He/she also needs to be able to understand what the story is about. This is called reading comprehension. Help your child develop these skills when reading together at home. Here are some ideas you can try. To become a better reader, your child needs to: 1. Create mental images. Help him/her imagine pictures, smells, tastes, sounds, and feelings as he reads. 2. Use background knowledge. Help him/her make connections between what he/she is reading and Madison and Carlos enjoying a book together. what he/she already knows or has experienced. 3. Ask questions. Help him/her to clarify meaning, make predictions, and focus on what‟s important by asking questions before, during, and after reading a story. 4. Make inferences. Help him/her use what he might already know about a subject to make predictions, find answers to questions, and draw conclusions about the story. 5. Determine the most important ideas or themes. Help him/her identify key ideas and distinguish Texts From Transportation between important and unimportant information. 6. Synthesize information. MCCSC staff members travel city and county roads prior to making any announcement regarding delays or closings. Law enforcement, street and highway departments are consulted depending on the conditions. Please do not call school personnel or radio stations, as this ties up busy phone lines and delays the process. Decisions will be announced through the media (see listing below), on the MCCSC website (http://www.mccsc.net/) and on the main MCCSC phone line, 330-7700. *Please note that if there is a delay, school will begin at 10:35 a.m., Monday- Friday. In attempt to prevent any future issues, lost and found items will be put in the dryer each morning for 30 minutes. Each Monday, all unclaimed items will be disposed of. Please consider writing your student‟s name in all jackets, hats, gloves, etc. This simple step will reduce the likelihood of the items ending up in the lost and found or trash.
