DESCRIPTION: This course brings together helitorch module members and plastic sphere

dispenser (PSD) operators to discuss policies and procedures; identify problems, concerns, and

tasks; and recommend changes. This workshop meets the requirement established in the

Interagency Aerial Ignition Guide for an annual recertification training session to maintain

currency.

Note: Class size will be limited to approximately 12 students. Students need to bring clothing

appropriate for outdoor weather for the “hands on” demonstration portion of the training.

TARGET GROUP: Carded interagency helitorch module members and PSD operators

PREREQUISITES: Qualified as a HTMG, HTMM, HTPT, or PLDO

SCHEDULE: PSD recertification will begin at 1000 hours and conclude by noon. Helitorch recertification will begin at 1300 and conclude by 1600 hours.

COST: No tuition. Students and instructors are responsible for travel and per diem. EASTERN WASHINGTON INTERAGENCY TRAINING ZONE ZONE TRAINING ANNOUNCEMENT D­110 DISPATCH RECORDER

Dispatch Recorder D­110 is a 16 hour course designed to train potential dispatch recorders on the structure of an expanded dispatch organization and effectively perform within that organization. It will provide the student with a working knowledge of the purpose and process of completing the resource order and other dispatch forms. It will also provide instructions on established dispatch procedures.

The course combines one day of classroom instruction followed by a second day in the field with students working through a series of problem solving events in small teams (Field Leadership Assessment Course). Objectives: • Students will demonstrate an understanding of fundamental leadership principles. • Students will assess their individual traits and motivation for entering into a leadership role.

Course Description ­ This refresher training is intended to meet the recurrent training requirement established in FSH 5109.17 for Helicopter Crewmember (HECM). Students will complete A­ 200, a review of the helicopter accident on the IPNF and A­219 external load operations. A­ 110 (Aviation Transportation of Hazardous Materials) will be presented.

Course Objectives ­Review employee safety while working around helicopter operations. (Re­Currency requirement every 3 years) ­Comply with DOT Regulations 49 CFR 171.8 for transportation of hazardous materials. (Re­Currency requirement every 3 years) ­Recertify students in the use of long line operations A­219. (Re­Currency requirement every 3 years)

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Firefighter Training and Introduction to Wildland Fire Behavior. The course is designed to give entry level firefighters the skills necessary to suppress wildland fires. The course includes L-180 and I-100. Also, S-190 provides instruction in the primary factors affecting the start and spread of wildfire and recognition of potentially hazardous situations.

OBJECTIVES: Students at the completion of this training will be able to identify environmental factors of fuels, weather and topography that affect the start and spread of wildland fire, describe the contributing factors that indicate potential for increased fire behavior that may compromise safety, and be able to engage and extinguish wildland fires safely. This is a classroom and field based course that will provide introduction to the function, maintenance, and safe use of chain saws on wildland fires. Field exercises support entry to mid level training for firefighters, providing hands­on experience in surroundings similar to fireline situations.

Objectives: ▪ List, define, and apply chain saw safety standards. ▪ Incorporate the use of PPE in wildland chainsaw operations. ▪ Identify basic chainsaw parts, maintenance, troubleshooting, and safety features. ▪ Demonstrate field maintenance tasks required for chainsaw operation. ▪ Demonstrate the tactical application of chainsaws in brushing, limbing, bucking, and falling for fireline construction and mop up operations.

Objective: This course provides the student with the skills and knowledge to size­up a wildland/urban interface (WUI) fire incident, evaluate the potential situation, order and deploy necessary resources, and apply safe and effective strategy and tactics to minimize the threat to life and property.

DATES OF CLASSES: February 14­15 AND 21­22, 2009

PREREQUISITES: Wildland Agencies: Qualified Firefighter Type 1 Structural Departments: Completed Intro to ICS (I­100), Human Factors (L­180), Firefighter Training (S­130), Intro to Wildland Fire Behavior (S­190), and Firefighter Type 1 (S­131); or equivalent training.

All students must be knowledgeable of their agency firefighting policy as it relates to WUI fires.

TARGET GROUP: Wildland Agencies: required for Initial Attack IC (ICT4) and Strike Team/Task Force Leader Structural Departments: training is appropriate for engine operators, chief officers and company officers responsible for structure protection in the WUI.

This is a classroom­based skills course designed to prepare the prospective supervisor to undertake safe and effective fire management operations. It is the second course in a series that collectively serves to develop fire behavior prediction knowledge and skills.

Objectives: ▪ Describe Crew Boss responsibilities prior to and during mobilization, on an incident and during demobilization. ▪ Identify the hazards & risks on various incidents and describe how to mitigate them. ▪ Describe tactics which are appropriate to various wildland fire situations and procedures to implement them through the chain of command. § Perform the tasks of engine boss in making the tactical decisions required to safely manage an engine on an incident. § Given a dozer, operator and a tactical assignment the dozer boss will: 1. Ensure that the dozer has been properly inspected and signed up. 2. Ensure the operator is qualified and signed up. 3. Determine the capabilities and limitations of the dozer and operator to perform an assignment. 4.Identify the actions required of the dozer boss to safely and effectively complete an assignment.

S-231: Perform the tasks of an engine boss in making the tactical decisions required to safely manage an engine on an incident.

Training Announcement S-290 Intermediate Wildland Fire Behavior Nominations due October 15, 2008

This is a classroom­based skills course designed to prepare the prospective supervisor to undertake safe and effective fire management operations. It is the second course in a series that collectively serves to develop fire behavior prediction knowledge and skills. The Lead instructor is Don Strand, Who has over thirty years experience as a Fire Behavior/Long Term fire analyst, Division supervisor, and Type 3 Incident Commander. The Fire Weather will be instructed by Robert Tobin, Fire Weather meteorologist.

Objectives: ▪ Identify and describe the environmental, topographical and fuel factors which influence the behavior of Wildland fire. ▪ Identify and describe the causes of extreme fire behavior, such as spotting, crowning, fire whirls, plume dominated and win­driven fires. ▪ Assess Fireline data and fire behavior estimations, and identify areas where fire suppression limitations exist.
