As American life expectancies have increased over the past decades, seniors have ever more opportunities for extended involvement in the lives of their children and grandchildren. For this talk, Lesley Stahl, one of America’s most recognized and experienced broadcast journalists, and the author of the bestselling book Becoming Grandma: The Joy and Science of the New Grandparenting, will offer a personal memoir about her own experiences upon becoming a grandmother. Enjoying many of the incredible highs of her new role, she soon became curious about this life-altering event, and set out to understand th4e challenges, rewards, and emotions that came with her new identity. Ms. Stahl will be in conversation with Heidi Stevens, the “Balancing Act” columnist for the Chicago Tribune. Using her skills as an investigative reporter, Ms. Stahl set out to document the biochemistry, history, psychology, and economics of becoming a grandparent. She interweaves this research with personal anecdotes and wisdom from her friend group (Whoopi Goldberg, Diane Sawyer, Cokie Roberts, and others) and from a wide array of other remarkable women. She explores the myriad relationships between grandparents and their grandchildren, and navigating the boundaries between a grandparent, the parent and the grandchild can be tricky. More grandparents are living with a grandchild in the U.S. than ever before, nearly 7 million in 2013, up from 5.8 million in 2000, and 37% of those serve as their grandchild’s primary caregiver. Significantly, baby boomers are a new type of grandparent – they younger, more energetic, and they’re spending more money on their grandchildren than any other generation in history, spending seven times more than grandparents just 10 years ago. Ms. Stahl urges today’s grandparents to help as much as they can, because today’s parents have never had more stress – for some, incomes have stagnated, working hours are long, and many have extensive travel requirements. Grandparents are needed more than ever – and grandparenting, as Ms. Stahl learned, also reaps health benefits for the grandparent. Ms. Stahl has been a 60 Minutes correspondent since 1991; before joining 60 Minutes, Ms. Stahl served as CBS News White House correspondent during the Carter, Reagan, and part of the George H.W. Bush presidencies. She also hosted Face the Nation from 1983 to 1991 and co-anchored America Tonight from 1989 to 1990.     SUNDAY REVIEW Sylvia Chase and the Boys’ Club of TV News When we started at the networks in the early ’70s, most of us tried to hide our gender. Sylvia spoke out. By Lesley Stahl Ms. Stahl is a correspondent for “60 Minutes.” Jan. 12, 2019 Back in the early 1970s, the TV network news organizations wanted to show the world that they were “equal opportunity employers.” And so, CBS, ABC and NBC scoured the country for women and minorities. In 1971, Sylvia Chase was a reporter and radio producer in Los Angeles, and I was a local TV reporter in Boston. CBS hired her for the New York bureau; I was sent to Washington. Sylvia, who died last week at age 80, and I were CBS’s affirmative action babies, along with Connie Chung and Michele Clark. To ensure we had no illusions about our lower status, we were given the title of “reporter.” We would have to earn the position of “correspondent” that our male colleagues enjoyed. We were more like apprentices, often sent out on stories with the seniors, like Roger Mudd and Daniel Schorr. While we did reports for radio, the “grown-ups” — all men — did TV, but we were allowed to watch how they developed sources, paced their days and wrote and edited their stories. Up until then, most women in broadcast journalism were researchers. At first, the four of us in our little group were grateful just to be in the door as reporters. Things began to stir when the women at Newsweek sued over gender discrimination.
