NBA Court Realty Dan Cervone (New York University), Luke Bornn (Simon Fraser University), and Kirk Goldsberry (University of Texas) The Court is a Real Estate Market Throughout a basketball possession, teams fight to control valuable court space. For example, - being near the basket or in the corner 3 areas leads to high-value shots - having the ball at the top of the arc keeps many pass options open - being open and undefended anywhere on the court eases ball movement and minimizes turnovers. Using only patterns of ball movement such as passes, we are able to infer which regions of the court teams value most, and quantify the effects of controlling such regions. This leads to new spatial characterizations of team/player strategy, and value quantifications of positioning and spacing. For instance, we can compare the value of the space the ballcarrier controls with the value of the space his teammates control to better understand how different lineups manage on- and off-ball resources. Administration of Barack Obama, 2016 Remarks Honoring the 2016 National Basketball Association Champion Cleveland Cavaliers November 10, 2016 The President. Hello, everybody! Welcome to the White House, and give it up for the World Champion Cleveland Cavaliers! That's right, I said "World Champion" and "Cleveland" in the same sentence. [Laughter] That's what we're talking about when we talk about hope and change. [Laughter] We've got a lot of big Cavs fans here in the house, including Ohio's Governor, John Kasich, and his daughters Emma and Reese. We've got some outstanding Members of Congress that are here. And obviously we want to recognize Cavs owner Dan Gilbert, who put so much of himself into trying to make sure this thing worked. One of the great general managers of the game, David Griffin. And the pride and joy of Mexico, Missouri—[laughter]— Coach Tyronn Lue. I also, before I go any further, want to give a special thanks to J.R. Smith's shirt for showing up. [Laughter] I wasn't sure if it was going to make an appearance today. I'm glad you came. You're a very nice shirt. [Laughter] Now, last season, the Cavs were the favorites in the East all along, but the road was anything but stable. And I'm not even talking about what happened on the court. There were rumors about who was getting along with who, and why somebody wasn't in a picture, and LeBron is tweeting—[laughter]—and this was all big news. But somehow Coach Lue comes in and everything starts getting a little smoother, and they hit their stride in the playoffs.

Page 1 of 2 Utah Jazz draft Ex-CU Buff Alec Burks Guard taken 12th to end up a lottery pick By Ryan Thorburn Camera Sports Writer Boulder Daily Camera Posted:06/23/2011 06:57:18 PM MDT Alec Burks doesn't need 140 characters to describe the journey. Wheels up. ... Milwaukee. ... Tired. ... Sacramento. ... Airport life. ... Charlotte. ... Dummy tired. ... Phoenix. ... Thankful for another day. These are some of the simple messages the former Colorado guard sent via Twitter to keep his followers up to date with the journey from Colorado to the NBA. After finishing the spring semester at CU in May, Burks worked out for seven different teams. The Utah Jazz, the last team Burks auditioned for, selected the 6-foot-6 shooting guard with the No. 12 pick. Hoops dream realized. "It was exciting," Burks said during a teleconference from the the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. not long after shaking NBA commissioner David Stern's hand and posing for photos in a new three-piece suit and Jazz cap. "I'm glad they picked me." A lot of draftniks predicted Jimmer Fredette and the Jazz would make beautiful music together, but the BYU star was taken by Milwaukee at No. 10 -- the frequently forecasted landing spot for Burks -- and then traded to Sacramento. "I don't really believe in the mock drafts," Burks said. "They don't really know what's going to happen. I'm just glad to be in the lottery." Burks, who doesn't turn 20 until next month, agonized over the decision whether to remain in college or turn professional throughout a dazzling sophomore season in Boulder.

  • Myck Kabongo Slowly Taking Over for Texas Page 1 of 2
ESPN.com - Myck Kabongo slowly taking over for Texas Page 1 of 2 [Print without ESPN.com: College Basketball Nation images] Wednesday, December 21, 2011 Myck Kabongo slowly taking over for Texas By Jason King Texas coach Rick Barnes knew he'd landed one of the fastest recruits in the country when he signed Canadian point guard Myck Kabongo in the fall of 2010. Occasionally, though, Kabongo seems almost too fast. Multiple times this season, the 6-foot-1 freshman has sprinted up the court with the basketball and realized that none of his teammates were there with him. Instead of pulling back and waiting for them to catch up, Kabongo often tried to make things happen all by himself, which usually resulted in an ill-advised shot or a turnover. "I needed to learn how to slow down and run my team," said Kabongo, chuckling during a phone interview with ESPN.com Tuesday night. "They need me to play great for us to be in games. I understand that now." Apparently so. Texas has won seven straight games -- all by double digits -- since a pair of early-season losses to Oregon State and North Carolina State. Kabongo is one of the main reasons. The Toronto native is averaging 12.8 points and 6.7 assists in his last six contests, which includes a season-high 18-point effort in Saturday's win over Temple. Tonight Kabongo will face the toughest test of his career thus far when the Longhorns face No. 6 North Carolina in Chapel Hill. Texas has defeated the Tar Heels the last two seasons, but with a rotation that includes five freshmen and just three experienced players, Kabongo knows he'll have to be at his best if Texas has any hopes of a victory.
