I’m So Happy That I Can’t Stop Crying ». Il quitta son label après des différents avec eux, pour la maison Dreamworks Nashville et sortira l’Album « How Do You Like Me Now ? » dont le single du même nom passa N°1 pour 5 semaines et l’album sera double platinium. Une des clés de son succès est son point de vue unique et son talent incroyable qu’il fait passer au cœur de ses chansons et de tout ce qu’il fait. Le 24 mars 2001, le père de Toby décéda dans un accident de voiture sur l’Interstate 35. Le 27 décembre 2007, la famille Covel a touché 2,8 millions de dollars pour la mort de H.K. Covel suite à la condamnation du transporteur Rodriguez pour défaut de freinage sur leur bus. L’Album sorti en 2002 s’appelle « Unleashed » enregistré à Miami. 3 Un des morceaux « Courtesy Of The Red, White And Blue » ( The Angry American) est une réaction de Keith contre l’attaque terroriste du World Trade Center et du Pentegone. Il joua cette chanson à l’Academy Of Country Music Awards en 2002. Dans d’autres titres également, Toby met en avant l’amour comme étant le remède contre les maux du monde entier. Un autre appel à la justice a été sa chanson « Beer For My Horses » un duo avec Willie Nelson. Son album « Shock’n y’all » a été un succès mondial dont le titre « Love This Bar » est à la mode dans tous les bars américains et d’ailleurs. Toby se déplaça en Iraq en hélicoptère Blackhawk et joua avec le guitariste Rock Ted Nugent pour soutenir les troupes de la coalition. Pendant ses déplacements, il visita également les soldats blessés en Allemagne. Toby a participé en janvier 2005 a une interwiew de Playboy Magazine. En août 2005, il lança son propre label de disques nommé « Show Dog Nashville ». Toujours en 2005, Toby a ouvert un bar, le « Toby Keith I Love This Bar & Grill » à Bricktown, Oklahoma City. 4 En automne 2005, Toby se lança dans le cinéma pour jouer comme acteur dans le film « Broken Bridges » en compagnie des stars de Hollywood Kelly Preston, Burt Reynolds et Lindsey Haun, dirigé par Steven Goldmann et produit par PARAMOUNT/MTV/CMT. Ce film est sorti le 8 septembre 2006 aux Etats-Unis. La musique du film est le love Song de Toby « Crash Here Tonight » Chantent également dans le film, Willie Nelson « Uncloudy Day » et Scotty Emerick « What’s Up With That ». Son album « Big Dog Daddy » sortira le 12 juin 2007. Il enregistra également un duo avec Jimmy Buffet « Piece Of Work » qui figure dans l’album « License To Chill » de Buffet. En mai 2008, sortira l’album « 35 Biggest Hits », un coffret de 2 CD’s. Celui-ci sera certifié Platine au mois d’août 2008. TOBY KEITH a écrit le scénario et joué dans son film « Beer For My Horses » en 2008, qui se réfère à la chanson du même nom qu’il avait enregistrée en 2003 avec Willie Nelson. C’est le 26 octobre 2008 que l’on pourra acheter son album « That Don’t Make Me A Bad Guy ». 5 Enfin, son 13ème et dernier album « American Ride » vient de sortir le 6 octobre 2009. La chanson « American Ride » cartonne actuellement sur toutes les radios des USA. Ses CHAPEAUX et COIFFES !! I was four years old when my uncle, Jack Henderson, the program director of 50,000 watt KCUL-AM in Fort Worth/Dallas, came to visit my family in 1959. He brought me around one hundred and fifty 45 RPM records from his station (duplicate copies that they no longer needed) and a small record player that played only 45s (not albums). I played those records day and night, completely wore them out. From that point, I wanted to be a disc jockey. But instead of going for the usual “comedic” approach most DJs took, I tried to be more informative by dropping in tidbits of a song’s background, something that always fascinated me. Originally with my “Classic Country Music Stories” site on Facebook (which is still going strong), and now with this book, I can tell the whole story, something that time restraints on radio wouldn’t allow. I began deejaying as a career at the age of sixteen in 1971, most notably at Nashville’s WENO-AM and WKDA- AM, Lakeland, Florida’s WPCV-FM (past winner of the “Radio Station of the Year” award from the Country Music Association), and Springfield, Missouri’s KTTS AM & FM and KWTO-AM, but with syndication and automation which overwhelmed radio some twenty-five years ago, my final DJ position ended in 1992.
