    Big Brother Sweden: Critics force snoop law postponement By Global Research Region: Europe Global Research, June 18, 2008 Theme: Police State & Civil Rights thelocal.se 18 June 2008 Swedish lawmakers have agreed to postpone plans for the passing into law of a controversial surveillance bill following an emotional debate in the Riksdag on Tuesday evening. A last gasp appeal from the Centre Party was accepted by the government, which promised to strengthen the law with regard to civil liberties. Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt said his Moderate Party would back the amendments proposed by dissenting members of parliament in the governing coalition. Rather than facing a straight ‘yes’ or ‘no’ vote on Wednesday morning, the government’s proposal is expected to be referred back to the parliament’s defence committee for further consultation. Centre Party MP Fredrick Federley made an emotional plea to his coalition partners on Tuesday evening to rethink the proposed legislation. “The pros and cons need to be weighed up very carefully before reaching what is a very, very difficult decision. Certain issues are of so much greater importance than others that we must give them whatever time it takes,” he said. Federley added that signal surveillance could sometimes be necessitated, but not in the form set out in the current proposal. He then asked Defence Minister Sten Tolgfors whether the government intended taking further steps to guarantee the protection of civil liberties. Such a move would be decisive if he were to vote in favour of the law, said Federley. A year after the bill was first put on ice following pressure from the opposition, the government eventually agreed to take another look at the proposed legislation.

    The Swedish Sex Purchase Act: Claimed Success and Documented Effects1 By Susanne Dodillet and Petra Östergren Conference paper presented at the International Workshop: Decriminalizing Prostitution and Beyond: Practical Experiences and Challenges. The Hague, March 3 and 4, 2011 Introduction Sweden's criminalization of the purchase of sexual services in 1999 is said to be a unique measure: to only punish those who buy sexual services, not those who sell them. However this alleged uniqueness is questionable, and for several reasons. There are a number of other laws and regulations against prostitution, which effectively make Swedish prostitution policy similar to those countries in the world that attempt to reduce or eradicate prostitution with legislative means. Another reason the claim to uniqueness is doubtful is that one must examine more than the wording of a law or policy model ("it is only those who buy sex who are being punished") when analyzing it – one has to consider the actual consequences. For instance, a law against the purchase of the services offered in massage therapy, psychotherapy or sexual health counselling would obviously not only punish the buyers, but also carry negative consequences for those who offer the services. Therefore, to only focus on one of several prostitution laws, ignore its consequences and call this a "unique" policy model is either ignorant or a deliberate deception. But there are some aspects of the Sex Purchase Act that can be said to be unique. One such aspect is the way it has been justified by policymakers. The Sex Purchase Act was introduced by feminist policymakers who argued that prostitution is a form of male violence against women, that it is physically and psychologically damaging to sell sex and that there are no women who sell sex voluntarily.

Göran Palm & Håkan Sandström Abstract In this article we present a preliminary theoretical background and some empirical findings concerning a migrating trend between the fields of politics, PR and journalism: one day a political reporter, the next a communication officer; one day a PR consultant, the next a state secretary. To understand contemporary politics one must, we argue, comprehend the convergence between three fields of power holders that together form the realm of politics and communication: elite politicians, elite political reporters and elite communication/PR officers. Together, they form a communication elite that sets the parameters for the public discourse on politics. When politics is produced and constructed in, and through, social networks formed by elite agents from politics, journalism and PR, what does this mean for how democracy is worked out and what does it mean for citizenship in general?     Mjuka män och hårda kvinnor – en kvalitativ textanalys om hur kön gestaltas när politiker gästar Skavlan Författare: Emelie Hagbard Lisa Jalakas Handledare: Monika Djerf-Pierre Journalistprogrammet VT 2013 Abstract In this study we have explored how gender is constructed when politicians visit the Swedish talk show Skavlan. This has been done by using the qualitative textual analysis ECA (Ethnographic Content Analysis). Our theoretical points of departure are the interaction between politics and media, the structure of the talk show format and gender theories. Our premise has been that gender is a social and cultural construction that can be both reproduced and renegotiated. A central part of our study has been to analyse the balance of power in the conversation and how this balance may change. Our outset has been that everyone takes part in producing the discourse in which they act. To be able to map out how gender and power is renegotiated in Skavlan we have applied four analytical themes on our material: the interviewer’s (Fredrik Skavlan’s) role in the conversation, the politician’s role in the conversations, the themes of the conversation and how gender is explicitly made visible. Gender is made visible in various ways in the interviews. In general the female politicians are distinguished as deviating from the masculine norm in politics. However, we also found that the male politicians often are described and describe themselves with features that have traditionally been considered feminine. The opposite applies for the female politicians. Furthermore, we found that the male politicians spoke more about their private lives, while the female politicians focused on the professional.
