DISTRICT COURT Slap ‘a case of mistaken identity’

A 37-year-old woman has been ordered to pay repa- rations following an altercation at the Methven Rodeo back in October. Mylee Krystal Watene pleaded guilty to a charge of common assault in the Ashburton District Court on Monday. The court heard from the defendant’s lawyer that it was a case of “mistaken identity” which the defendant had accepted when referring to the incident on October 25. Earlier that particular day, it is alleged a man in the crowd fell on the defendant and touched her inappro- priately, the court heard. Later in the day, the woman allegedly approached an individual who she believed to have been the man in question where she slapped him across the left cheek in retaliation. It is alleged she then said “now we’re even”. Although there were no injuries, Judge Dominic Dra- vitzki advised the defendant should not have behaved in such a way. Ms Watene was ordered to pay $250 emotional harm reparations to the victim. Guilty plea to contravening a protection order

After suffering back-to-back losses in the previous weeks, the Mid Canterbury club responded at the Ashburton Domain with a vital 43-run win over Swannanoa in their ninth round clash.
