Strobert, Ed.D., Joseph Stetar, Ph.D. Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Education Seton Hall University 2013 ii ABSTRACT The need for access to university education has recently become vital in Nigeria as a result of an increase in the college-age population and an awareness of the role of university education in the development of the individual as well as the nation. Recent admission policies of Nigerian universities have been dissatisfactory to the Nigerian public as many applicants and parents go through difficulties while seeking admission for limited available spaces in the universities. Universities take the task of admission of students into the academic system seriously, using the guidelines set by the National Universities Commission (NUC) and the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB). The National Universities Commission (NUC), which regulates university education in terms of standards, has set policies based on merit, carrying capacity, catchment areas, and quota for educationally disadvantaged states as criteria for admission into all universities. It has been argued that rather than these policies enhancing access to university education, the criteria restrict access to higher education. Each year, thousands of applicants sit for the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examinations and less than twenty percent (20%) on the average gain admission into the universities. This study reviews research on the historical overview of the Nigerian higher education system, organizational system of Nigerian universities, and scholarly views on the factors (such as inadequate number of universities/absorption capacity in Nigeria, lack of adequate facilities, and shortage of adequate manpower) and admission policies (such as carrying capacity, catchment areas, and quota for educationally disadvantaged states) that are responsible for the admission crisis in Nigeria and have a direct effect on parents and students regarding admission. The review iii concludes that the above factors and policies are the actual cause of the admission crisis in Nigeria, leading many parents and youth to face difficult challenges in seeking admission.     Chapter 12 Scottish Missionaries in Central Nigeria Musa A.B. Gaiya and Jordan S. Rengshwat In this study central Nigeria refers to the Christianised part of northern Nigeria—what was called the Middle Belt of Nigeria in the 1950s and is still referred to as such in present Nigeria’s socio-political rhetoric. The Middle Belt was created as a result of the Christian missionaries’ work in northern Nigeria, which began in the early 1900s. The area comprised of Adamawa, Southern Bauchi, Plateau,1 Southern Zaria,2 and Benue.3 This area was called the Bible Belt of the Northern Nigeria. This study focuses on Plateau and Southern Zaria. Missionary societies under consideration are the Sudan United Mission (sum), which worked in Plateau, and the Sudan Interior Mission (sim), which was dominant in the Southern Zaria area. Both missionary bodies had a number of Scottish missionaries. However, sim was a non-denominational mission, meaning that, once they were accepted into the mission, missionaries were expected to put aside their denominational convictions and apply themselves exclusively to evangelism. Since the nineteenth century, Africa has been a major recipient of Scottish missionaries. Notable are David Livingstone, the missionary explorer of Africa, a major exponent of the civilising impact of Christianity in Africa, and the implementer of Fowell Buxton’s theory that the slave trade in Africa would be extinguished through mission work and the introduction of free trade; Alexander Duff and James Chalmers, missionaries to India and New Guinea, respectively; Hope Waddell, of Calabar (South East of Nigeria), and Mary Slessor, who toiled in southern Nigeria as a missionary and a representative of the British government.

THE SOCIO-CULTURAL AND ECONOMIC FACTORS INFLUENCING PATRONAGE AND UTILIZATION OF TRADITIONAL MEDICINE BY HEALTH CARE SEEKING CITIZENS IN KADUNA STATE Abstract: Individuals all over the world continue to utilize traditional health care, despite the increased availability of modern medicine (TM). In Africa, a vast majority of people have turned their attention to Traditional Medicine for their primary health care needs. However, there is very little understanding of why this is so. Findings on why this trend persists remain little understood and there is dearth of data from research on utilization of TM in Kaduna State. To enhance the understanding of the factors influencing utilization of TM in Kaduna State, the paper set out to examine the socio-cultural and socio-demographic factors influencing utilization of TM. A multi stage sampling method was applied such that both quantitative and qualitative methods of data collection were used. Findings indicate that cultural affinity, accessibility and efficacy are significantly determinants of patronage and utilization of traditional medicine in the study area. The users reported high levels of satisfaction that are attributable to procedural factors. Significantly the services of TMPS are filling the unmet gap left by modern health care in the state. The paper concluded that there is a need for Kaduna State government to properly integrate and blend traditional medicine on the modern medicine because such reinforcement will be of immense advantage to the sick and humanity in general.

The “China” farmer management conditions in Nigeria is reported to be about cultivar at Kafanchan, Kubatcha and Kwoi as well as UG1 at 2.5 - 5 t/ha which is far short of yield currently obtained in most Kubatcha produced statistically similar yields of ginger by dry parts of the world.

The market-friendly reforms initiated under the Structural Adjustment Programmes (SAP), the deregulation policies, and the financial crisis of the states created an encouraging environment for the emergence of the private universities in Nigeria. The legislative measures initiated to establish private universities in Nigeria also helped the entry of cross-border education, which is offered mainly through private providers. At present the private sector is a fast expanding segment of university education in Nigeria, although it still constitutes a small share of enrolment in university education. The paper attempts to analyse the growth, expansion, justification and the challenges of private universities in Nigeria. The present study has been done by using webometric methods. The top 20 Nigeria Universities websites were taken for assessment. Each University website was searched in Alexa databank and relevant data including links, pages viewed, speed, bounce percentage, time on site, search percentage, traffic rank, and percentage of Nigerian/foreign users were collected and these data were tabulated and analysed using Microsoft Excel worksheet. The results of this study reveal that Adekunle Ajasin University has the highest number of links and Ladoke Akintola University of Technology with the highest number of average pages viewed by users per day. Covenant University has the highest traffic rank in Nigeria while University of Lagos has the highest traffic rank globally.

    Consortium of Universities for Global Health Annual Report 2017-2019 (Courtesy of UK Department for International Development) 1608 Rhode Island Ave., Suite 240 Washington, DC 20036 Page 1 Letter from the Chair of the Board and the Executive Director Dear Colleague, During these tumultuous times, the Consortium of Universities for Global Health (CUGH) continues to grow, diversify, and expand its activities. This may reflect global health’s capacity to be the interdisciplinary and cross-sectoral platform needed to address the complex challenges the world faces. Non-communicable diseases, environmental degradation, climate change, new and old infectious diseases, weak governance, technology, inequality and demographic changes pose deep challenges to achieving a sustainable future for all. Over the last two years we secured four important grants which have strengthened our political engagement and training activities. Our committees and working groups continue to convene experts across the global health enterprise to address numerous challenges. We were very pleased to complete our Capacity Building Platform, an online portal which helps to connect institutions in low resource countries with trainers they may be seeking; we also built an open access, crowd sourcing site that connects research questions with researchers; we created new working groups on Planetary Health-One Health-Environmental Health; Palliative Care; Equity; and Humanities; and we collaborated with our members to hold global health events outside the US (our first was with American University in Beirut). Significantly, we changed our mission statement to reflect our collective efforts to improve the health of people and the planet. Our membership continues to grow, with new members joining CUGH from every region of the world.
