Payne appeared in two games with the Mad Ants (at Erie on 11/21 and 11/22), averaging 12.0 points, 10.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.0 blocks in 31.1 minutes. In last night’s contest, he totaled 17 points, 13 rebounds (five on the offensive glass), two assists and two blocks in 31 minutes (4-9 FGs, 9-11 FTs). ### The Atlanta Hawks, a member of the National Basketball Association since 1968, strive to be champions on the court and in the community and to create lifelong memories along the way. On the court, the Hawks have reached the playoffs in seven consecutive seasons, which is the longest streak in the Eastern Conference. Off the court, the Hawks have awarded millions in charitable and in-kind contributions since 2004, including grants to area non-profits, scholarships for high school students and renovation of basketball courts in underserved neighborhoods.     Vipers’ Head Coach Resigns Larry Brown resigns from his position due to medical issues Florence, SC – February 12, 2014 – The Pee Dee Vipers’ Head Coach, Larry Brown, has resigned from his position as a consequence of medical concerns and precautions. Brown and the Vipers took into consideration the long-term health of Brown and productivity of the team when making this decision. Brown does not feel that he can adequately provide the Vipers with the standard of coaching he is accustom to contributing and focus on improving his health at the same time. The entire Vipers Organization backs Brown in his decision and will continue to support him during his journey to good health. Andre Bovain has been named Head Coach. Bovain served as the Vipers’ Assistant Coach under Brown. NBA legend and Columbia, SC native, Xavier McDaniel will be one of the Vipers’ assistant coaches. Bryan Hergenroether will also join the Vipers’ coaching staff. The Vipers’ new coaching staff will leave much of what Brown has developed in place; plays and structure will be similar. Brown and Bovain worked closely to ensure that the coaching transition will be smooth and not dramatically impact the team’s winning style of play. In a recent interview, Houston Rockets President Ray Patterson defended the Blazers’ decision to draft Bowie, stating, “Anybody who says they would have taken Jordan over Bowie is whistling in the dark. Jordan just wasn't that good.”1 “Jordan just wasn’t that good? ” Reading that quote more than twenty years later, it’s almost impossible to fathom that there existed a day in which “basketball people,” the executive who today are paid millions of dollars to judge the relative mental and athletic skills of teenagers, could not determine that the mythic Michael Jordan was, and would be, a better basketball player than the infamous Sam Bowie.
