Case rejected 4 absolved in forgery

By Jaber Al-Humoud Al-Seyassah Staff

KUWAIT CITY, June 30: The Criminal Court has acquitted 4 defendants of the charge of forging official documents — traffic accident reports – for the benefit of certain people to help them benefit from insurance company funds. The Public Prosecution had charged the defendants with forging official documents, and helping obtain compensation from insurance company by fabricating traffic accidents. In court, defense Attorney Jarrah Al-Enezi said the inves- tigations were invalid because of their lack of seriousness and lack of criminal intent on the part of the defendants and the absence of the elements of the crime against the defendants. ❑ ❑ ❑ Case rejected: The Administrative Court, headed by Counselor Khaled Al-Kandari has turned down a request to cancel the decision to prevent unvaccinated citizens from traveling. In its decision the court said the requirement of vaccination in exchange for travel is not considered, what he called a ‘compulsion’, but this decision stands because the health of a citizen is above everything else. (AP) COVID-19 infections decline German unemployment rate plummets to 5.7% BERLIN, June 30, (AP): Germany’s unemployment rate de- clined to 5.7% in June as Europe’s biggest economy benefi ts from a sharp decline in coronavirus infections, offi cial data showed Wednesday. The unadjusted jobless rate, the headline fi gure in Germa- ny, dropped from 5.9% in May, the Federal Labor Agency said. The total number of people registered as unemployed stood at 2.61 million - 73,000 fewer than the previous month and 239,000 fewer than a year earlier. In seasonally adjusted terms, the unemployment rate re- mained at 5.9%, but there was a better-than-expected decline of 38,000 in the number of people counted as jobless. COVID-19 cases have declined to their lowest level in months in Germany, allowing authorities to lift many restric- tions - although they remain wary of the potential impact of the more contagious delta variant, whose share of new infec- tions has been rising quickly. Rises in unemployment in Germany and elsewhere in Eu- rope have been moderate by international standards during the pandemic. That is because employers have made heavy use of salary support programs, often referred to as furlough schemes, which allow them to keep employees on the pay- roll while they await better times. In Germany, the labor agency pays at least 60% of the sal- ary of employees who are on reduced or zero hours. The labor agency said it paid support for 2.34 million peo- ple in April, the most recent month it has estimates for. That was down from 2.7 million in March and far below a peak of nearly 6 million in April 2020. “At fi rst glance, today’s numbers suggest that the German labour market has already left the crisis behind,” Carsten Brzeski, an economist at ING, wrote in a research note. “At second glance, however, the high number of short-time workers should still be a good reminder of potential risks going forward, even if these risks look less threatening by the month.” ARAB TIMES, THURSDAY, JULY 1, 2021 BUSINESS 9

Eyes $4 bln from NYSE Didi touts tech spending BEIJING, June 30, (AP): Chinese ride-hailing service Didi says it lost $5.5 billion over the past three years ahead of its U.S. stock market debut Wednesday but it’s highlighting its global reach and investments in devel- oping electric and self-driving cars. The Beijing-headquartered company operates in 16 countries but almost 90% of the 493 million customers who used the service at least once in the past year are in China. Didi Global Inc. planned to raise up to $4 billion by selling 288 million shares on the New York Stock Ex- change at $13-$14 each. It said 30% will be spent on technology development, another 30% to expand out- side China and 20% on new products. The company founded in 2012 by Will Wei Cheng, a veteran of e-commerce giant Alibaba Group, says it aims to become the “world’s largest one-stop transpor- tation platform” and operator of vehicle networks. “We aspire to become a truly global technology com- pany,” said Cheng and president Jean Qing Liu in the prospectus. Liu is a former Goldman Sachs managing director and the daughter of Liu Chuanzhi, founder of computer maker Lenovo Group. Early investors included Apple Inc., Japan’s Soft- bank, Alibaba and Chinese internet giants, Tencent Holding Ltd. and Baidu Inc. Didi acquired rival Kuaidi in 2016 and Uber Tech- nologies Inc.’s China operation the following year, end- ing a battle in which the American company said it was losing $1 billion a year. China’s populous ride-hailing market has gone through abrupt changes as the ruling Communist Party tries to nurture development of technology while keep- ing control of promising industries. Founded as a smartphone-based taxi-hailing service, it launched ride-hailing in 2014 and expanded abroad in 2018 by acquiring Brazil’s 99 Taxis and setting up operations in Mexico. In 2015-16, regulators tightened control in what state media said was an effort to curb traffic conges- tion and prevent crime linked to ride-hailing services. Drivers were required to be residents of cities and towns where they worked and to be more closely su- pervised.

Dacus sings young love Cat album falters at fi rst but ends strong By Mark Kennedy ot to be totally catty, but Doja Cat’s third album Nstarts poorly. The first four songs — “Woman,” “Naked,” “Payday” with Young Thug and “Get Into It (Yuh)” — are half-baked tunes mimicking beats and vocals from Nicki Minaj or Rihanna. None are note- worthy. It’s depressing. What happened to the artist behind 2019s “Hot Pink,” a sonic breath of fresh air? What happened to the Doja Cat whose electric performance of “Say So” at the Grammys was reminiscent of Missy Elliott’s futurism? Just wait. The fi fth song, “Need to Know,” is a superb, steamy sex tape of a song (with Dr. Luke co-writing and producing) and the sixth, “I Don’t Do Drugs” featuring Ariana Grande, is airy and confi dent with heav- enly harmonies. “Love to Dream” follows, a slice of dreamy pop, and then The Weeknd stops by on a terrifi c, slow-burning “You Right.” Cat The Cat is back. From then on, the 14-track “Planet Her” rights itself with whispery pop songs and the envelope-pushing “Options” with JID, climaxing with the awesome “Kiss Me More,” the previously released single with SZA that has a Gwen Stefani-ish refrain and must be considered a strong contender for This image released by A24 shows Riley Keough, (left), and Taylour Paige in a scene from ‘Zola.’ (AP) song of the summer.
