How the Christmas Spider Invented Tinsel There Once Was a Small Family Living in a Small House on the Edge of a Small Town
How the Christmas Spider Invented Tinsel There once was a small family living in a small house on the edge of a small town. Unfortunately, this year’s holiday was set to be a sombre affair for them. They worked very hard, but bills always seemed to stack up. However, as the shops closed on Christmas Eve, the butchers didn’t want to waste anything and sold Marie the last goose at a bargain price even she could afford. It was a scrawny bird, but more meat than the family had seen in several weeks. She trudged home, fighting the snow the whole way. We may have no decorations or presents, but at least we can eat. When she arrived at her tiny home, she was greeted at the door by excited squeals. “Mummy look what we found!” The twins Amanda and Adam grabbed her hand and pulled her into the living room. A small pine tree propped in a pail leaned against the wall. “Wherever did you find that?” Marie gasped. They jumped and clapped. “No one wanted it. The florist closed up early today and threw it in the alley. It’s a bit wonky but one side is still good.” Adam twisted the pail of sand to show where the branches at the back were all broken. A spider ran down one of the bent limbs and jumped on his arm. He giggled. “Look, we got a Christmas pet, too.” Amanda shuddered. “You can keep that present.” Adam put the spider back in the tree and twisted the pot around so the broken branches were hidden. -

Winter Break and Happy Instagram:@garfieldhsela Holidays! Twitter: @GarfieldHSELA -1- Break Time By: Cherly Valdez During the thanksgiving break, I took advantage of leisure time to spend with my youngest sibling, aged six. With Christmas approaching, we decided to watch Jim Carrey’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas. The 2000 film is an adaptation of Dr. Seuss’ children’s book. As Christmas neared, the Grinch recalled a time when he was made fun of for making a homemade gift for a girl in his class. Petrified by the memory, the Grinch attempted to ruin Christmas for others as they did to him. We watched as the film’s main protagonist developed a warmer and loving nature. His transformation involved his ability to find happiness despite having a heart “three sizes too small.” This version of the Grinch taught me lessons beyond Christmas and holidays, it taught me the importance of letting grudges go, it taught me that spending time with myself is necessary, it taught me to appreciate the loving people around me. But when the trailer for Illumination’s The Grinch was released, I was disappointed by its different approach to the original. -
2020 Lost Pines Christmas Lighted Christmas Parade & Wassail Fest
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE FOR MORE INFORMATION Wednesday, November 19, 2020 Rebecca Gleason Main Street Manager City of Bastrop (512) 332-8800 2020 Lost Pines Christmas Lighted Christmas Parade & Wassail Fest Canceled In the interest of public health and safety, the City of Bastrop determined the best course of action is to cancel the Lost Pines Christmas Parade and Wassail Fest for the 2020 holiday season. With COVID-19 cases increasing nationally and locally, the City of Bastrop is, unfortunately, canceling the 2020 annual Lost Pines Christmas Lighted Christmas Parade and Wassail Fest. The City worked with the Bastrop County Health Authority and their Emergency Management Team but unfortunately could not find a way to continue in the current environment. "My heart is broken. These two events do so much to support our small businesses downtown as well as build community. I am thankful that we could plan several new safe and healthy Lost Pines Christmas events," said Main Street Manager Rebecca Gleason. This year, the City is hosting the first 'Making Bastrop Bright,' a lighted holiday decorating contest. Registrants decorate their homes or businesses, with winners chosen by the public. Details about the rules, categories, and more are available at www.cityofbastrop.org/MakingBastropBright. Registration is open to anyone within the Bastrop city limits, Tahitian Village, and The Colony. Also, the City of Bastrop and Film Alley will be hosting their first 'Virtual Tree Lighting & Drive-In Movie' on November 28 in the Bastrop Convention Center parking lot. Join the City as we host our annual City Tree Lighting Ceremony on the big screen and Facebook live.
