My name is Cameron Scholvin and I am the Chief Operating Officer for the Columbus Blue Jackets. I thank you for the opportunity to provide testimony today on the proposition of legalized sports betting in Ohio. First, I’d like to speak a bit about the Columbus Blue Jackets. The McConnell family had a vision of bringing professional sports to Columbus and were awarded the rights to a National Hockey League franchise in November of 1996. The following May, a referendum for a publicly funded arena failed, but instead of ending the city’s hopes of attracting an NHL team, Mr. McConnell met with leaders at Nationwide and a partnership was formed that resulted in a state- of-the-art arena opening in September 2000 and a transformation of downtown Columbus that continues today. This year’s unprecedented season of no fans and limited fans marks the team’s 20th Anniversary Season. The advent of the team, the arena and the Arena District replaced a condemned state penitentiary and sparked a rebirth of downtown Columbus. As the team goes the Arena District goes. If the District is the heart of the city then the Blue Jackets have most certainly been its heartbeat, bringing an energy, a pride and a passion previously unseen downtown. The Short North: Then and Now On the first Saturday of every month, people from all over central Ohio flock to the Short North for Gallery Hop. This short stretch of High Street, located just north of the central downtown center of Columbus, is packed with restaurants, specialty shops, and art galleries. Music, talk, and laughter fill the air as people wander from site to site, enjoying the vibrancy and life of the area. People slip into the High Street businesses, examine the art and other knick- knacks, and maybe make a purchase or two. On beautiful spring days, downtown employees eat at the restaurants and walk up and down the High Street strip. In the summer, a group of resident oddballs have a parade of insanity through the neighborhood. In the residential neighborhoods of Victorian Village and Italian Village, located on opposite sides of High Street, there are dozens of construction projects, some recently completed, some major renovations in process, and others on the drawing board. The residents are some of the most educated and most tolerant in all of Columbus. Driving around the neighborhood, one can see all sorts of symbols of diversity: rainbow flags, American flags, Ohio State flags, and flags of the University of Michigan.
