EXPRESSING DEEPEST SYMPATHY AND CONDOLENCES TO THE FAMILY OF THE LATE JOHN G DUARTE

WHEREAS the County of was deeply saddened when

one of its renowned citizens Mr John G Duarte passed away

on July 13 1979 at the age of 83 and

WHEREAS John G Duarte was born on July 10 1896 in

Spreckelsville Maui and

WHEREAS John G Duarte has served the County of Maui

with excellence throughout his many years and

WHEREAS John G Duarte also known by his political

name as Keiki 0 Ke Pani Wai was a member of both the

territorial and state legislatures he served in the

territorial legislature as a senator from 1949 to 1959 he

served as a representative in thesta to House of Representa

tives from 1963 to 1964 and in 1968 and as a senator in the

state Senate from 1965 to 1966 and

1WHEREAS in addition to his political career John G

Duarte was a boxing promoter from 1928 to 1935 and

WHEREAS John G Duarte was a printer foreman of the

Wailuku Times for thirteen years was the ownermanager of

the Valley Isle Chronicle for twelve years and the superin

tendent of the printing plant at Maui Publishing Company for

twentytwo years and

WHEREAS John G Duarte was truly a selfmade man

having attended Saint Anthony School for a few years but

never completing his education being forced to work at a

very young age and

WHEREAS John G Duarte was an active member of the

Saint Anthony Church and has made available to the church

the property located in Iao Valley where the Iao Fatima

roadside shrine is erected and

WHEREAS John G Duarte has also made available land on

which a portion of the Kepaniwai Heritage Park is located a

contribution he has made to enable residents of Maui and

visitors to the island the opportunity to enjoy the valley

he dearly loved and

WHEREAS John G Duarte had much concern and interest

in the welfare of the people of Kalaupapa Kalawac County

on he visited the settlement frequently and

introduced legislation to benefit the people an interest

he maintained throughout the years as one of our political

leaders and continuing after he left political office and

WHEREAS John G Duarte was also very interested and

concerned on matters relative to the Hawaiian Domes on

Molokai he actively introduced and pursued legislation to

help those people affected by the Hawaiian Homes and

WHEREAS John G Duarte in his later years devoted

his time and effort to the Senior Citizens organization and

had as his primary interest the numerous projects of the

organization and

WHEREAS John G Duarte was a past president of the

American Association of Retired Persons in 1975 and was

honored by the association in September 1976 with a procla

mation of the John Duarte Day in appreciation of his

efforts on their behalf and

WHEREAS the memory of John G Duarte will be dearly

remembered by all who knew him and the relationship he had

with his family and many friends will always be cherished

and

WHEREAS John G Duarte is survived by his daughter

Mrs Adelaide Rowland four brothers Joseph Jr Manuel

Louis and Frank and a sister Mrs Arsenia Richards now

therefore

BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the County of Maui

that it does hereby express its deepest sympathy and con

dolences to the family of the late John G Duarte and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED by the Council of the County of

Maui that certified copies of this resolution be forwarded

to Mrs Adelaide Rowland Mr Joseph Duarte Jr Mr Manuel

Duarte Mr Louis Duarte Mr Frank Duarte and Mrs Arsenia

Richards
