2 @The NCHC | #NCHCHockey Weekend Update: March 29 Saturday Recap

UND Earns Return Trip to Frozen Four; DU, UNO Advance to Regional Finals UND defeats SCSU in West Region final; UMD, Miami narrowly edged Saturday

Saturday, March 28 In arguably the biggest day of the season for the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC), all six NCHC teams that made the NCAA Tournament were in action Saturday, taking part in five games that included two regional finals and three regional semifi- nals. Although the NCHC went 3-3 on the day, NCHC teams were involved in some thrilling games while one team punched its ticket to the Frozen Four and two others earned the chance to do so on Sunday. In an all-NCHC West Region final in Fargo, N.D., top-seeded No. 3/3 North Dakota shook off feisty third-seeded No. 13/13 St. Cloud State, 4-1, to earn its 21st trip to the Frozen Four, including returning for a second straight season. In the teams’ sixth meeting this season, SCSU grabbed an early 1-0 lead, but UND scored four unanswered, including the game-winner from junior forward Drake Caggiula in the second period, to win the region. Junior goalie Zane McIntyre, UND’s Hobey Baker finalist, was named Most Outstanding Player of the West Region after allowing just two goals all weekend. Coming up just short of a Frozen Four berth was second-seed- ed No. 7/7 Minnesota Duluth, which fell to top-seeded No. 3/3 Boston University, 3-2, in the Northeast Region final in Manchester, N.H. In a back and forth game, the Bulldogs fell behind twice but rallied to tie the game each time, only to see BU score on a power play with less than three minutes to play in regulation, which proved to be the difference. North Dakota faces the Terriers in one Frozen Four semifinal on Thursday, April 9 on ESPN2. Making history Saturday night was second-seeded No. 9/9 Omaha, which earned its first ever NCAA Tournament win in program history in its third appearance in the national champion- ship tournament. The Mavericks jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period and received goals from three freshmen to take down third-seeded No. 8/10 Harvard, 4-1, in the second Midwest Region semifinal in South Bend, Ind. UNO moves on to face fourth-seed- ed RIT, which upset overall top seed Minnesota State, in Sunday’s regional final, with the Mavs looking to earn their first ever Frozen Four berth. Sunday’s final can be seen on ESPNU and WatchESPN online at 7:30 p.m. ET. In the East Region in Providence, two NCHC teams were on display. In the first regional semifinal, second-seeded No. 6/6 Den- ver controlled much of the game to take down perennial power No. 12/12 Boston College, the No. 3 seed, 5-2, to advance to Sunday’s regional final. Senior captain Grant Arnold scored his first two goals of the season while senior defenseman and Hobey finalist Joey LaLeggia opened the scoring and sophomore forward Trevor Moore put DU in front 2-0 late in the first period. In the other regional semifinal, top-seeded No. 4/4 Miami fell behind fourth-seeded No. 14/15 Providence, 6-2, only to see the RedHawks rally with three extra attacker goals in the third period to close within one. Miami nearly tied the game in the closing seconds but couldn’t put the game-tying in the net as the Friars escaped with a 7-5 win. DU and Providence meet Sunday at 5 p.m. ET with a trip to the Frozen Four on the line. The game can be seen on ESPNU and WatchESPN online.
