TO THE LAITY AND CLERGY OF THE DIOCESE OF

27th April, 2017.

Dear Friends,

I am writing to let you know that the Very Reverend , presently Dean of in the , is to be the next . Her appointment comes following a careful and thorough process of consultation, discernment and interview undertaken by the Bench of Bishops following the Electoral College’s failure to elect a Bishop for the Diocese in February. A copy of the Press / Media Statement released today is attached below.

From the statement you will immediately recognise that Dean June is among the most outstanding and highly-regarded senior clerics of the Church of England, who will bring to both the and the a rich background of pastoral and administrative experience, coupled with a sharp intellect and great wisdom. The Bishops have every reason to believe that these gifts admirably equip her to undertake the task of episcopal oversight in your Diocese, and to contribute to the work of both the Bench of Bishops and the wider life of the Church in Wales.

In welcoming the appointment of a new Bishop, the Bench of Bishops and Dean June are mindful of the fact that this appointment will be a cause for some concern among those who retain reservations about the role of women in ordained ministry and the episcopate in particular. As such, we are committed both to the provisions of the Code of Practice produced by the Bishops at the request of the Governing Body and to its proper operation. We will ensure that, in the family of the Church in Wales, both pastoral care and sacramental provision are available to all the faithful.

The arrival of a new Bishop in any Diocese always presents an opportunity for both the refreshment of individual discipleship and the renewal of personal commitment to the cause of the Gospel. In welcoming Dean June to be your next Bishop, the Bench of Bishops expresses confidence that this will be so for you.
