CD-ROM of this document plus images obtained to date - 1 - - 2 - 1.0 INTRODUCTION The Fish River Water Supply Scheme [FRWS] is a medium size but important water supply with the headwaters in the Central Highlands of NSW, west of the Great Dividing Range and to the south of Oberon. It supplies water in an area from Oberon, north to Portland, Mount Piper Power Station and beyond, and east, across the Great Dividing Range, to Wallerawang town, Wallerawang Power Station, Lithgow and the Upper Blue Mountains. It is the source of water for many small to medium communities, including Rydal, Lidsdale, Cullen Bullen, Glen Davis and Marrangaroo, as well as many rural properties through which its pipelines pass. It was established by Act of Parliament in 1945 as a Trading Undertaking of the NSW State Government. The FRWS had its origins as a result of the chronic water supply problems of the towns of Lithgow, Wallerawang, Portland and Oberon from as early as 1937, which were exacerbated by the 1940-43 drought. -

Among the endemic freshwater crayfsh, there are three large stream-dwelling species: the Giant Freshwater Crayfsh, Astacopsis gouldi – the world’s largest freshwater invertebrate, the medium-sized A. tricornis and smaller A. franklinii. Morphological variations in these forms, and in the closely allied Egernia strialata (Peters), are tabulated. Egernia saxatilis saxatilis appears to be confined to the Warrumbungle Mountains, while Egernia saxatilis intermedia is distributed throughout various parts of the eastern highlands. -

The wintertime (May–October) precipitation across south-eastern Australia, and the Snowy Mountains, was studied for 22 years (1995–2016) to explore the sensitivity of the relationships between six established climate indices and the precipitation to the orography, both regionally and locally in high-elevation areas. The high-elevation (above 1100 m) precipitation records were provided by an independent network of rain gauges maintained by Snowy Hydro Ltd. These observations were compared with the Australian Water Availability Project (AWAP) precipitation analysis, a commonly used gridded nationwide product. As the AWAP analysis does not incorporate any high-elevation sites, it is unable to capture local orographic precipitation processes. The analysis demonstrates that the alpine precipitation over the Snowy Mountains responds differently to the indices than the AWAP precipitation. In particular, the alpine precipitation is found to be most sensitive to the position of the subtropical ridge and less sensitive to a number of other climate indices tested. -

We began touring in I1965 with a Kombi van, and had always been peeved by signs that read four-wheel-drive only, hence the eventual move to 4X4. In 2014, we bought a 4X4 motorhome, an Explorer based on a Mitsubishi Triton. We had come across the Top End from WA via Jim Jim and Twin Falls and up to Cooktown through the Daintree and the Bloomfield Track. We decided to do a waterfall crawl down the east coast so we got ourselves into the Great Divide at the earliest opportunity. We travelled largely on unsealed roads and forestry tracks including some fire breaks, coming out of the bush only to replenish our fuel; food for us and diesel for the vehicle. We spent 11 days in the Atherton Tablelands, where there are dozens of beautiful waterfalls. These range from the ‘almost perfect’ Milla Milla Falls to the tiny cascades on local creeks. We were lucky that we had two days of heavy rain which made the falls all the more interesting. It also made the tracks interesting and the edges soft. We ventured onto a narrow track to Tully Gorge where about half way down we met a large motorised crane heading out. -

While recent evolutionary studies have focused on a few of these species, here we provide a comprehensive phylogenetic estimate of relationships among the species within the genus. We sequenced three mitochondrial gene regions (COI, 16S, and 12S) and one nuclear region (28S) from 40 species of the genus Euastacus, as well as one undescribed species. Using these data, we estimated the phylogenetic relationships within the genus using maximum-likelihood, parsimony, and Bayesian Markov Chain Monte Carlo analyses. Using Bayes factors to test diVerent model hypotheses, we found that the best phylogeny supports monophyletic groupings of all but two recognized species and suggests a widespread ancestor that diverged by vicariance. -

Routine astacological surveys in northeastern New South Wales have revealed four new species of crayfish. Three species are allied to the “setosus complex”, a group of small and poorly spinose Euastacus previously recorded only from Queensland: E. girurmulayn n.sp. from the Nightcap Range, E. guruhgi n.sp. from the Tweed volcanic plug and E. jagabar n.sp. from the Border Ranges. These three species are differentiated chiefly on features of the sternal keel, spination and antennal squame. Euastacus dalagarbe n.sp., recorded from the Border Ranges, has affinities with a growing group of crayfish displaying morphological traits intermediary between the setosus complex and more characteristically spinose Euastacus. It differs markedly in spination of the chelae, and in the nature of the lateral processes of the pereiopods. All of these taxa occur in association with the much larger and more spinose E. sulcatus.
