he Big Sky Conference has a rich history in football dating back 51 years. Since the Big Sky began playing Football Championship Subdivision football in 1978, the league has won six national titles - Boise State (1980), Idaho State (1981), Montana State (1984), Montana (1995 & 2001) and Eastern Washington (2010). Big Sky teams have made 13 total appearances. T In 144 total FCS playoff games, the Big Sky has a record of 77-67 with seven wins and seven losses coming against fellow league teams. Entering the 2014 season,the Big Sky has had at least two teams in the FCS playoffs in 28 of the past 30 years. The Big Sky has had three teams in the playoffs on six occasions - 1988, 1990, 1994, 2003, 2009 and 2012. In 2013, the Big Sky sent four teams to the playoffs for the first tme. Since 1993, 15 Big Sky teams have made it to at least the semifinals of the playoffs. Montana State’s Caleb Schreibeis made it fi ve Buchanans in 10 years in 2012. Teammate Brad Daly gave Montana State back-to-back Buchanan winners in 2013. In 2013, Eastern Washington’s Cooper Kupp became the fi rst Big Sky player to win the as the nation’s top freshman. The Sports Network began awarding the Jerry Rice Award in 2011. Kupp set national freshman records for catches, yards and touchdowns. At the end of each season The Sports Network also awards the Eddie Robinson Award to the nation’s top FCS head coach. The Robinson Award was established in 1987 and two Big Sky head coaches have won the award - Montana head coach Joe Glenn in 2000 and Nevada head coach Chris Ault in 1991. he Big Sky Conference celebrated its 50th anniversary during the 2013-14 athletic season. As part of the celebration, the league announced its “50 Greatest Male Athletes.’’ A panel of current and former conference admin- istrators, coaches, and media members selected this prestigious list. The league also announced its “50 Greatest Moments.’’ The 2013-14 campaign alsoT marked the 25th anniversary of women’s sports in the conference. The league announced the “25 Greatest Female Athletes” and “25 Greatest Women’s Moments.’’ Stories on each athlete and moment can be found on the league’s offi cial web site big- skyconf.com.
