1) When is the proper time to light the Chanukah lights? There are different customs as to the best time to light; some light at Shkiya (sunset, ranging from 4:26 PM to 4:32 PM over Chanukah) while others wait until Teitz HaKochavim (nightfall, between 5:12 PM and 5:18 PM). If that is not possible, one should light while there are still people walking in the street or as long as there are other members of the household that are still awake.

2) How long do the lights have to burn? There must be minimally enough oil or wax for the lights to burn for one half-hour, though some who light at Shkiya (sunset) also add enough oil to burn until 30 minutes after Teitz HaKo- chavim (nightfall).

3) What should I do on Saturday night? The prevalent custom is to recite havdala at home and then light the Chanukah candles (though we do the reverse in shul, just to keep things interesting).

4) What do I do on Friday night? On Erev Shabbat, the menorah should be light before with enough fuel to last until 30 minutes after Tzeit HaKochavim (nightfall), about 5:36 PM this year.

5) What if I am at a Chanukah party in the late afternoon and I won't get home until very late at night? Should I light before I leave, after I get home or at the Chanukah party? You should not light at the Chanukah party because one is not established there. If you will be leaving after Plag HaMincha (3:33 pm), you can light before you leave provided that there is enough fuel for it to burn until 30 minutes after Shkiya (sunset) and that leaving the flames will not be dangerous. If that is not possible, you should appoint someone to light on your behalf.

6) I would like to leave the house after lighting the Chanukah lights, but I don't want to leave the lights unattended. May I blow out the lights after lighting them? You may blow out the lights one half-hour after lighting.

7) I light with oil and it often does not burn completely. How do I dispose of the oil? If the oil burns for more than one half-hour, you can dispose of the rest. However, it is preferable to have in mind that the extra oil should not become muktzeh (dedicated as Chanukah oil). If the oil did not burn for one half-hour, you can either use it on one of the following nights or burn it after Chanukah. It should not be used for anything else.

8) What if I have a different question? Not a problem—feel free to give me a call or shoot me an email!

Wishing everyone a safe and freilichen Chanukah!
