The Avs are in a stretch that has them playing 12 of 15 at Pepsi Center.

NOTES & CONNECTIONS Brad Richardson was drafted by Colorado in the fifth round (163rd overall) of the 2003 Entry Draft and began his NHL career with the Avalanche from 2005-08.

IN THE CHRISTMAS MOOD • Mikko Rantanen extended his career-high assist/point streak to five games (1g/5a) with a helper on Thursday night in Los Angeles. Rantanen's five-game assist streak is the longest by an Avalanche player in over two years, since Gabriel Landeskog had a five-game run from Nov. 19-28, 2015. Rantanen has 10 points (3g/7a) in his last 10 contests and ranks second on the team with 30 points. • Nathan MacKinnon has a four-game point streak, tallying four goals and three assists during this stretch. MacKinnon, who ranks among the league's top 10 scorers with 40 points, is the NHL's top point producer since Oct. 28 (35-tied) and Nov. 1st (32). • Gabriel Landeskog scored Colorado's lone goal on Thursday against Los Angeles and has seven points (4g/3a) in his last three contests, which included a hat trick and his first career five-point game last Saturday night against Tampa Bay. • Tyson Barrie ranks second among NHL defensemen with 27 points (4g/23a), trailing only John Klingberg (29). He has six points (2g/4a) in his last four contests, which included tying his career high with two goals on Monday against Pittsburgh after equaling his personal best with three assists last Saturday against Tampa Bay. • Semyon Varlamov is 2-1-0 in his last three starts with a 1.66 GAA and .946 Sv% (181 min, 92 shots, 5 goals).

DRESSED TO KILL The Avalanche's penalty kill unit enters tonight's contest with a season-high streak of 19 consecutive kills, the club's longest run since extinguishing 25 in a row from Feb. 24 to March 12, 2016. Heading into the weekend, the Avs ranked 11th in penalty killing (82.3%), third at home (92.6%).

TAKE YOUR HAT OFF The Avs have scored three hat trick this year, tied for the most of any team, and the club's most in a single season since 2007-08 (3). Chicago, Washington, the New York Islanders and Winnipeg also have three.

MACK ATTACK Nathan MacKinnon leads the team in points (40), goals (15), assists (25), shots (108), power-play goals (6-tied) and game-winners (4). MacKinnon, who was tied for eighth in league scoring heading into the weekend, has recorded 35 points (14g/21a) in his last 24 games, tied for the most of NHL player since Oct. 28. Nathan has the most points (32) of any player since Nov. 1.

SCORING LEADERS SINCE OCT. 28 35 Nathan MacKinnon (14g/21a) 35 Josh Bailey (7g/28a) 35 John Tavares (15g/20a) 33 Blake Wheeler (8g/25a)

SCORING LEADERS SINCE NOV. 1 32 Nathan MacKinnon (12g/20a) 31 Josh Bailey (7g/24a) 30 Connor McDavid (8g/22a) 30 John Tavares (10g/20a)

TIP OF THE CAP(TAIN) Gabriel Landeskog recorded a career-high five points, including his second hat trick of the season, and picked up his 300th NHL point last Saturday night (Dec. 16) against Tampa Bay. Some notables on the captain's achievement: • First Avs player to have two hat tricks in one season since Milan Hejduk in 2006-07. • Notched four of his five points in the third period, becoming only the second player in Avalanche history (since 1995-96) to record four points in a single period. Peter Forsberg had five in the third period on March 3, 1999 at Florida. • Landeskog's effort marked only the second time that an Avs player tallied five points or more while recording a point on every one of the team’s goals. Alex Tanguay had two goals and three assists in a 5-5 tie versus the Canucks on March 3, 2004. • Joined Alex Ovechkin (3) and John Tavares (2) as the only players to record multiple hat tricks in 2017-18. • Second hat trick came exactly a month after his first (Nov. 16 vs. Washington). Prior to Landeskog, the last Colorado player to have two hat tricks in a span of 31 days or less was Joe Sakic in 1999-2000 (March 7-23). • After going 10 years without a five-point game, the Avs had two in a span of a month; Landeskog on Dec. 16, MacKinnon on Nov 16.

THAT NOT SO EMPTY FEELING With 10 empty-net goals this year, Colorado has already doubled its output from last season (5). Heading into the weekend, the Avs' 10 empty-net goals were tied with the New York Rangers for first in the NHL.

HEADING TO THE WORLD JUNIORS Colorado's top two picks in the 2017 NHL Draft, defensemen Cale Makar (fourth overall) and Conor Timmins (second round, 32nd overall), have been named to Team Canada's roster for the 2018 IIHF World Junior Championship. Makar, 19, is a freshman at the University of Massachusetts, where leads the UMass blueline with nine points (1g/8a) in 15 contests. Timmins, 19, is in his third season with the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds, where he ranks sixth among OHL blueliners with 34 points (6g/28a) in 28 contests. The world juniors begin Tuesday in Buffalo.

BUSY DECEMBER The Avalanche will play 15 games this month, including nine at Pepsi Center, which equals their busiest home December ever. Only twice before have the Avs hosted nine games in this particular month, also doing so in December of 2000-01 and 2011-12. This marks the second consecutive year that Colorado will play 15 total games in December, which also equals their most overall games in this month (sixth time).

YOUTH IS SERVED The Avs are the third-youngest team in the NHL with an average age of 25.6 (as of Dec. 22).

25.1 Columbus 25.3 Arizona 25.6 Colorado 26.1 Carolina 26.1 Winnipeg

MacKINNON NAMED FIRST STAR FOR NOVEMBER Nathan MacKinnon was named the NHL's First Star of the Month for November. The 22-year-old led all skaters in points (20-tied), assists (15), plus/minus (+11) and points-per-game (1.67) during the month. Connor McDavid also had 20 points but played four more games than MacKinnon. Nathan's 15 assists were the second-highest total ever by an Avalanche player during the month of November, trailing only Peter Forsberg's 17 in 1995-96. In fact, it was the most helpers by an Avs player in a single calendar month since 2002-03 (also Forsberg). MacKinnon, who's 20 points equaled the third-highest total ever by a Colorado skater in November, became the first Avalanche player to be named First Star of the Month since Craig Anderson in October of 2009.
