The gross margin per 100 fresh bunches processed was N50, 500 and net margin was N10, 890. Some of the positive and significant determinants of palm fruits processing were quantity of palm fruits processed, cost of processing and processing experience. High cost of palm fruits, poor feeder roads, fluctuation in prices and electricity supply were major constraints to palm fruits processing. The profits from the enterprise were used in market development, construction of village hall, renovation of schools, churches and equipment of rural clinic. The study concludes that palm fruits processing is profitable and benefitable in rural development in the study area. It recommends that processors should form cooperative associations to pool their resources together and establish palm plantations for palm fruits as well as buy in large scale to reduce costs of palm fruits and cost of processing marketing. Despite all efforts at its containment, the scourge is still menacing especially in the rural communities and among HIV infected patients. This retrospective study was carried out to determine the case detection rate of pulmonary tuberculosis in a rural community hospital in Nigeria from 2001-2006. A total of 1219 suspected patients were tested for pulmonary tuberculosis by sputum smear stained by Ziehl-Neelsen techniQue. Out of this number, 350 (28.7%) were positive for Acid-Fast Bacilli including 198 males and 152 females. Also 235 of the sputum-smear positive patients were tested for the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) antibodies by Immunocomb 11 HIV 1 & 2 Bispot and confirmed by Immunocomb 11 HIV 1 & 2 Combfirm and HIV-1 Western Blot kit.

It plays an intrinsic role in almost all segments of the people‟s cultural life. In the Ọjị Ezinihitte festivity the „kola tradition‟ is meaningfully and elaborately celebrated. This article examines the importance of Ọjị within the context of Ezinihitte socio-cultural heritage, and equally accounts for continuity and change within it. An eclectic framework in data collection was utilized for this research. This involved the use of key-informant interviews, direct observation as well as extant textual sources (both published and un-published), including archival documents, for the purposes of the study. In terms of analysis, the study utilized the qualitative analytical approach. This was employed towards ensuring that the three basic purposes of this study – exploration, description and explanation – are well articulated and attained. The paper provided background for a proper understanding of the „sacred origin‟ of the Ọjị festive celebration. Through a vivid account of the festival‟s processes and rituals, it achieved a reconstruction of the festivity‟s origins and evolutionary trajectories and argues the festival as reflecting the people‟s spirit of fraternity and conviviality.

Federal University of Technology Owerri, Imo State [email protected] ABSTRACT: Medicinal plants are those plants that are used (parts, extract etc) in treating and preventing specific ailments and diseases that affect human beings. Hence the important role of medicinal plants in health care delivery (services) cannot be over emphasized. This research is on the identification and traditional uses of some medicinal plants in Ezinihitte Mbaise Local Government Area, furthermore the traditional use of medicinal plants for preventive and curative purposes among people of Ezinihitte Mbaise Local Government Area are handed down to the people from generation to generation and have become paramount in almost every household. To this extent several species of medicinal plants such as Gongronema latifolia, Asmina triloba, Aspilia africana, Azadirachta indica, citrus aurantifolia, etc were identified to be naturally distributed in all the autonomous communities in Ezinihitte Mbaise Local Area. Most plant parts (extract) identified eg.( bark root, seeds, fruit, leaf) serve as major source of active ingredient and products of secondary metabolites e.g alkaloid, terpenoids etc used in curing diseases, production of drugs as well as in maintaining good health by both the traditional and orthodox medical practitioners.

IAHS Publ. 366, 2015 Analysis of 30 years rainfall variability in Imo State of southeastern Nigeria FIDELIS CHINAZOR OKORIE Department of Geography and Environmental Management, Imo State University, PMB 2000, Owerri, Imo State, Nigeria [email protected] Many variations in rainfall have occurred for different climatic regions and individual locations in Nigeria with associated disasters. Every rainy season in Nigeria, wind gusts arising from tropical storms claim lives and properties worth millions of naira across the country. Flash floods from torrential rains wash away thousands of hectares of farmland. Dam bursts are common following such floods. Rainfall is one of the atmospheric driving forces responsible for climate variation and its effects in Imo state of Nigeria as in other parts of the world. A study in 2009 indicated that about 16% of the erosion in Owerri Municipality of Imo State is caused by rainfall (Maduka, 2009). Other current research shows that 91% of malaria cases in Orlu, Imo State, are attributed to rainfall variability (Okorie et al. 2014), which means that rainfall promotes mosquito breeding. The aim of this research is to analyse variability in rainfall in Imo State of Nigeria over 30 years. Ground truth precipitation data for 1980−2009 acquired from Nigeria Meteorological Department were used. The results show many variations in rainfall within the period under study, which have caused some environ-hydrological problems including coastal erosion, flooding and flood-related disasters (such as pollution, increased disease vectors, communicable diseases and epidemics).

[email protected] ABSTRACT: We investigated the willingness to adopt planted fallows as replacement to the natural fallows among farmers in Owerri Agricultural Zone of Central Southeastern Nigeria, in 2006. Structured interview schedule was used to generate socioeconomic data from respondent farmers. Data were analyzed using percentages and multiple regressions for socioeconomic analysis. Soil samples were also collected from soils under natural fallows but of 5 different fallow lengths. These surface soil samples were analyzed using laboratory techniques for status of soil fertility indices. Resulting data were subjected to Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and means were separated using the least significant difference (LSD) at 5% level of probability. While analysis of socio-economic data showed that adoptability of fallows had good relationship with education, age and farm size; soil data indicated inability of natural fallow to cope with soil productivity demands at all fallow lengths studied when judged with existing standards. Establishment of planted fallows in demonstration farms of Agricultural Development Programmes (ADPs) of the agroecology, and studies on them may enhance certainty in the prediction of adoptability of these novel techniques of soil fertility regeneration.
