OUTDOORS Top 10 deer cartridges in America By MONTY STEPHENS Special to the Reporter

Florida’s general gun season for deer in Zone C (our area) opens November 3. Since hunt- ing season is just around the cor- ner, now is a good time to get the deer rifle out of the gun safe and head to the range. Its’ always interesting to see what calibers are the favorite for hunters. Just like chili, every family has “their favorite recipe” and to them, that recipe is the best. Deer rifles are the same. Some of us actually researched calibers and made a decision based on ballistic tables. But I think most of us just picked the same caliber used by our fathers, uncles, or good friends. Because shooting is a very pop- ular sport right now, determina- tion of favorite hunting cartridges cannot solely be based on ammo sales. It’s impossible to know if a box of ammo was purchased for an upcoming deer hunt or if it was used for punching holes in a target. But most manufacturers are reporting that the #1 center- COURTESY PHOTOS fire rifle ammo sold today is the The whitetail got its name from the white hair on the underside of its tail. .223 Remington. We’ve just been play- ing our speed and not theirs.” The Lady Timberwolves (8-12) shot out to a 10-3 advantage over the Lady Suns (5-14) in the opening set, thanks to a bevy of unearned points given up by Johnson University. FGC didn’t look back after that either – using a strong stands defensively to cruise to a 25-14 win. “That’s been the story all year for us is that our defense looks great,” coach Richie Tang said. “I think our offense still needs to get better. We throw too many balls away, like tennis, those are unforced errors…We have to be better to win conference games and help our cause. Because when we get to the con- ference tournament, we don’t want an unfair advantage [seeding-wise].” FGC gears up for another conference matchup on Wednesday night. The Lady Timberwolves look for their fourth straight win when they travel to Panama City to take on Gulf Coast State College. Riding their longest win streak in two years, FGC plans to keep the momentum alive as the conference tournaments nears closer. “We’ve had some great matches,” Tang said. “We just haven’t been able to close, and that’s one of the frustrations. SAFETY AT THE WHEEL Driving home a lesson FDOT earns praise for a new way to curb distracted driving.

From staff reports The Florida Department of Transportation was recently recognized by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials Committee on Transportation Communications for its efforts in increasing awareness of the dangers of dis- tracted driving in local schools. FDOT was awarded the 2018 TransComm Skills award for Best Interactive Presentation for its submission that focuses on distracted and impaired driving awareness. The presentation uses a combined approach of traditional edu- cational methods and interactive technology to keep students engaged. Last year, FDOT purchased the Virtual Driver Interactive simulator from One Simple Decision that allows students to experience the first-hand dangers and consequences of distracted and impaired driving. The program consists of sim- ulated drives, first-person consequence videos, interactive quizzes, and advice from experts through its Reality Check videos. Since then, several dozen presentations have TONY BRITT/Lake City Reporter been made to area students at career and safety Troy Roberts (standing), Florida Department of Transportation District Two Communications Specialist, helps Columbia fairs, as well as drivers’ education classes in High School student Christopher Simmons, 16, navigate his way through the FDOT’s Virtual Driver Interactive simulator during a program at CHS.
