Introduction This paper focuses on the contemporary Scottish poet Jackie Kay and the comic strip ‘The Broons’ by studying Jackie Kay’s representation of this family in contrast to its characterisation in the comic strip. 1 This study presents a brief introduction to Jackie Kay and ‘The Broons’ and pays attention to Kay’s referential portrayal of this Scottish family in five of her poems: ‘Maw Broon Visits a Therapist’ (2006a, p.46-47), ‘Paw Broon on the Starr Report’ (2006a, p.57), ‘The Broon’s Bairn’s Black’ (2006a, p.61), ‘There’s Trouble for Maw Broon’ (2005, p.13-14) and ‘Maw Broon goes for colonic irrigation’ (unpublished). 2 Each of the poems will be approached stylistically by using the advantages offered by corpus linguistics methodology; in particular, the program Wordsmith Tools 3.0.

ADOPT VOLUNTEER FOSTER DONATE Jackson County Supporting the programs of the Jackson County Animal Shelter SPRING 2019 Meet a real hero From rescued to rescuer Every dog and cat that comes through the Shelter and finds a loving home is a joy for us. It’s what drives our volunteers to show up seven days a week. On occasion, an incredible story illustrates just how special these animals are, and just how much they can change when given love and training. Blake has such a story to tell. In October 2016, Blake, a 2-year-old, handsome Chocolate Lab was picked up as a stray in Central Point by Jackson County Animal Services. He had no collar, no microchip and no one came to claim him. Two weeks after his arrival, Search Dog Foundation (SDF) Canine Recruiter, Kirsten Fulk, visited the shelter, seeking high-energy dogs to evaluate for the SDF. Rescuing dogs and training them for careers in search and rescue is the foundation’s mission. Dogs recruited from across the country are trained to become the nation’s first responders to disasters across the nation. Kirsten quickly spotted Blake, and took him to the SDF training center in Santa Paula, California to be evalu- ated for entry into their program. He was accepted! In April 2018, after 17 months of care and training, Blake was paired with firefighter and paramedic, Mike Brice, of the San Diego Fire-Rescue/California Task Force 8. Edinburgh's Oor Wullie Sculptures Raising money for charity takes on many forms of media from television, radio, newspapers ads, flyers, shows, concerts, door‐to‐door and other campaign techniques. While we were in Edinburgh, we got to see and photograph several Oor We Wullie sculptures that are being utilized to raise funds for youth. According to the Edinburgh News: In Edinburgh, Scotland the 2019 Oor Wullie Big Bucket Trail was in the city as well as other communities such as Glasgow, Aberdeen, Dundee and Inverness. Two hundred sculptures will be in the cities mentioned between June 17 and August 30, 2019. The purpose is to raise money for three children's hospital charities via five city auctions for the sculptures. The charities mentioned include the Edinburgh Children's Hospital Charity, the ARCHIE Foundation and Glasgow Children's Hospital Charity. The hospital charities work with the National Health Service to provide care and services for babies, children and young people. According to msn.com: Oor Wulie is a popular comic strip character in Scotland. Scotland's Princess Beatrice became part of the fundraising campaign on June 17, 2019. D.C. Thomson Media has commissioned 200 life‐sized sculptures of the comic book character to put in the five cities to help fundraising. A similar campaign in 2016 raised 900,000 pounds. Besides the 200 on the streets, another 350 "wee" sculptures decorated by local schools, community groups and youth organizations can be seen in libraries, art galleries and shopping centers. • Li'l Abner in Washington Today by Irv Sternberg a New York Mayor Read
Imagine: Li’l Abner in Washington Today By Irv Sternberg A New York mayor read them to children on the radio every Sunday morning. Some mimicked real people. They offered a daily respite from the dark days of the Depression, and were part of my life in the thirties and forties. My favorite comic strips as a child growing up in that period were ‘Li’l Abner,’ ‘Prince Valiant,’ ‘Dick Tracy,’ ‘Blondie,’ and ‘Rex Morgan, MD.’ Some can still be read in certain newspapers, a testimonial to their popularity over the decades. I’ve always favored cartoons that featured quirky characters in uncluttered drawings and told funny or exciting stories in a crisp style. I was amused by Li’l Abner and his friends in hillbilly country, by the well-told adventures and beautifully drawn panels of ‘Prince Valiant’ in the days of King Arthur, and by tough, square- jawed Dick Tracy who introduced the two-way radio wristwatch and the police procedural genre to the comic strips. Now, in the winter of my life, I still read the comics. My current favorites are ‘Pickles,’ ‘Zits,’ ‘Pluggers,’ ‘Luann,’ and ‘Beetle Bailey.’ I like ‘Pickles’ and ‘Pluggers’ because the writers seem to be eavesdropping on my life. In ‘Pickles,’ I relate to his characters, Earl and Opal. I recognize the oddball situations and sometimes testy conversation between these two old-timers. ‘Pluggers’ seems to be based on hilarious situations too close for comfort. ‘Zits’ is about a self-centered, self-indulgent teenager whose behavior is so outrageous I’m just grateful he’s not mine.
