Some records (e.g. Kerry) continue on into the 1940s. The grand juries were the precursors to county councils, which were established in 1898. There were forty grand juries – one in each of the thirty-two counties plus the cities of Dubin, Cork, Limerick, Waterford and Kilkenny and the towns of Galway, Drogheda and Carrickfergus. A law was passed in 1773-4 (Geo III c. 32 s.22) to allow the grand juries to pay £5 per half-year to interpreters at the highest courts, the assizes. In 1837 another law
