ACE's Scandinavian Sojourn
ACE’s Scandinavian Sojourn : A Southerner’s Perspective Story by: Richard Bostic, assisted by Ronny Cook When I went on the ACEspana trip back in 2009, it was by far one of the most amazing vacations I have ever experienced. In addition to getting to visit parks in a different culture than we see here, it is also a great opportunity to spend time with fellow enthusiasts and grow friendships while enjoying our common interests. When Scandinavia Sojourn was announced for the summer of 2011, I knew it was a trip I could not miss. Since the 2009 trip was my first trip to Europe I thought that there was no way the over- all experience could be better in Scandinavia. I was wrong. We landed in Helsinki, Finland around 1300 the day before we were required to be at the hotel to meet with the group. Helsinki is an interesting city and fairly new compared to many cities in Europe. Walking around the city you can see the Russian influence in the city’s architecture. In fact, many movies during the cold war would use Helsinki to shoot scenes that are supposed to be set in the Soviet Union. After making our way to the Crowne Plaza Hotel and getting a quick lunch at the hotel restaurant we decided to spend the remaining time that afternoon checking out some of the sites around our hotel. Some of these sites included the Temppeliaukio Church inside of a rock formation, the train station, Routatientori Square and National Theater, and a couple of the city’s art museums. -

The park first opened in the summer of 2017 and Zamperla was involved in both the first and second phases of the construction, supplying the venue with three highly themed attractions. One of these was a Magic Bikes, a popular, interactive family ride which sees participants use pedal power to make their vehicle soar into the sky. Also provided was a Disk’O Coaster, a ‘must have’ ride for every park and a best seller for Zamperla which combines thrills and speed to provide an adrenalin-filled experience. The third attraction was a Tea Cup, which incorporates triple action to create a fun and exciting experience, coupled to a high hourly capacity. And now Zamperla has also supplied an Energy Storm to the park, featuring five sweep arms which rotate upwards and flip riders upside down while also spinning. -
The American Dream
The American Dream America's latest shopping & leisure experience in New Jersey Many years ago so-called "XXL shopping malls" the urban shopping experience in concentrated form spread as a major trend from America to Europe and the rest of the world. The West Edmonton Mall, which opened in Canada in 1981 and was considered the world's largest shopping centre until 2004, set standards for modern shopping facilities early on combined with a wealth of entertainment offerings. The Mall of America in Bloomington/Minnesota (USA, opened in 1992) can also boast superlatives: with more than 40 million visitors annually, it is the world's most visited shopping mall. All these projects have a connection to the Edmonton/Alberta-based project developer Triple Five Group, a company founded by the Ghermezian family in the mid-Sixties and still owned by them. The West Edmonton Mall and the Mall of America were developed and continue to be operated by the Canadian company. The most recent projects of the Triple Five conglomerate include the new American Dream shopping and entertainment centre in the US state of New Jersey, the first section of which was officially opened on 25 October 2019 (see EAP News of 25 October 2019). In 2011 the Triple Five Group took over the retail project in East Rutherford, originally planned under the name "Meadowlands Xanadu", which had been under construction since 2004. The complex is now to be completed in four phases and will subsequently contain hundreds of retail, catering, entertainment and fashion offerings on an area of approximately 279,000 square meters. -

TAYTO PARK More Fun and Thrills with 4 New Zamperla Rides
SEPTEMBER 2016 ISSUE N 39 Latest news from the world of amusement by The Amusement Ride Company since 1966 TAYTO PARK More fun and thrills with 4 new Zamperla rides FINLAND HEIDE PARK PAULTONS PARK FAMILY AND TEEN THRILL FLY LIKE A DARGON DINO DELIGHTS Mirabilandia’s new Far West Valley Mirabilandia adds Far West Valley for 2016 Two new Zamperla rides are key elements of new themed area After a long period during which many parks added new multi-million dollar/euro roller coasters, a lot of operators around the world are now taking the decision to introduce new themed areas incorporating a mix of family rides and perhaps one or two major rides, such as the Zamperla Air Race or the Disk’O Coaster, as centrepiece attractions within the new section. One park that has done this for 2016 is Mirabilandia, Italy’s largest park in terms of size and second in terms of visitor numbers, with the introduction of its new Far West Valley area. Created on an area of 19,000sq.m within the park boundary, the new area features a number of re-themed existing attractions in addition to three new rides, two of which were supplied by Zamperla. One of these is a Disk’O Coaster featuring 24 horse-themed seats and a compact track of 65m. Interestingly, the park located the attraction at the entrance to the new area so that guests have to pass under its central hump to gain access to Far West Valley. And thanks to the impressive impact the Disk’O Coaster has made, the park has been using it as the main element in advertisements and promotional videos this year, conirming its credentials as not only a great ride but also as a fantastic marketing tool. -
Design of Roller Coasters
Aalto University School of Engineering Master’s Programme in Building Technology Design of Roller Coasters Master’s Thesis 24.7.2018 Antti Väisänen Aalto University, P.O. BOX 11000, 00076 AALTO www.aalto.fi Abstract of master's thesis Author Antti Väisänen Title of thesis Design of Roller Coasters Master programme Building Technology Code ENG27 Thesis supervisor Vishal Singh Thesis advisor Anssi Tamminen Date 24/07/2018 Number of pages 75 Language English Abstract This thesis combines several years of work experience in amusement industry and a litera- ture review to present general guidelines and principles of what is included in the design and engineering of roller coasters and other guest functions attached to them. Roller coasters are iconic structures that provide safe thrills for riders. Safety is achieved using multiple safety mechanisms: for example, bogies have multiple wheels that hold trains on track, a block system prevents trains from colliding and riders are held in place with safety restraints. Regular maintenance checks are also performed to prevent accidents caused by failed parts. Roller coasters are designed using a heartline spline and calculating accelerations in all possible scenarios to prevent rollbacks and too high values of accelerations, which could cause damage to riders’ bodies. A reach envelope is applied to the spline to prevent riders from hitting nearby objects. The speed and curvature of the track combined create acceler- ations that need to be countered with adequate track and support structures. A track cross- section usually consists of rails, cross-ties and a spine, while support structures can vary depending on height and loads. -
Gerstlauer's Delight
GERSTLAUER’S DELIGHT By Justin Garvanovic - UK Photo: First Drop Photo: First Drop oing to a factory to ride a new coaster a certain date, I could have a go, or 10! It was Gis always very special; in the nearly 20 an offer that was pretty much impossible to years of First Drop it has only happened on turn down, especially since a cheap fl ight was two other occasions that I can recall. For those available. interested, I had a visit to Pinfari to ride Xpress The ride that was built up at the factory was (see issue 55) and to Zamperla to ride Volare the coaster that would be heading to Duinrell (see issue 57). But this year Gerstlauer invited (Wassenaar, Netherlands) where it will open me to ride its slightly larger version of the new for the 2007 season under the name Rick’s Euro-Fighter coaster (the 320 model shown in Delight. Also under construction at the factory issue 71), and if I could get to Germany before were the two other coasters Gerstlauer has opening in 2007. First there’s Mystery Mine, the Photo: First Drop large themed Euro-Fighter that will be installed at Dollywood (Pigeon Forge, Tennessee). Most of the ride had been shipped, save for a few Photo: First Drop pieces of track that were being hand painted to look old and rusty, and the control system in the early building stages in the factory, was still there to be tested. The other ride, was another extended 320 model that will be heading to Adventure Island (Southend-on-Sea, Photo: First Drop England). -
Rides History Rides History SCENIC RAILWAY
Rides History Rides History SCENIC RAILWAY DESCRIPTION: The Scenic Railway is a wooden double out‐and‐back roller coaster. It was built at Dreamland in 1919/1920 and opened to the public in 1920. It is the oldest roller coaster in the UK and one of only eight scenic railways in the world. It is also the only roller coaster in the UK to receive listed status; being Grade II* - listed in 2002. A fire destroyed approximately 25% of the ride, including the station, lift hill and cars, in April 2008. Rides History HURRICANE JETS DESCRIPTION: The Hurricane Jets is a ride of the 1950’s, and one in which the riders can control the elevation of the cars by operation of a joystick. Supplied by the Lang Wheels Co. of Hillingdon, Middlesex, these were a popular ride at many parks, including Dreamland, although the one which has been acquired has spent its life touring with travelling fairs. Rides History 4‐ABREAST GALLOPING HORSES DESCRIPTION: Following the introduction of steam power onto the fairgrounds in the 1860s, it became possible to build much larger and more elaborate rides. Prior to this hanging dobby sets had been popular, but the natural progression was to a galloping horse. In 1885 Savages built their first Platform Gallopers for John Murphy from Tyneside. The same year Messrs Reynolds and King designed the overhead crank system which was improved upon the following year by Tidmans of Norwich. By the end of the century Crank – action Gallopers were being supplied by several British engineers, and as a ride has remained popular to this day. -
