NOVEMBER 17, 2019 2 Archeparchy News Coat of Arms Art Exhibit held at the Cathedral in Philadelphia

On November 9, 2019 at 5:30 PM at the Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Philadelphia, PA, Volodymyr Kaufman spoke about the artistic process on how he created the Coat of Arms for Metropolitan Borys.

The Coat of Arms of Archbishop and Metropolitan Borys Gudziak

The trident, the main element, is a sign of St. Volodymyr the Great's acceptance in 988 of the faith in the Triune God and symbolizes the fullness of Divinity. Its crimson color represents the sacrifice of Christ, the martyrs, and wine of the Eucharist. Gold is the color of Divinity and of bread. The Son of God becomes man and sheds his blood, accepting death on the cross to witness in this world to God's eternal love and glory.

The cross in the center symbolizes the Savior's Easter victory. Through the Cross – to the Resurrection. This devotion to Christ and the Cross is shown by the princes and passion-bearers Sts. Borys and Hlib, sons of Volodymyr, representatives of the first generation of the baptism of Rus'-Ukraine, and the first saints canonized on Kyivan land. Their bowed heads — vivid fraternal benevolence — exemplify an interpersonal relationship of harmony, peace, and joy, reflecting the interpersonal love in the Holy Trinity.

The motto Eucharisto Ευχαριστώ ("thank you" in Greek) stands for both the Eucharistic sacrifice and gratitude for the grace and generosity of God.

We, the faithful experience the life of the Church by means of the unending cycle of the liturgical year. The liturgical year is not simply how we mark the passage of time in the church calendar year. The liturgical year tells the story of God’s life in the world, a story in which we are participants, not just spectators or listeners. PARISH ANNOUNCEMENT November 1, 2019

“The hope of the poor will not perish forever” (Ps 9:19)

Dear Fathers,

Glory to Jesus Christ!

The theme of the message of Pope Francis’ message for the World Day of the Poor is especially important for us. As we prepare for the coming of Our Lord this Christmas, we read about the poverty of the Holy Family and their struggles to not only find a place to give birth to Our Lord, but also to seek safety from those who feel threatened by Him.

Many, if not most of our people in our churches experienced the same, no matter what generation. We can identify with struggling: finding a place to call home, a place of employment, benefits which enable us to be whole and so forth.

What drove that and still drives it? It’s hope. As desperate as people may become or a situation presents itself, hope is the one factor where people are motivated to better their situation. And they look to us as leaders of a local Christian community to provide for them.

Pope Francis wrote in his message, We can never elude the urgent appeal that Scripture makes on behalf of the poor. Wherever we look, the word of God points to the poor, those who lack the necessities of life because they depend on others. They are the oppressed, the lowly and the downcast. Yet, faced with countless throngs of the poor, Jesus was not afraid to identify with each of them: “Whatever you did to one of the least of these my brethren, you did to me” (Mt 25:40). If we refuse to make this identification, we falsify the Gospel and water down God’s revelation. The God that Jesus came to reveal is a Father who is generous, merciful, unfailing in his goodness and grace. He gives hope especially to those who are disillusioned and lacking in hope for the future.

This is our call and our duty, not only as Pastors but as brothers to those who are created in the image and likeness of God as we are also. Our mission is to offer hope.

Again this year, during the 40 Day period of Fasting, the Philip’s Fast, we ask that you again take the initiative to choose a social service project for your parish that will benefit the poor in your parish and local community. Please take the four steps as outlined last year:

1. Choose a social service project 2. Set up a team to run the project 3. Announce the project to the parish and community – set dates and ask for volunteers 4. Distribute what is collected or celebrate the event before Christmas

This year, we are doing this in solidarity with His Beatitude Sviatoslav and the Bishops of our Church worldwide which will be commemorated on November 17th. Please be so kind and inform us at the Chancery by December 1st what the project will be through this email: [email protected].

May Our Lord, the Prince of Peace and of the Poor bless you in your mission of hope and concern.

In Christ the True Servant,

+Andriy Rabiy Auxiliary Bishop

NOVEMBER 17, 2019 20 Catechism The Expectation of the Saviour

175 Liturgically the Church re-creates the expectation of the Saviour in the history of salvation by means of the Fast that begins on November 15/28, the day after the feast of the apostle Philip. This Fast lasts until the Nativity of Christ, and is appropriately called the Nativity Fast, or popularly, Saint Philip’s Fast (in Ukrainian, Pilipivka). During the course of this Fast, the Church prepares us for the luminous feast of the Nativity of Christ, reminding us of the consequences of Adam’s sinful lack of self-control: “Refusing to fast, the first Adam tastes of the death-bearing tree.”

176 The reading of the holy Gospel on the feast of the apostle Philip is full of hope for salvation (see Jn 1:43-51). Philip invites Nathaniel to become better acquainted with Jesus of Nazareth. However, Nathaniel has one reservation: “Can anything good come from Nazareth?” To this Philip replies: “Come and see” (Jn 1:45-46, emphasis added). Having met Christ, Nathaniel’s reservation dissipates. Herein is the task for every Christian: to “come and see,” in other words, to draw near to Christ in order to know him.

177 This expectation of the Messiah and the drawing near to him are fulfilled in the person of the Virgin Mary from Nazareth. Before all ages she was chosen by God. Mary, who in accordance with Tradition was introduced into the temple as a young child, spiritually grew into the “handmaid of the Lord.” God progressively prepared her to become the womb, the ark, the temple, and the dwelling place for the uncontainable God. “By the good will of God the Father, the Most Holy Spirit prepared a dwelling-place in her for God the Word.” Mary became the tabernacle in which the Word of God came to dwell in the fullness of time: “The Word became flesh and lived among us” ( Jn 1:14). In celebrating the Entrance of the Mother of God into the Temple in Jerusalem (November 21/December 4), Christians are called to follow her example, allowing the Lord to prepare them so that they may worthily receive God incarnate into the tabernacles of their hearts.
