This thesis attempts to probe into Oscar Wilde’s second collection of fairy tales—A House of Pomegranates, which is complicated and abstruse in aspects of language, theme and narration, compared with his first collection of fairy tales—The Happy Prince and Other Tales. The author contends that A House of Pomegranates, which is subversive of the fairy tale convention, is brought forward by Wilde’s aesthetic intentions—art is independent of life and immortal, thus, an experiment in aestheticism. The approach of textual analysis and comparison are adopted in this thesis. Index Terms—Oscar Wilde, A House of Pomegranates, aestheticism, experiment I. INTRODUCTION Oscar Wilde (1856-1900), Irish poet, dramatist, novelist and essayist, is one of the two most important exponents of Aestheticism in English literature. From the eighties to the nineties in the 19th century, Wilde wrote and published all his major works, including his famous plays—four comedies and one tragedy, his sole novel—The Picture of Dorian Gray, a series of critical essays collected in Intentions, two collections of fairy tales—The Happy Prince and Other Tales and A house of Pomegranates. His works, full of epigrams and paradoxes, reveal the ugliness of the bourgeois society and his unique aesthetic philosophy as well. -

One primary result of this exploration is a nuanced delineation of the aesthetic novel in its formal characteristics, its content, and most notably, in the sexually charged silences that both this form and content reveal—silences made audible to invested aesthetic readers through coded doubleness. Through thus defining the aesthetic novel and seeking to articulate the unspoken sexual transgressions that are, as is argued, requisite therein, this project sheds new light both on the partially submerged sexuality of aestheticism as a movement, and on why novels account for so small a portion of the aesthetic movement’s output—topics first raised in part by Linda Dowling, Dennis Denisoff, and Talia Schaffer. By engaging Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray (1891), Vernon Lee’s Miss Brown (1884), Walter Pater’s Marius the Epicurean (1885), Robert Hichens' The Green Carnation (1894), John Meade Falkner’s The Lost Stradivarius (1895), and Aubrey Beardsley’s Venus and Tannhäuser (1895), this dissertation demonstrates that, whether politically engaged as affirmation or using sexuality as a way to communicate rejection of middle-class morality and its own fascination with the unusual, aestheticism defines itself by its inclusion of unusual sexual situations. -

Sparks, Committee Chair Dr. Wayne Chapman Dr. Kimberly Manganelli ABSTRACT This paper explores four Wildean texts, their techniques, and their purposes, beginning with an introduction to Wilde’s life, contemporary culture, and his major educational and ideological influences—a familiarity that is necessary to understand his more subtle and subversive meanings. The second chapter deals with Wilde’s pre- incarceration texts, “The Decay of Lying” and The Picture of Dorian Gray . The essay serves almost as a guidebook for the writing of the novel and through similarities in theme and vocabulary, perfectly sets up a comparison with the post-incarceration works—De Profundis and The Ballad of Reading Gaol —which will be examined in the third chapter, along with various biographical elements which are necessary to any interpretation of De Profundis . -

A Reading of the Emotions of Salome: Sympathy for the Devil, or Fear and Loathing Diane Long Hoeveler n October 1876 Gustave Flaubert was engaged in writing what I would become perhaps his most well-known and successful piece of short fiction, "A Simple Heart." This narrative dissects the life of an innocent servant woman, ironically named Felicity, who rransfers her love and spiritual devotion from object to object until she finally settles, afrer life's many disappointments, on a stuffed and tattered parrot as the incarnation of her god of love. The horror of Flaubert's story can be located in his dark and cynical portrayal of love and spiritual devotion as a form of fetishism, a mad scramble for apparently random substitute objects to compensate for the original wound in the psyche, the primor dial fall we all supposedly make from a sense of original wholeness and self-sufficiency within the individual ego into psychic fragmentation. Felicity's pathetic stuffed parrot functions as a fetish, while fetishism-or the displacement of the sexual object by a metonymic substitute-stands in Flaubert as the originating source of both love and religious worship. 1 88 Diane Long Hoeveh Although often considered the exact opposite of a "romantic" work, Flaubert's tale is important as an example of what I would call the "post romantic residue," the reaction against romanticism that lingered in nineteenth-century literary culture, on the continent as well as in Britain. -

The Importance of Being Earnest
OSCAR WILDE [1854–1900] The Importance of Being Earnest Irish poet, dramatist, and wit Oscar Wilde was born in Dublin to a poet and journalist mother and a writer and surgeon father. A brilliant stu- dent, Wilde attended Trinity College in Dublin and received a B.A. in 1874. He then attended Oxford University on an academic scholarship, graduating in 1878 with highest honors. During the next six years he spent considerable time touring the United States and Britain promot- ing Aestheticism, a movement celebrating art, and published his first poetry collection, Poems (1881). In 1884 Wilde returned to London and married Constance Lloyd, with whom he had two sons. From 1887 to 1889, Wilde supported his family by editing Woman’s World magazine and contributing regularly to the Pall Mall Gazette and Dramatic View. He also wrote two collections of fairy tales for his boys, The Happy Prince and Other Tales and A House of Pomegranates, which were pub- lished in 1888 and 1892, respectively. In 1891, Wilde met and fell in love with Lord Alfred Douglas, precipitating the end of his marriage. At the same time, Wilde’s writing began to earn critical success; his four plays — Lady Windermere’s Fan (1892), A Woman of No Importance (1893), An Ideal Husband (1895), and The Importance of Being Earnest (1895) — opened to wide acclaim. Wilde’s only novel, The Picture of Do- rian Gray (1891) generated a whirl of controversy over its homoerotic themes. Wilde’s personal reputation was irreparably damaged by Lord Douglas’s father, the Marquess of Queensberry, who publicly accused Wilde of homosexuality, a punishable offense in Britain at the time. -

[Hedley Vicars Storey, author and bookseller, manager of the Shelley Book Agency, 1870-1929] to Christopher Millard [Christopher Sclater Millard, author and bookseller, 1872- 1927]; dated 14th February 1912. Storey writes that he has been unwell and has gone to Brighton to recover. He explains that he has written to a friend in Oxford who will look at Pan and get the information Millard wants, noting that he was not well enough to go to the Bodleian before he left Oxford but will write again when he hears more. He also writes that he has something to send to Millard and that he recently read Millard’s letter about Oscar Wilde’s letters [the title of the publication not deciphered] and that he bought one of Wilde’s letters two years ago and, although he sold it, kept a copy which he asks if Millard would like to see. He concludes by sympathising with Millard over his financial situation and explaining that he too has yet to make his fortune, noting that his partnership was the ‘biggest trouble of my life’ [the name of Storey’s partner could not be deciphered].
