2020 PROGRAMS Our Mission Our mission is to provide an environment that inspires people to explore responsible roles in the web of life through physical, mental, and spiritual challenges. • Our programs respect different traditions and the search for truth. • The primary purpose of Unirondack is education, emphasizing the learning that results from experience. Programs are intentionally designed to challenge campers to examine their beliefs, to encourage campers to value the unique contributions of each individual, and to promote the development of a caring and inclusive community. • We interact, discuss, create, and play together—making friends that last a lifetime. • Unirondack warmly welcomes people regardless of age, color, creed, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation or gender identity/expression. • We are an alcohol, drug and smoke-free community.

A Brief Overview Unirondack is located on a peninsula on Beaver Lake in the western amid forever-wild forests. Our lodge, dining hall, showerhouse and residential buildings sit atop a hill overlooking beautiful Beaver Lake. Our performing arts pavilion, boathouse and art shop, campfire circle, cookout area, athletic field and swimming beach are located directly at the water’s edge. During the summer, we provide seven weeks of Youth Camps, a week of Family Camp, one week of summer camp for adults, and end-of-summer programs for adults. In the spring and fall we host retreats and offer programs for families, adults, young adults, teens and congregations. Unirondack’s program is tied deeply to our mission of creating a welcoming space for all people, a mission we are constantly learning from through our successes and failures. We encourage open discussions about sexuality, gender, race, religion, politics, and current events and support campers with questions they might be unlikely to consider in other spaces.

Unirondack Retreat for Writers, Composers, and Artists WEEK OF MAY 18-22 FOR CREATIVES 18+

Do you have a big project you want time to work on, but daily life is inter- fering? Come to Unirondack for an artist’s retreat this spring. Envisioned for writers of all kinds, open to a limited number of composers and visual artists, depending on the space requirements for the work you do. Please inquire.

The purpose of this one-week artist’s retreat will be to get away from the demands of daily life to focus exclusively on a specific project. Your project can be in the early, middle, or late stages, but you should have a clear intention for what you will do with this time. Each participant will have a private room equipped with a desk and a place for books, and the option to work in any one of a variety of common spaces. The retreat will begin with a community meeting, in which we will establish agreements for our time together, including how we will use spaces, when (or whether) we will gather to talk, and when we will take breaks from our work.

Unirondack is located over an hour east of Watertown, at the end of a very long driveway off a dirt road deep in the Adirondacks. The setting is rustic, with a long history as a youth camp, and offers a lake for paddling, a performance space, an art studio, and many spaces large and small which are ideal for curling up with a laptop or notebook.

Unirondack is an alcohol, drug, smoke, and vape-free community. All meals will be prepared by our experienced kitchen staff and shared in our dining hall. Assistance with meal clean-up is appreciated but not required. FEE: $200 to $400 for the week. Pay what you can.

Community Initiatives for Social Justice UNIRONDACK VALUES IN ACTION

We wanted to take some time in this year’s brochure to highlight some of the directions we are hoping to take Unirondack in the next 5 years. For many years now we have spent a lot of energy putting Unirondack at the forefront of the effort to smash the patriarchy and dispel the myth of the gender binary! Well, we obviously aren’t there yet. But with all of our bathrooms being gender inclusive, gender- inclusive cabins offered in all sessions, and extensive training with our staff and campers, we’re looking to other ways that we can expand our mission of doing good for our community and the greater world. Obviously, we won’t take any steps back in our LGBTQ initiatives but we also believe it’s possible to walk and chew gum! There are so many things that we are passionate about and things we want to do and we always aim to do more than less but here are some things we are willing to promise. We never claim to be a pure organization in any of our social justice initiatives and, in fact, consider an aim for purity to be a largely unproductive effort. We are simply on our path to learn and further educate from our own mistakes and successes as we grow as an organization. So here are the things on our organization’s mind: Unirondack and Climate Change: As is the case with many organizations, Unirondack depends greatly on an appreciation of outdoor beauty and the gifts of Mother Earth to build passion for our mission. Central to our belief in the interdependent web of existence is facing facts and being real with the effects of climate change that are reconstructing the future of the world as we know it today. Of course, there are certain inevitabilities to running a business that make it impossible to avoid waste or consumption. But this doesn’t mean we are unable to make an impact. Here are our goals for the next 5 years:

• Replace 50% of our incandescent lights with LEDs • Reduce the amount of products bought from WalMart or Amazon by 25% • Begin composting • Develop a camper carpooling system • Transition 80% of paper goods to post-consumer products • Transition 50% of our dairy products to Lewis County sourced

If you have ways that you think we can improve, please let us know. These are things we are always thinking about but they are easy to fall to the wayside when the chaos of a summer begins. Getting our leadership staff trained on the importance of these things, reminding our campers, and changing our culture to a more environmentally conscious one are keys to success in these initiatives.

Accessibility at Unirondack If you’ve been to camp in the past 3 years you may have noticed some of the changes we’ve made to make camp more accommodating to those with mobility assistance devices and mobility aids. Canes, scooters, wheelchairs, and walkers haven’t always worked well at camp. While we are far away from ever being ADA compliant, we have realized in recent years how many things we can do with modest change to our grounds that have a major impact. In the past 3 years we’ve built a ramp to Stevens, Woodman, Anderson, Upper Lodge and the Artshop. Work on our radar in the next 3 years:

• Finish grooming the path to reach the artshop ramp • Gravel the ramp bottom to reach Gilman more easily • Landscaping around the showerhouse porch • Landscaping around the back of the lower lodge • Create 3 outdoor charging stations for scooters/electric wheelchairs

Let us know if you have any other ideas! Community Initiatives Con’t..

Indigenous Education at Unirondack An uncomfortable truth: The land Unirondack rests on was stolen from indigenous people at the hands of violent European colonizers. While it’s also true that we as individuals or as an organization right now may not have had anything to do with the actions of our ancestors from generations ago, that doesn’t absolve us from action we can take now to right these wrongs. The first step is acknowledging these uncomfortable truths and refusing to allow an inaccurate narrative of American history to be perpetuated. Additionally, we can treat the land that Unirondack now occupies with the respect and dignity of those who cared for it before colonization. For Unirondack it was the Haudenosaunee (hoe-dee-no-SHOW- nee) Confederacy, a collection of six indigenous tribes who used to live throughout the Adirondacks. The Haudenosaunee people believed not in land ownership but in the belief that we are caretakers of the land we have and should treat it accordingly. Understanding that one day we may not live on or care for these lands, we should protect it for those who may be here after us. We know that we have a lot to learn and there is more that can be done but a great first step is learning and taking actions to prevent accurate information and history from being erased. Campership Program If you’re unable to meet the cost of camp programs, we have a robust campership program. We try to offer anyone who applies for a campership what we can and often pull from our operating budget to meet the needs of our applicants. The application can be found on our website or by Googling “Unirondack Camperships.” Apply by April 15. UUACCC Discounts Unirondack is a proud and active member of the UUACCC. Classic to all Unitarian Universalist acronyms, it has way too many letters, but it stands for the Unitarian Universalist Alliance of Camps and Conference Centers. Over the past 7 years we have held meetings at Unirondack, Star Island, Rowe, Murray Grove, UBarU, Ferry Beach, and The Mountain! Traveling to these different centers has given Unirondack an incredible appreciation for the missions of these organizations and a sense of unity that we are so proud to promote. We’ve exchanged valuable business strategies, marketing ideas, publications, applied for (and been awarded) grants together, and have entrusted each other with open and honest communications that I’ve grown to find invaluable. This year, we’ve decided to take our support to the next level to offer discounts to attendees of other UUACCC affiliated members! Here are the following 2020 discounts:
