The Goldeyes served as the home team. Darnell Sweeney hit a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to break a scoreless tie. The Goldeyes took a 2-0 lead later in the inning on a two-out, RBI single from Logan Hill. Victor Capellan pitched a scoreless top of the ninth to earn his fifth save of the year. Jose Jose worked a scoreless top of the eighth to pick up the win in relief. Frank Duncan started and pitched 7.0 shutout innings on six hits. Duncan walked none and struck out five. It marked the Goldeyes’ third team shutout of the season. ALL-TIME AGAINST THE DOGS: The Winnipeg Goldeyes are 12-12 all-time against the Chicago Dogs, including a 5-7 record at Impact Field. The Dogs are in their third season of existence, and are based out of the Village of Rosemont, Illinois. Rosemont is located 18 miles northwest of downtown Chicago. The Dogs play at state-of-the-art Impact Field, a $60 Million facility with a seating capacity of 6,300. The Dogs were 59-41 in 2019, which was the third-best record in the American Association. Chicago finished third in the North Division, and 4.0 games out of a playoff spot. The Dogs were 45- 54 during their expansion season in 2018, finishing 34-27 following an 11-27 start. Former Major League player and manager Butch Hobson is in his third year as Dogs’ manager. Hobson enjoyed an eight-year playing career in the Majors with the Boston Red Sox, California Angels, and New York Yankees. In 1977, Hobson hit 30 home runs and had 112 RBI for Boston. Hobson is in his 32 nd season managing in professional baseball, and skippered the Red Sox from 1992-94. Hobson has extensive experience managing in independent baseball, and is one of only five managers in the history of the industry with more than 1,000 wins. Hobson led the Nashua Pride (Atlantic League/Can-Am League) for eight seasons, including an Atlantic League championship in 2000 and a Can-Am League title in 2007. Hobson also guided the Atlantic League’s Lancaster Barnstormers for six years, winning a championship in 2014. In 2017, Hobson led the Low-A Midwest League’s Kane County Cougars (Arizona Diamondbacks) to a 72-65 record. SERIES MATCHUP: The Winnipeg Goldeyes are 14-8 and in first place in the American Association. The Goldeyes just swept a three-game series vs. Fargo-Moorhead at Newman Outdoor Field in which the Goldeyes served as the home team. The Goldeyes are third in the American Association in hitting (.289), first in pitching (4.09), and tied for first in fielding (.976). The Chicago Dogs are 9-10, tied for fourth place, and 3.5 games behind the Goldeyes. Chicago just swept a three-game series from the Milwaukee Milkmen at Impact Field. The Dogs are fifth in the league in batting (.254), third in pitching (4.50), and tied for first in defence (.976). This is the first of three head-to-head series this season between the Goldeyes and Dogs. Winnipeg was 5-7 against Chicago in 2019. PROJECTED UPCOMING PITCHING MATCHUPS TONIGHT’S STARTERS: The Goldeyes go with left- 7/29 at CHI: RHP Brandon Cumpton (0-0, 4.50) vs. LHP Thomas Dorminy (3-0, 2.92) hander Mitchell Lambson who is 2-1 with a 4.79 ERA in 7/30 at CHI: RHP Kevin Hilton (3-0, 1.77) vs. LHP Jacob Dahlberg (1-0, 4.82) four starts this season. Lambson took a no-decision at Fargo-Moorhead last Wednesday, allowing two earned runs on seven hits in 5.0 innings. Lambson walked none and struck out six. The RedHawks won the game 4-2. Lambson was 13-4 with a 3.11 ERA for the Goldeyes last season in 21 starts. Lambson ranked first in the American Association in wins, fifth in ERA, second in strikeouts (133), first in innings pitched (150.2), first in complete games (four) and first in wins above replacement (WAR) among pitchers (4.0). Lambson was also selected to the American Association All-Star Game at CHS Field in St. Paul. Lambson allowed three or fewer earned runs in 14 of his 21 starts. Lambson pitched 6.0 innings or more in 19 of his 21 starts, including 15 starts of 7.0 innings or more (most in the American Association). At the conclusion of the Goldeyes’ season, Lambson was traded to the Atlantic League’s Southern Maryland Blue Crabs where he was 3- 1 with a 1.35 ERA in an additional four starts. During the Goldeyes’ 2017 championship season, Lambson was 7-3 with one save and a 3.98 ERA in one start and 38 relief appearances. Lambson was then 1-0 with a 2.57 ERA in six postseason relief appearances, including 1.2 shutout innings in Game Five of the American Association Championship Series on September 20 th vs. Wichita. Lambson began 2018 pitching in the Mexican League before returning to the Goldeyes, and was 8-6 with a 3.81 ERA in 17 starts and one relief appearance. Lambson finished ninth in the American Association in ERA, and tied for fourth in WAR among pitchers (2.8). Lambson is in his 10 th season of professional baseball, and is 61-33 (.649) with 10 saves and a 3.33 ERA in 283 games, 58 of them as a starting pitcher. Lambson has averaged 8.5 strikeouts per nine innings as a professional versus just 2.2 walks. Lambson was drafted by the Houston Astros in the 19 th round in 2011 out of Arizona State University (Tempe, Arizona). Lambson helped the Sun Devils reach the College World Series in 2009 and 2011, and is tied for second in program history with 102 appearances. Lambson is 2-1 with a 1.88 ERA in three career starts against the Dogs. Lambson is 0-1 with a 2.25 ERA in one career start at Impact Field. The Dogs go with former Major League right-hander Eddie Butler who is 0-3 with a 6.41 ERA in three starts and one relief appearance this season. Butler took the loss at Milwaukee last Wednesday, allowing four earned runs on seven hits in 5.0 innings. Butler walked two and struck out five. Butler was 3-6 with a 4.76 ERA in 13 starts last season for the Korean Baseball Organization’s (KBO) NC Dinos. Butler pitched five consecutive seasons in the Majors Leagues from 2014-18 with the Colorado Rockies, Chicago Cubs, and Texas Rangers. Butler was 12-22 with two saves and a 5.80 ERA in 79 appearances (39 starts) over 263.2 Major League innings. On July 27, 2018, Butler was one of three players traded from the Chicago Cubs to the Rangers in exchange for Cole Hamels. Butler was drafted in the first round (46 th overall) by the Rockies in 2012 out of Radford University (Radford, Virginia). Butler is in his ninth season of professional baseball, and is 49-59 lifetime with two saves and a 4.25 ERA in 196 appearances, 154 of them as a starting pitcher. Tonight will be Butler’s first career appearance against the Goldeyes. Butler is 0-1 with a 7.71 ERA in one career relief appearance at Impact Field. GOLDEYES MANAGER: Rick Forney is now in his 15 th season as Goldeyes’ manager, and his 24 th overall within the organization. During his first 14 years at the helm, the Goldeyes have posted a .547 overall winning percentage (755-626), 11 winning seasons, nine playoff appearances, and an American Association-record three championships. Forney was voted American Association Manager of the Year in 2011, and managed the American Association during the American Association/Can-Am League All-Star Game in 2017. Forney’s .555 winning percentage in the American Association (2011-19) is the fourth-highest in league history (there have been 56 total American Association managers through the 2019 season). Forney pitched professionally for 10 years, including four seasons with the Goldeyes. During his playing career, Forney was 89-56 (.614) with a 3.63 ERA, and reached the Triple-A level in 1995. GOLDEYES WELCOME NEW HITTING COACH: The Winnipeg Goldeyes introduced Kash Beauchamp as their hitting coach last November. Beauchamp enjoyed a 14-year playing career in which he reached Triple-A in six different seasons. The former first overall draft pick (January phase, 1982) compiled a .285 career batting average in 1,083 professional games. In 1993, Beauchamp hit .367 for the Northern League’s Rochester Aces (the franchise that eventually became the Winnipeg Goldeyes), and became the first position player in independent baseball history to have his contract purchased by a Major League organization (Cincinnati Reds). Beauchamp has 10 years of managerial experience in independent baseball, and currently serves as the independent leagues scout for the Arizona Diamondbacks. GOLDEYES SIGN FORMER MAJOR LEAGUER CUMPTON: The Winnipeg Goldeyes signed former Major League right-handed pitcher Brandon Cumpton on Thursday.
