The definition of gaming console has Tevolved over the years, but its core remains the same: a platform from which to play great games. The Xbox 360 does that and much, much more: It rips and plays your favorite singer’s CD, plays the DVD you just rented, keeps you in touch with your auntie, and grabs hold of your PC for a full-on TV experience. It’s an exciting time for digital entertainment. The Xbox 360 is a hugely pow- erful system that introduces crisp, clear, high-definition gaming for the first time ever and offers an incredible, fully-featured online service in Xbox Live. This chapter is worth reading, even if you already have an Xbox 360. But if you can’t wait another second, you can skip to Chapter 2 and connect your Xbox 360 console now. You can read this chapter later. COPYRIGHTED MATERIAL Parents, Start Here If your children will play with the Xbox 360 (or any other system), you should know what the console can do. It’s both ߜ A gaming system with games from tranquil to potentially disturbing ߜ A powerful communication device 05_771805 ch01.qxp 12/21/05 9:23 AM Page 8 8 Part I: Xbox 360 Out of the Box Children can communicate with strangers on Xbox Live and in the game forums on the Internet. People of all ages and intents frequent the forums. But the Family Settings in Xbox 360 allow you to set a pass code before anyone can use the Xbox Live functions, which means you get to control access and can monitor online use (see Chapter 11 for further instructions on the Family Settings). There’s a lot to know about Xbox 360 if you’re a parent: ߜ Keep children safe while playing in Xbox Live (see Chapter 4). ߜ Use the tips in Chapter 16. ߜ Check the game ratings (see Chapter 11). Playing with an Xbox 360 The Xbox 360 is more than just a game console. It offers a ton of extra functionality. Games Xbox 360 signals the arrival of the next generation of video games. It’s the first console system to support high definition, meaning that video games have simply never looked as good as they do on Xbox 360. Better yet, with the combination of incredible graphics, surround-sound support for every game, and online options, you get the trifecta of gaming features that every gamer wants to try. Visual clarity, incredible sounds, and online functionality are only part of the story; this next generation of gaming means game developers can craft expe- riences that video gamers have never witnessed before. Realistic worlds, where locations look virtually like their real-life counterparts; beautiful fan- tasy settings that you can lose yourself in; and inventive situations that you’ve never played before usher in a true step forward in interactive enter- tainment, and it’s all delivered on Xbox 360. DVDs You have to take a break from gaming every once in a while, right? The Xbox 360 is high-end video hardware that fits into a home entertainment system. The Xbox 360 makes a great DVD player. 05_771805 ch01.qxp 12/21/05 9:23 AM Page 9 Chapter 1: Meet the Xbox 360 9 Chapter 5 describes how to use your Xbox 360 to play your DVD movies. Chapter 9 Platform-specific API calls An emergency has arisen. Anyone playing with the MonkeyTap game from the previous chapter will quickly come to the conclusion that it desperately needs a very basic enhancement, and it simply can- not be allowed to exist without it. MonkeyTap needs sound. It doesn’t need very sophisticated sound—just little beeps to accompany the flashes of the four BoxView elements. But the Xamarin.Forms API doesn’t support sound, so sound is not something we can add to MonkeyTap with just a couple of API calls. Supporting sound requires going somewhat be- yond Xamarin.Forms to make use of platform-specific sound-generation facilities. Figuring out how to make sounds in iOS, Android, and Windows Phone is hard enough. But how does a Xamarin.Forms program then make calls into the individual platforms? Before tackling the complexities of sound, let’s examine the different approaches to making plat- form-specific API calls with a much simpler example. The first three short programs shown in this chap- ter are all functionally identical: They all display two tiny items of information supplied by the underly- ing platform’s operating system that reveal the model of the device running the program and the op- erating system version. Preprocessing in the Shared Asset Project As you learned in Chapter 2, “Anatomy of an app,” you can use either a Shared Asset Project (SAP) or a Portable Class Library (PCL) for the code that is common to all three platforms. An SAP contains code files that are shared among the platform projects, while a PCL encloses the common code in a library that is accessible only through public types.

  • Xbox Security
Xbox Security The Xbox is a sixth generation video game console produced by Microsoft Corporation. It was Microsoft's first foray into the gaming console market, and competed directly with Sony's PlayStation 2 and the Nintendo GameCube. It was released on November 15, 2001 in North America, February 22, 2002 in Japan, and March 14, 2002 in Europe and Australia. It is the predecessor to Microsoft's Xbox 360 console. The remarkable success of the upstart Sony PlayStation worried Microsoft in late 1990s. The growing video game market seemed to threaten the PC market which Microsoft had dominated and relied upon for most of its revenues. Additionally, a venture into the gaming console market would diversify Microsoft's product line, which up to that time had been heavily concentrated on software. The Xbox was Microsoft's first product that ventured into the video game console market, after having collaborated with Sega in porting Windows CE to the Dreamcast console. Notable launch titles for the console included Halo: Combat Evolved, Amped: Freestyle Snowboarding, Dead or Alive 3, Project Gotham Racing, and Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee. Development The Xbox was initially developed within Microsoft by a small team that included game developer Seamus Blackley (an agent with Creative Artists Agency representing video game creators). Microsoft repeatedly delayed the console, which was revealed at the end of 1999 following interviews of Microsoft CEO Bill Gates. Gates stated that a gaming/multimedia device was essential for multimedia convergence in the new times of digital entertainment. On March 10, 2000 the "X-box Project" was officially confirmed by Microsoft with a press release.

European Journal of Business, Economics and Accountancy Vol. 8, No. 1, 2020 ISSN 2056-6018 VALUATION OF TARGET FIRMS IN MERGERS AND ACQUISITIONS: A CASE STUDY ON MERGER OF SKYPE AND MICROSOFT Nguyen Vuong Bang Tam Thu Dau Mot University VIETNAM [email protected] ABSTRACT Mergers and acquisitions have become the most popular used methods of growth for the company and it’s one of the best ways to make a shortcut to get the success. They create the larger potential market share and open it up to a more diversified market, increase competitive advantage against competitors. It also allows firms to operate more efficiently and benefit both competition and consumers. However, there are also many cases that the synergy between acquiring company and acquired company failed. The most common reason is to not create synergy between both of them. In recent months, the merger between Microsoft and Skype is a very hot topic of analysts and viewers…etc. This acquisition presents a big opportunity for both firms, Skype give Microsoft a boost in the enterprise collaboration. To exchange for this synergy, Microsoft paid $8.5 billion in cash for Skype, the firm is not yet profitable. Skype revenue totaling $860 million last year and operating profit of $264 million, the company lost $6.9 million overall, according to documents filed with the SEC. Is that a good deal for Microsoft? Many analysts have different point of view but most of them have negative perspective. Research was to provide the analysis of Skype’s intrinsic value with an optimistic view of point about Skype’s future, Microsoft overpaid for Skype.
