Attachment D to Adm. Memo No. 004 INSTRUCTIONS FOR FORMATTING A DISKETTE Formatting is the preparation of diskettes for storage of information. There are several different versions of the format command that can be used. The version that you use depends upon the type of diskette and the type of disk drive in which the diskette is being formatted. In order for us to be able to read the Tuition Grant diskettes you send, the diskettes should be properly formatted. Below is a table that identifies the more commonly used diskette types and disk drive specifications. The correct version of the format command will appear in the row for your diskette type and drive type. The format command uses the parameter “d:” to indicate the disk drive designation. For example, your 5 ¼ drive may be the “A:” drive. Instead of typing “FORMAT D:”, replace the drive designation with “A:” and type “FORMAT A:”. To verify that the disks were formatted correctly, perform the CHKDSK command on the newly formatted diskette. The format for the CHKDSK command is “CHKDSK d:”. When the command returns the disk information, compare it to the information in the fourth column of the table that corresponds to your diskette type and disk drive.. If the “total disk space” numbers are the same, the diskette is formatted correctly. Series Question: Assuming they don't want FAT32, Long Filename support, or Sockets, why should my customer upgrade to the newest ROM-DOS? Answer: Since our first FAT32 and LFN release 4.00.1091, there have been several improvements to the core ROM- DOS kernel. This core code is used primarily for our DOS 6.22 compatible compilations, and then extended in the case of a FAT32 or Long Filename build. The 4.00.1091 release is also a new code base and there will be no further upgrades to the previous DOS 6.22 code. In order to obtain new features, fixes, and support a customer must upgrade to release 4.00.1091 or greater. Along with the performance enhancements for both size and speed, several corrections have been made to the ROM-DOS kernel. These include stack and memory issues, disk access issues, and compatibility with the former market leader in DOS. Most of the ROM-DOS utilities have also been improved for size and speed, along with bug fixes. The major changes happened with the XCOPY, HIMEM, MSCDEX, CHKDSK, FDISK and FORMAT utilities. In the realm of international support, the Euro was added to the keyboard and display driver code. ROM- DOS and PC-DOS 2000 are the only non-GUI operating systems to support the Euro. Finally, new ROM-DOS utilities have been added. -

4959_Ch07_CMP3 4/20/05 5:30 PM Page 223 CHAPTER 7 ■ ■ ■ Backing Up and Recovering Virtual Machines For virtual machines running in a production environment, backup and recovery is just as serious as for all the other servers on the network. When running servers inside VMs, you’ll be faced with several new challenges, as well as advantages, when planning and implementing a backup strategy. In this chapter, you’ll explore the process of planning for and administering backup and recovery operations on VMs and VM hosts. Along the way, you’ll see the different approaches you can take to secure VM data, which include the following: •Traditional agent-based backups •Non-agent-based backups •Flat-file backups Also, many organizations have embraced the idea of maintaining a warm standby VM server that can be brought online if a primary server fails. This approach, for many organiza- tions, may mean that data is unavailable for a few minutes following the loss of a server. If you can’t afford to cluster all your systems, or if some of your applications don’t support clustering, then you may find this approach to be a perfect fit. Since the focus of this chapter is purely on VM backup and recovery, we’ll walk you through the process of maintaining a standby VM server in Chapter 14. Optimizing your backup strategy often means much more than simply installing software and letting it do its magic. Oftentimes, custom scripting is required to get the backup results you desire. Because of the importance of getting your virtual infrastructure to work around your needs (instead of the other way around), we’ll also show you several scripting ideas to both enhance and automate the backup, recovery, and availability of your VMs. -

GGCS Introduction to Windows 10 Part 3: The Control Panel and Settings in Windows 10 Most programs and apps have settings specific to that program. For example, in a word processor such as Microsoft Word there are settings for margins, fonts, tabs, etc. If you have another word processor, it can have different settings for margins, fonts, etc. These specific settings only affect one program. The settings in the Control Panel and in Settings are more general and affect the whole computer and peripherals such as the mouse, keyboard, monitor and printers. For example, if you switch the right and left buttons on the mouse in the Control Panel or in Settings, they are switched for everything you click on. If you change the resolution of the monitor, it is changed for the desktop, menus, Word, Internet Explorer and Edge, etc. How to display the Control Panel 1. Right-click the Windows Start button or press the Windows key on the keyboard + X. 2. Click “Control Panel” on the popup menu as shown in the first screen capture. In Windows 10, many of the settings that once were in the Control Panel have moved to Settings. However, there are often links in Settings that take you back to the Control Panel and many other settings that still only exist in the Control Panel. Settings versus Control Panel is an evolving part of Windows design that started with Windows 8. It is not clear at this time whether the Control Panel will eventually go away or whether it will simply be used less frequently by most users. -

Software has many different utilities that can be used and applied for different reasons. We will look at the following: System Restore Reset this PC Defragmenter Laptops BitLocker (Encryption) Microsoft Safety Scanner (remove viruses, spyware, and other malicious software) Uninstall unwanted software Hardware maintenance The first thing to do with your computer is to keep it running cool. Dust can cause your PC components to hold heat. This can cause parts to fail over time. The first thing you need to do is assemble your gear.
