Royals Notes - Cleveland Indians @ Kansas City Royals - Monday, April 29, 2013 This & That

STARTERS STILL A STRONGSUIT--Despite the outcome in last night’s second game, the Kansas City starting rotation has worked at least 6.0 inning in 17 of the 22 games played to this point...last year’s rotation didn’t have 17 starts of at least 6.0 frames until May 22 in the 42nd game...the Royals have had 8 starts of at least 7.0 innings, a number that was not reached in 2012 until June 25 in game #71...KC has also had four games this year with the starter working at least 8.0 inning, a number the starters didn’t attain last year until August 21 in the 122nd game...the starters compiled a stretch of 16.2 consecutive scoreless innings before the Tribe plated a pair of unearned tallies in the first inning of last night’s game. RAYS NEXT ON THIS EXTENDED STAND--The Tampa Bay Rays are next on the agenda for the Royals as this season-high matching 10-game homestand continues (the other is August 5-14)...the Royals and Rays series will feature three former Rays in uniform for Kansas City, while none of the players dealt to Tampa Bay have made an appearance as of yet with the big league club...James Shields, who started 217 games for the Rays and won 87 of those, will kickoff the series tomorrow night...the Royals were 4-2 against Tampa Bay last year, sweeping the 3 games contested here and going 1-2 in “The Trop”...Kansas City trails the all-time work by a 52-67 margin, but holds a 29-26 advantage here at home. ELIAS SEZ...--The Elias Sports Bureau popped up this little ditty today that yesterday’s 9-0 win in the first game yesterday marked the fifth time that Kansas City has scored at least nine runs in a shutout win over Cleveland since the start of the 2000 season, tied for the most such wins any team has over a particular opponent in that span...four other teams have five shutout wins with at least nine runs scored against an opponent since 2000: Boston vs. Baltimore, Arizona vs. San Diego, San Francisco vs. Colorado and Pittsburgh vs. St. Louis. (The Pirates fifth such win over the Cardinals also came on Sunday.) ESKY HOMERS FOR 500TH KNOCK--Alcides Escobar collected his 500th career hit in style on Sunday, hitting a solo homer to left off of Justin Masterson... fortunately he was able to save the momento as the ball rebounded out of the seats and into the hands of Michael Brantley, who tossed it into the Royals’ bullpen for safe keeping. HOLLAND ON A STRIKE-FEST--Greg Holland recorded his sixth save on Saturday night after a pair of unearned runs crossed the plate, while fanning two in his inning of work...since striking out with the bases loaded in a driving rainstorm here on April 9 to record a save, Holland has fanned 12 of the 16 men he’s retired spanning 5.1 innings, while earning saves in all five situations presented in that span...he enters tonight action leading the Majors in strikeouts per 9.0 innings among relievers with an 18.00 mark, fanning 16 in 8.0 innings of work...behind Holland is Detroit’s Al Albuquerque (16.20) and Boston’s at 15.88...a season ago, Holland didn’t record 16 K’s until his 14th appearance on May 26...he is currently tied for seventh in strikeouts among relief pitchers in the A.L. WHAT A DIFFERENCE A YEAR MAKES--The Kansas City pen totaled 7.1 innings of work yesterday, it’s busiest day of the young season, but still has worked fewer innings than any other pen in baseball at 56.0...KC’s next opponent, the Tampa Bay Rays have the second fewest innings worked by the pen at 57.0...a season ago, KC’s bullpen finished second in the Majors in total innings worked with 561.1, trailing only Colorado’s 657.0, which stemmed from the Rockies keeping the starters on an 80-pitch limit. SECOND ON THE HILL--The combination shutout and allowing of 6 earned runs in the nightcap actually dropped KC’s season ERA to 3.10, which remains second in the American League to the Rangers’ 3.02 mark...Kansas City starters are tied with Detroit for the third base ERA in the A.L. at 3.23, while the Royal bullpen ERA of 2.73 is third. STARTERS IMPRESSIVE OF LATE--The theme entering 2013 was the improved starting rotation and while the new crew has the fourth best overall ERA among all other starting staffs, since April 13 it’s been the best in Majors at 2.69 allowing 32 earned runs in 107.0 innings...the Minnesota Twins have the second best overall ERA in the same time frame at 2.88. GORDO ON THE A-LIST CELEBRITY PANEL--Kansas City Gold Glove outfielder, Alex Gordon, has joined CC Sabathia of the , Matt Kemp of the and Andrew McCutchen of the Pittsburgh Pirates as well as Maria Menounos of Extra TV and Sam Ryan of MLB Network, as the Guest Judging Panel for the 2013 Honorary Bat Girl program, which recognizes baseball fans who have been affected by breast cancer and demonstrate a commitment to eradicating the disease...the Guest Panel will aid in the selection process of one Honorary Bat Girl for each of the 30 MLB teams...winners will be recognized by their respective Club between Mother’s Day, May 12th, and May 31st...the program includes strong support from countless players throughout the League who are personally committed to the fight against breast cancer. ON THE TUBE--The 2013 campaign is the sixth season of the Royals on Fox Sports Kansas City and features 140 telecasts, all of which will be shown in High Definition...Ryan Lefebvre will anchor the booth for 90 telecasts and Steve Physioc will call the play-by-play for 50 games...Rex Hudler will work all 140 games as the analyst...the pre and post-game shows, Royals Live, are hosted by Joel Goldberg, who will be joined at every home game and several road affairs by Royals Hall of Famer Jeff Montgomery. NED’S THIRD FULL SEASON WITH KC--The 16th full-time manager in franchise history, , was named to his post on May 13, 2010 and has recorded a 211-262 ledger since taking the reins...included was a 72-90 mark a year ago...this is his second stint as a big league manager after nearly six full campaigns at the helm for the (2003-2008)...he compiled a 457-502 record with the Brew Crew including a 166-146 mark in his last two seasons...Yost, a catcher during his playing days, began his coaching career in the Atlanta organization, including 12 straight seasons on Bobby Cox’s big league staff (1991-2002).
