Alumbaugh, B.A. Denton, Texas May, 1996 Alumbaugh, Andrew E., Hooking Mortality of Laraemouth Bass Caught On Controversial Artificial Lures and Live Bait - Lake Ray Roberts. Texas. Master of Science (Environmental Science), May 1996, 51 pp., 4 tables, 6 figures, references, 24 titles. A total of 192 largemouth bass were caught at Lake Ray Roberts, Texas (1995) to investigate five controversial bass angling techniques relative to hooking mortality. The bait types were Texas-rigged scented and non-scented plastic worms, Carolina-rigged scented and non-scented plastic worms, and live golden shiners. Overall hooking mortality was 21.87% and mortality was dependent upon bait type. Highest mortality resulted from the Texas-rigged scented lures, while the lowest mortality was generated by live golden shiners. A creel survey indicated that few anglers were having success with the investigated baits. Factors that had a confirmed effect on hooking mortality were hooking location and water temperature. Hooking mortality was not excessive compared to other similar studies.

  • Fishing Big Smallmouth Swim Jigs
Fishing Big Smallmouth Swim Jigs Every angler is looking for a lure that catches big fish. There are several lures that at any given time will catch their fair share of lunkers, but conditions need to be just right. Topwater baits, for example, catch a high percentage of big fish, but if you are fishing after a cold front and dealing with high winds, forget it. One bait that consistently shines under adverse conditions is a swimbait. Swimbaits are designed to be cast and retrieved at a steady, rapid rate. Similar to a spinnerbait or crankbait, the lure provides the action. The entire body shimmies as you pull a swimbait through the water. They are relatively easy to use but they do take a bit of getting used to. The problem is not in the retrieve but in the hook set. If you react to a swimbait like you would to a spinnerbait you will miss a lot of fish. This makes them frustrating for new users. Smallmouth bass usually hammer a spinnerbait or crankbait. The thumping action of the swimbait causes smallmouth to follow the swimbait for a longer period of time. Sometimes they fully commit and just smoke it while at other times they leave it alone and can follow the bait back to the boat. Most of the time they just tease the angler by bumping the swimbait, resulting in missed fish. When I first started fishing swimbaits it took a while to build up my confidence due to all the missed fish. I experimented with different speeds of my retrieve but the results were the same.

  • FISHING TERMINOLOGY There Is Lots of Great Tackle Available Here Are Some Terms of Basic Tackle Items and Techniques to Help You Get Started
NAMES YOU NEED TO KNOW – FISHING TERMINOLOGY There is lots of great tackle available Here are some terms of basic tackle items and techniques to help you get started. • ROD – A long lever, usually made of fiberglass, graphite or composite materials and used to catch fish. Different types are available, such as rods for spinning, fly fishing, spincast, bait casting, boat fishing, offshore trolling, surf fishing, jetty/pier fishing, etc. Most rods have a reel-holding clamp and guides through which the line runs. • REEL – A mechanical device for holding and spooling fishing line. Reels have a line spool, brake to slow running fish, handle to retrieve line and foot for clamping to a rod. Reel styles include CASTING (revolving spool), SPINNING (line coiling off stationary spool); SPINCAST, (like spinning but with a nose cone), and FLY (storing thick fly line/backing and to fight big fish). Open-Face Spinning Reel Closed-Face Spinning Reel Bait Casting Reel Fly Reel • LINE – Specialized "string" used for fishing. Nylon monofilament line is the most popular. Other lines are made of different materials, including braided fibers and wire. FLY LINE is a specialized line made of a plastic coating on a core, and often made tapered (changing diameter) to make fly casting easier. (To preserve good fishing, take any discarded line with you when you leave. Discarded line can snag and harm wildlife, and kill fish, turtles, frogs, birds and small mammals.) • LEADER – A length of monofilament, wire or other stranded material tied between the end of the line and the lure or hook.

  • Flucuating Tides Fishing Crankbaits
The California Delta is located 30 miles east of San Francisco Bay, where the Sacramento, San Joaquin and other rivers widen and braid into many side channels, sloughs and points of land. The Delta, as it’s often referred to, is regarded as one of the five best bass fishing destinations in America; and while Largemouth Bass are the target species for most anglers, there are many other fish types available, including Spotted and Smallmouth Bass, Perch, Sunfish, Crappie, Bluegill, Stripers, and Salmon. I’ve caught the fish listed above and more while targeting Black Bass from this angling wonderland. Although you can catch bass from the Delta all year long, the best fishing can be had from March through November. While many of the Black Bass average 2-to-3 pounds, fish weighing in at 7-to-10 pounds The Timber Tiger by Yakima Bait is a highly effective crankbait are common. Although fish larger than 10 pounds are caught less on the Sacramento River Delta. frequently, they do exist; for example, on one recent year my clients and I landed 13 Black Bass that weighed in excess of 10 pounds. The largest bass I’ve landed is a 15.56 pound monster taken in 2012. Just for the FLUCUATING TIDES record, the biggest Largemouth Bass taken from the California Delta Keep in mind that ocean tides affect the Delta with daily fluctuations that tipped the scale at over 19 pounds. can change the water level as much as 3-to-4 feet and play an important role in where bass can be found.
