  • WTC SUMMER HOMEWORK Read Charting the History of British Music Video (MM66), by Emily Caston. (BELOW) Answer the Following Quest
WTC SUMMER HOMEWORK Read Charting the History of British Music Video (MM66), by Emily Caston. (BELOW) Answer the following questions, drawing on the article for information and ideas. 1. According to the article’s writer, Emily Caston, how significant was MTV in the development of British music video production? 2. What criteria did Emily Caston and her team use for selecting music videos for their 6-DVD box set? What are your thoughts about the criteria? What music videos do you know that you would include in such a selection? 3. Bohemian Rhapsody is often quoted as being the first British music video. The article argues otherwise. Why is that? Why was ‘Bo-Rhap’ not included in the box set? 4. The box set is made up of six different categories: performance; concept; dance; stories; wit; portraits. If you were putting together a selection of videos, what categories would you choose to use? 5. The article ends by noting that videos are now consumed by millions globally, ‘uncurated on mobile platforms’. What might be the significance of a curated collection in light of these consumption patterns? Curating your own collection Imagine that you have been given the chance to curate a selection of music videos to represent your experience of secondary school, from the moment you joined until the end of Year 11. Select five videos that you want to include in your selection. Outline in writing what is significant about each video, both as an art form in its own right, and in relation to your time at secondary school.

What staned out as a.fun little hobby has mushroom-clouded into a rather popular underground extravaganza. I'm now gelling more out ofstate orders than Minnesota sales. I've got/en groovy reviews from Wisconsin, Chicago and California and people send me free books and eds to review. I've even had the pleasure ofpissing offsome tight-asses (and will no doubtedly do it again with this issue!) Yes, zinedom is the life! Thanks/or reading this shit! Big news! In special celebration of the 5th Anniversary Issue, I am very hooored to bring back one ofmy original co-editors to write some columns. And I can even reveal his true identity. Yes, the bitch Sarah Tynge-Mayhem from DB #1 is none other than Mssr. Michael Moeglin, the laziest, most talented· writer I personally know (besides Troy Tradup and Michael Dahl). He's back to wreak havoc on DB and to generally ... entenain! Welcome back Michael! About this issue: In addition to our regular columnists (write in to which ones you like and don't like), this is a retro anniversary of sequels. Hence, a new queer quiz, more men I'm embarrassed to like, and another drag hag review. Ifyou like these, go back and order back issues for the originals (SSP ALERT!!!) I always keep back issues in stock (WARNING! SSP ALERT!!!) and some loyal readers are even ordering complete sets for the perfect Christmas gift (WARNING! SSP JS NOW AT A TOXIC LEVEL!!!).

  • “Rapper's Delight”
1 “Rapper’s Delight” From Genre-less to New Genre I was approached in ’77. A gentleman walked up to me and said, “We can put what you’re doing on a record.” I would have to admit that I was blind. I didn’t think that somebody else would want to hear a record re-recorded onto another record with talking on it. I didn’t think it would reach the masses like that. I didn’t see it. I knew of all the crews that had any sort of juice and power, or that was drawing crowds. So here it is two years later and I hear, “To the hip-hop, to the bang to the boogie,” and it’s not Bam, Herc, Breakout, AJ. Who is this?1 DJ Grandmaster Flash I did not think it was conceivable that there would be such thing as a hip-hop record. I could not see it. I’m like, record? Fuck, how you gon’ put hip-hop onto a record? ’Cause it was a whole gig, you know? How you gon’ put three hours on a record? Bam! They made “Rapper’s Delight.” And the ironic twist is not how long that record was, but how short it was. I’m thinking, “Man, they cut that shit down to fifteen minutes?” It was a miracle.2 MC Chuck D [“Rapper’s Delight”] is a disco record with rapping on it. So we could do that.
