Cougar Corner: HNA Joins Celebration for Women in Sports; Spring-Sports Tryout Schedules Set

National Girls and Women in Sport Day: Feb. 6 Wednesday, February 6, marks the 33rd annual National Girls & Women in Sports Day, a day to celebrate the extraordinary achievements of women and girls in U.S. athletics. The Women’s Sports Foundation has asked girls and women around the country to share how they are celebrating the “Lead Her Forward” theme, which honors the many ways that sports push girls and women to achieve excellence and realize their boundless potential. HNA will feature stories that day of how sports has helped students and faculty/staff alike achieve excellence and realize their potential. The stories will be shared on the school’s Instagram and Facebook. Also, students will be encouraged to “rep their sport” by wearing their National Girls & Women in favorite team’s gear on February 6. Sports Day: HNA will celebrate on Wednesday (Feb. 6). Basketball Records (as of Jan. 31): Varsity: 12–7 (9–5 in play), JV: 13–4, JVC: 7–4. Highlights: Varsity hoops heads into tonight’s (Friday, February 1) regular-season finale battling for second place in the Metro League Mountain Division, buoyed by a big home win over division rival Bishop Blanchet on January 18. The JV team wraps up a strong season tonight at home. The JVC Cougars finished their season with a home win versus Roosevelt on January 25. Standouts: Hannah Martin ’20 and Adrienne Johnson ’20 lead the Cougars in scoring; Adrienne also leads in rebounds. Tonight is Senior Night, featuring special honors for Class of 2019 varsity players Nicole Johnson, Stefanie Hale, and Megan Skrobut. Basketball Post-Season Starts Monday, February 4 Following tonight’s match with Prep, the varsity squad begins their post-season journey on Monday (February 4), when Metro League playoffs begin. Gymnastics Record: 5–0 Highlights: HNA’s defending-State-champion gymnasts started 2019 on a strong note on January 11 on Bainbridge Island, scoring 169.25 against Bainbridge (165.75), (139.85), and Garfield (116.8). A week later at Roosevelt HS, the Cougars’ 174.25 defeated Roosevelt (154), Garfield (122), and Franklin (49). In a tighter contest at West Seattle on January 25, HNA scored 175.85 over Ballard (175.35), Bainbridge (168.35), and Chief Sealth (101.2). Standouts: In the first meet of the new year, Ally Neiders ’22 placed first on bars (9.2) and fourth on beam (8.7). Cait McNeill ’20 was second in all- around (34.3) and third on bars (8.5). Kaysa Lundberg ’19 was first on floor (9.3) and third in all-around (33.15). At West Seattle, Lauryn Nakamura ’20 placed second on beam (9.05) and Maya McDonald ’19 third on vault (9.2). Post-Season Ticket Prices: Basketball, Gymnastics Post-season Metro and District tournament fees for basketball and gymnastics are $7 for adults and students without activity cards, $5 for students with activity cards and for senior citizens. Ticket prices for the State basketball tournament have not yet been released by the WIAA. For the State gymnastics tournament, February 21–22 at Sammamish High School: $20 adults, $14 students and seniors. Crew Highlights: HNA crew rounded out the winter training season indoors at Northwest Ergomania on January 26 at Seattle’s Rainier Community Center. The team had over 60 Cougar rowers racing a collective 2,000 meters on indoor rowing machines against athletes from other rowing teams from across the region. Standouts: At Northwest Ergomania, HNA crew had four top-3 finishes. In the Junior 2k, Belle Battistoni ’20 first out of 71, and Olivia Bay ’20 second of 21 in the Junior Lightweight 2k. In the Junior Novice 2k, Lucy Martinez ’19 was first and Isabel Roubicek ’22 third out of 38. Where to see them: Cougar crew begins spring racing next month, with the first official regattas on March 16: the travel team will compete at the Shamrock Invitational in Redwood Shores, Calif., while the home team contends at the Green Lake Regatta. Winter Sports Awards Evenings Basketball and gymnastics will hold their end-of-season awards night at HNA on Tuesday, March 5, at 6 p.m. Basketball will meet in the HNA Café; gymnastics meets in the SAC. Spring Athletes: Physicals and Paperwork Due Athletes who want to turn out for softball, lacrosse, tennis, track & field, or Ultimate Frisbee must have their sports-physical forms on file in the Athletic Office by Wednesday, February 13. (For crew, the deadline was January 23.) Turnouts for spring crew begin Monday, February 4; for lacrosse, softball, tennis, track & field, and Ultimate Frisbee on Monday, February 25. The form for a physical exam, which must be signed by a physician, is good for 13 months. In addition to a current sports physical, students must also register for their spring sport on Family ID by February 13. IMPORTANT: students who participated in a fall or winter sport must still register for their spring sport on Family ID. Registration instructions can be found on the school website under Athletics—Eligibility. SPRING-SPORTS TRYOUT INFORMATION AND SCHEDULES Spring Crew begins Monday, February 4, at Lake Rowing Club. Final rosters will be announced by February 14. Click for registration materials and detailed information. Track & Field (a no-cut sport) will meet in the HNA Café on Monday, February 25, at 3 p.m. and do local workouts from 3 to 5 p.m. Athletes will travel to the track Tuesday through Friday. Appropriate clothing, shoes, and water required. Lacrosse: Tryouts Monday, February 25—Friday, March 1, from 3 to 5 p.m. HNA’s home field will rotate throughout the week: Mondays at Delridge Playfield, Tuesdays at Lower Woodland #2, Wednesdays at Washington Park, Thursdays at Georgetown Playfield, Fridays TBD. The practice rotation and games schedule will be posted on the HNA Athletics Calendar. Ultimate Frisbee: Tryouts Monday, February 25–Friday, March 1. Students will gather at HNA for a brief meeting on Monday, February 25, then proceed to Volunteer Park for tryouts from 3 to 4:30 p.m. The schedule for the rest of the week will be announced that day. Athletes should bring the following to tryouts: cleats, running shoes, water, white shirt, and dark shirt. Softball: Tryouts Monday, February 25–Friday, March 1. All athletes should report to the gym from 4 to 5:30 p.m. on Monday, February 25. The schedule for the rest of tryout week will be announced that day. Tennis: Returning players will meet Monday, February 25, at Volunteer Park courts; new athletes trying out for tennis will meet at Miller Playfield tennis courts, 3 to 5 p.m. Spring Sports Parents Meetings A general sports parent meeting covering the HNA Athletic Department Handbook was held at the beginning of the school year for all sports. Parents of lacrosse, softball, tennis, track & field, and Ultimate Frisbee athletes will be notified of sport-specific parent meetings once teams are determined. Cougar Club Merchandise HNA Cougar Club Merchandise is available for sale through the Athletic Office. A list of available items is on the HNA website. Athletic Bags Students who wish to purchase a sturdy, roomy athletic bag in school colors may order one through the Athletic Office. The cost is $70. Students may have bags personalized with their names.
