Cincinnati Reds Press Clippings November 21, 2012
Cincinnati Reds Press Clippings November 21, 2012 CINCINNATI ENQUIRER Pitching is pricey, transactions By John Fay | 11/20/2012 12:17 PM ET Want to know why the Reds would be wise to lock up Homer Bailey and Mat Latos long-term? The Kansas City Royals agreed to a three-year deal with Jeremy Guthrie that pays him $5 million on 2013, $11 million in 2014 and $9 million in 2015. He went 8-12 with a 4.76 ERA and 1.41 WHIP. Bailey went 13-10 with a 3.68 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP. Latos went 14-4 with a 2.48 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP. It’s a bit apples and oranges: Guthrie is a free agent; Bailey is arbitration-eligible for the second time, Latos for the first. But the point is starting pitching — even mediocre starting pitching — is expensive. SIX ADDED: The Reds added right-handers Carlos Contreras, Daniel Corcino, Curtis Partch and Josh Ravin, left-hander Ismael Guillon and outfielder Yorman Rodriguez to the roster in order to protect them from the Rule 5 draft. Report: Former Red Frank Pastore badly hurt in motorcycle wreck By dclark | 11/20/2012 7:55 PM ET The Inland Valley Daily Bulletin is reporting that former Cincinnati Reds pitcher Frank Pastore, a Christian radio personality in California, was badly injured Monday night after being thrown from his motorcycle onto the highway near Duarte, Calif. From dailybulletin.com’s Juliette Funes: A 55-year-old motorcyclist from Upland was taken to a trauma center when his motorcycle was hit by a car on the 210 Freeway Monday night. -
Anderson Goes 4, Tribe Hitless for 7 1/3 in Loss by Chris Gabel / Special to MLB.Com | March 11Th, 2016 SCOTTSDALE, Ariz
Anderson goes 4, Tribe hitless for 7 1/3 in loss By Chris Gabel / Special to MLB.com | March 11th, 2016 SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Five Rockies pitchers held the Indians without a baserunner for 7 1/3 innings Friday in a 6-1 Colorado victory at Salt River Fields. Chad Bettis, Christian Bergman, Jason Motte, Miguel Castro and Scott Oberg combined to set down the first 22 Indians -- in a lineup that featured at least six Opening Day starters -- before Mike Napoli drew a walk on a full-count pitch. Adam Moore then broke up the no-hitter with a double to deep center field. Bettis set the tone in his first start of Spring Training. In contention to start on Opening Day, the right-hander induced five groundouts and struck out three. Bergman struck out three in his two innings and Motte and Castro were perfect in their one inning apiece. The Indians broke up the shutout on Zack Walters' infield single to score Napoli. But the Rockies already up six runs by that point. "Guys threw the ball really well," manager Walt Weiss said. "We were good off the mound today. Really good. That's a good sign." He added: [Bettis] was in complete control." The Rockies got on the board in the third inning against Indians starter Cody Anderson.Daniel Descalso and Rafael Ynoa led off with back- to-back singles, followed by an RBI groundout from Charlie Blackmon. Colorado added a run in the fourth, when newly signedRyan Raburn singled and Brandon Barnes doubled to deep center field. -

(Burchfield) Daily Transactions 1 Most likely Detroit Tiger to be traded? Probably J.D. Martinez October 20, 2016 By Anthony Fenech/ Detroit Free Press The Detroit Tigers aren’t in a position to spend more money. General manager Al Avila said as much on Tuesday afternoon, saying with certainty the team would not be a big player in the free agent market. Avila wants the team to get younger. He wants more financial flexibility. And this off-season, he will approach the trade market with a number of high-priced, uber-productive chips, none more likely to get moved – if a move is made – than rightfielder J.D. Martinez. Martinez is scheduled to hit free agency after the 2017 season. He is due $11.75 million. “I don’t foresee any talks of a long-term contract at this point,” Avila said. “In saying that, we’re going to keep an open mind in what possibilities come across this winter, this coming summer. I’m not going to rule out that we wouldn’t consider a long-term deal, but sitting here today, we’re not thinking that way right now. -

MEDIA CLIPS – February 3, 2017 Young arms among Rockies' camp invites Veteran batters Denorfia, Reynolds also on non-roster list By Thomas Harding / MLB.com | @harding_at_mlb | February 2nd, 2017 DENVER -- Two fast-rising pitching prospects, right-hander Ryan Castellani and lefty Sam Howard, will make their first appearances in Major League camp this spring for the Rockies, who announced their non-roster invitees on Thursday. The group includes veterans Chris Denorfia, a right-handed-hitting outfielder, andMark Reynolds, who was the Rockies' primary first baseman last year. In all, the Rockies invited 22 players, including nine pitchers, to bring the total number to 62. Pitchers and catchers will have their first workout on Feb. 14, and the initial full-squad workout is Feb. 20. Castellani, who turns 21 on April 1, is a 2014 second-round pick out of Brophy College Preparatory in Phoenix. He went 7- 8 with a 3.81 ERA and 142 strikeouts in 167 2/3 innings last season at Class A Advanced Modesto against older competition in the California League. Howard, who turns 24 on March 5, was drafted a round after Castellani out of Georgia Southern. Howard went 9-9 with a 3.35 ERA, and fanned 140 in 156 innings. In the latest ranking of top 30 Rockies prospects by MLBPipeline.com, Castellani was No. 12 and Howard was 20th. While non-roster invitations give the Rockies a chance to look at highly touted prospects before the Minor League season, this group also includes players who could help the big squad beginning on Opening Day -- especially pitchers. -
