2011 Census

July 2013

No 3 – Population by single year of age; and households

National Records of (NRS) published the first results of the 2011 Census in December 2012. The figures showed the estimated usually resident population of Scotland (by five year age bands and gender) and the estimated population of each local authority. All figures were rounded to the nearest 1,000.

In March 2013 NRS released a second publication containing more detailed figures for Scotland and figures for each of the 32 local authorities. This included population figures by five year age bands and gender, as well as the number of households in each local authority.

This insight describes the data in release 1C which was published on 23rd July 2013. It contains population figures by single year of age and gender, as well as households by the number of usual residents in each household and council area.

Falkirk Population

The population of the Council area on Census day 2011 was 155,990, an increase of 1,600 (1%) from the previous NRS mid year estimate.

The overall population of the Falkirk Council area increased by 7.4% across the period 2001-2011, suggesting a faster rate of growth than Scotland overall (4.6%), and subsequently other local authorities.

The change in population in the Falkirk Council area is shown below in Table 1.

Table 1: Population change 2001-2011 Age Group 2001 2011 Change (%) 0-4 8,234 9,339 13.4% 5-9 9,040 8,411 -7.0% 10-14 9,229 8,848 -4.1% 15-19 8,853 9,321 5.3% 20-24 8,204 8,802 7.3% 25-29 9,074 9,310 2.6% 30-34 11,399 9,793 -14.1% 35-39 11,784 11,261 -4.4% 40-44 10,766 12,598 17.0% 45-49 9,493 12,429 30.9% 50-54 10,468 11,045 5.5% 55-59 8,460 9,473 12.0% 60-64 7,829 10,064 28.6% 65-69 6,780 7,551 11.4% 70-74 5,802 6,500 12.0% 75-79 4,647 5,060 8.9% 80-84 2,918 3,397 16.4% 85-89 1,531 1,925 25.7% 90+ 759 863 13.7% Total 145,270 155,990 7.4%

While the overall population increased considerably, decreases can be seen in the “5-9”, “10-14”, “30-34” and “35-39” age groups. When compared to Scotland, decreases can be seen in the same groups highlighting the population in Falkirk coincides with national figures. However, while in Falkirk there was only a 4.4% decrease in the population of those ages 35-39, in Scotland overall there was a 15.6% change. Similarly, the changes to the Falkirk population in the “5-9” and “10-14” age groups are significantly lower than those in Scotland as a whole.

Furthermore, Table 1 highlights that significant growth occurred in the 60+ population over the time period, echoing current research into the growth of the elderly population and the provision of sustainable services.

There were 76,150 (48.8% of the total population) males and 79,840 (51.2%) females residing in the Falkirk Council area in 2011. This highlights a slight shift from the 2001 Census figure in which 48.2% of the total population of Falkirk were male and 51.8% of the population were female.

Figure 1 shows the population of Falkirk by five year age band and gender.

Figure 1 highlights the number of females in the 60+ age groups are consistently higher than the number of males, continuing a long term trend and coinciding with a higher life expectancy for females.

The number of households in 2011 with usual residents in the Falkirk Council area was 68,732, an increase of 9.8% since the 2001 Census.

Figure 2 shows the number of usual residents within each household by percentage of households in Falkirk, , and Scotland overall.

Figure 2: Number of usual residents by percentage of household

In the Falkirk Council area 35.2% of households had two usual residents, followed by 31.7% of households with only one usual resident. This reflects the trend in recent years towards two person households and a move away from households of five or more people. The average household size in Falkirk in 2011 was 2.29 persons.

Little variation can be witnessed between Falkirk and the surrounding local authorities, though Scotland overall has slightly more single person households.
