In 1930 the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) launched a home and neighborhood-centered program for boys 9 to 11 years of age. Cub Scouts is for boys in 1st grade through 5th grade. Currently, Cub Scouting is the largest of the BSA's three membership divisions, with Boy Scouting and Venturing the other two. A key element of the program is an emphasis on caring, nurturing relationships between boys and their parents, adult leaders, and friends. The BSA makes Scouting available to our nation’s youth by chartering community organizations to organize and operate Cub Scout packs, Boy Scout troops, Varsity Scout teams, Venturing crews and Sea Scout ships for boys and young men and women. These chartered organizations manage the units and control the program of activities to support their goals and objectives. Did you know that St. Joseph’s is the charter organization of a Cub Scout Pack? Pack 1811 was established in 2005 by the late Patrick O’Sullivan and is now led by Cubmaster Rick Peluso. Today, Pack 1811 is in urgent need of the parish community’s help. Cub Scouting is a volunteer organization and everything that is done as a Pack is dependent on its members. There are two primary reasons behind the success of a Cub Scout pack – the charter organization and the parents/volunteers – without either, a Pack couldn’t exist and flourish. Pack 1811 needs the support of the community to help the Pack succeed! How can the parish community help Pack 1811? By parishioners volunteering to work with the leadership of St. Joseph’s and Pack 1811 as consultants, advisers, leaders, or committee members. Previous experience in scouting is not necessary; all you need is an interest in preparing our young boys to become Boy Scouts. Our parish is blessed with many members already connected with Scouting. We only ask that you please come forward and help identify ways enrich and grow the Pack. Following the 11:15 am Mass on Sunday, June 9th, St. Joseph’s is hosting a gathering in Lapointe Hall of adults interested and willing to help our Pack. If you are interested in helping Pack 1811, come meet our Pack and District Leadership and discuss with them ways you can help. Feel free to bring the kids. Please get involved with Pack 1811. Its survival depends on YOU! It is never too late for a boy in grades 1 through 5 to join Cub Scouts. Any boy who may be interested in joining Pack 1811, please don’t hesitate to stop by after the 11:15 Mass to discuss with the Pack and District Leadership the steps to become part of a great organization. If you are unable to attend the gathering but would like to help or have a boy interested in scouting, please email John Boyd, Appalachian Trail District Executive, at [email protected] Faith Formation Therese Ivanisin, Director, ext. 3012 Ashley Arominski, Youth Ministry, ext. 3016
