Sierra Adventure Camps was founded in 1965 as Sierra Ski & Pack Club, Inc. and offers both a Watersports Day Camp program and a 12-day Sierra Sleep-Away Camp. The Watersports Day Camp offers campers (ages 7-14) a wide range of watersports including instruction in sailing, canoeing, boating, snorkeling, surfing, wakeboarding, kneeboarding, and Ocean Safety. Campers also enjoy boogie boarding, tubing, swimming and active beach games. The Sierra Sleep-Away (ages 8 -17) is a true camping experience with watersports such as wakeboarding, waterskiing, kneeboarding, tubing, boating, swimming, as well as exploring Yosemite & Angel Falls, participating in evening Tribal Games, and bringing each night to a close with the magic of campfire. “This camp was a wonderful experience for our son. ACA Accreditation means our program cares enough to undergo a thorough review (over 300 standards) of its operation - from staff qualifications and training to emergency management. American Camp Association collaborates with experts from The American Academy of Pediatrics, The American Red Cross, and other youth service agencies to assure that current practices in our program reflect the most up-to-date, research-based standards in camp operation. Our programs are designed with multi-level instruction to give campers new opportunities and experiences, to challenge them, and to promote self-confidence. While doing so, we are committed to safety: Quality Coast Guard approved waterski vests are securely fastened on each camper while engaged in any boating activity. Campers learn proper boat handling, rules of the waterway and Ocean Safety (recognizing wave conditions, rip currents, etc.) so they know how to be safe when on their own. We utilize beaches which feature clean water and are rated “A” by Heal the Bay. Enrollment is limited to only 70 per day in the Watersports Day Camp and the Sleep-Away. The founder, Kent D. Newell, was employed by the UCLA Fernald School for fourteen years, where he was Supervisor of Physical Education for 10 years. He is the founder and former Director of Camp Cornell for Boys, the Motor Performance Skills Program, as well as Sierra Adventure Camps until his retirement in 2005. Kent still enjoys camp and currently helps with the Kent D. Newell boating program on our Lake Days. Founder

The Watersports Day Camp is diverse, exciting, and skill-oriented. It is geared for children and teens who enjoy the water and have outgrown typical day camp programs. In order to give campers a variety of outdoor aquatic experiences, the program locations rotate: Beach Days, Marina Days, Lake Days, Tapia Days, and the ever favorite, Hurricane Harbor Water Park! Campers may choose the weeks and the days desired. Campers may enroll in one week (all 5 days) or two -week (6-day) minimum.
Beach Days Beach Days... Feature: Beach Days are filled with boogie boarding, sand sculpture • Boogie Boarding competition and active beach games. Tapia/Malibu Creek Days... Tapia/Malibu Creek Days Park Days allows campers to enjoy activities in the wide open spaces of the Santa Monica Mountains. Feature: In the morning campers choose their activity. At noon we serve our cookout lunch complete with marshmallow roast. Location... Our camp is located in the majestic Sierra National Forest on the shore of Bass Lake. Approximately 48 miles north of Fresno, California, and near the southern entrance to Yosemite National Park, the 3 1/2 mile long lake is laden with beautiful coves, beaches, and a waterfall inlet. Travel... We depart from our West Los Angeles meeting point in the morning and travel by deluxe air conditioned charter bus to Bass Lake.

Tent Living... Campers experience the great outdoors with true camp living. Groups of 10 children reside in large group tents with their Senior Leader. Many campers sleep outside the tent under the stars with a sleeping pad and sleeping bag. Individual modern bathroom facilities are on site. The overall ratio of campers to leaders is 7 to 1.
Climate... The 3,500 ft. elevation of Bass Lake shares the beautiful Ponderosa Pines & Cedars of other High Sierra elevated lakes, yet has much warmer water (summer temperature can reach 80) allowing us greater enjoyment of our many water sports. Daytime temperatures range from the mid 70’s to 80’s; nighttime temperatures can range from the mid 40’s to 50’s.
Health Services... Although we live in an outdoor setting, specific attention is paid to diet, sanitation, and the health and welfare of each individual camper. A full service medical facility is located 8 miles away in the town of Oakhurst. Food Services... Campers eat in our “outdoor dining hall,” with tables situated in the wide open-air space under the pine trees. Fresh food is bought daily and deliciously prepared by our cooks. Salad and fruit is served with lunch and dinner.

In addition to our regular camping experience, we offer teens a Counselor-in-Training (CIT) Program. This program offers the opportunity for teenagers to gain leadership experience while enjoying the full camp program. CIT's are included in pre-camp training and CIT meetings. They are personally led by the Directors with conflict resolution case studies and leadership skills. This program is great for a teenager who is friendly, can maintain a positive attitude, and who likes working with younger children. CIT's are assigned a group of younger campers and will help the senior leader lead the group, assist with activities and organize games. The number of CIT's accepted into this program is limited to 8. CIT’s accepted into this program receive a discount on the camp fees. There are no additional charges for this training program.
Watersports Day Program To be eligible for participation, candidates need: • To be at least 13 years of age. • To attend camp daily for at least two weeks (choose any weeks). • To have some experience in 3 or more of the following: sailing, canoeing, kayaking, boogie boarding, snorkeling, motorboating, surfing, or babysitting. Those who do not meet this requirement may attend 1-week, as a pre-CIT to complete it, and become a CIT for any other weeks.
Sierra Sleep-Away Program CIT's enjoy all regular activities plus special activites for CIT's only. To be eligible for participation, candidates need to: • Be at least 14 years of age. • Have attended the Sleep-Away as a camper in a previous year, or have camp or camping experience.
