  • A Short History of Pop ‘Pop’ Is Short for Popular Music
Read the text. A short history of pop ‘Pop’ is short for popular music. There are different styles of pop music, but they all appeal to the general public. But when did ‘modern’ pop music begin? There were two significant moments. First of all Leo Fender invented the electric guitar in 1950. Then, in 1954, Sony introduced the transistor radio and after that, music was accessible to people in their homes and cars. In 1954 Elvis Presley released That’s All Right. He fused country music with black rhythm and blues to create rock and roll. At that time this was an innovation, and Elvis, who was young, attractive and exciting, became the first teen idol and made pop music a youth culture. The 1960s was the decade of The Beatles, who dominated pop music from 1961 to 1970 with a new folk-rock sound. The Beatles were the first band to play in a stadium: Shea Stadium in New York in 1965. In June 1969 they had their seventeenth number one hit – two more than Elvis. The 60s also saw the first outdoor music festivals and popular music began to have a social and political message, for example, Bob Dylan. This was also the beginning of Motown and soul music with artists like Ray Charles, The Supremes and Marvin Gaye. Think English Elementary • Unit 9 p.107 © Oxford University Press PHOTOCOPIABLE Next came the 1970s and several new genres of music appeared, like reggae (Bob Marley), glam rock (David Bowie), punk (the Sex Pistols) and heavy metal (Iron Maiden).

Young Joshua Ottem who regularly takes part in Open Mic Night took the stage for the eve- ning. He has an easy sound and his original vocals were mostly upbeat and had a positive message. He is mastering the guitar and I envy the relaxed way he handled it. He played three or four songs on his own before inviting two friends up on stage to back Shaking off him up with their guitars. • With a Little Help from My Friends Arctic Monkeys - When the Sun Goes Down
Q ganas dr I have categorized songs under various headings such as grammar, discussion topics and vocabulary. The grammar group has been divided according to suggested use e.g articles; present simple etc. The vocabulary group has been divided according to focus e.g. colours; weather etc. This list is by no means comprehensive. It has been compiled mostly from my own experience and from ideas from various websites including www.musicalenglishlessons.org. Sometimes it is difficult to decide if a category belongs under ‘Grammar’ or under ‘Vocabulary’ so please check both if you are looking for something specific. Any song can be used for grammar and vocabulary tasks so I have concentrated on what I thought to be the main focus. • Appendix 2-2 1 ISSUE ID COMMENT NO
KLAMATH RIVER BASIN FISHERIES TASK FORCE MIDTERM EVALUATION INTERVIEW RESPONSES1 ISSUE ID COMMENT NO. I. WOULD THE SITUATION BE WORSE 3 Yes, would be worse without the Act and TF WITHOUT THE ACT AND TASK FORCE? Only have $1 million per year to address a huge basin with all kinds of problems The fact that came up with a plan at all, generated with citizen input, with the TF guiding the pen of the author, is a huge success But a plan is only as good as it its implementation 7 Probably would be worse without the Act and TF. At least TF does get interests to the table. If not talking would be suing. Does serve as a forum, attaches faces to names, become better educated on opposing issues. Members don’t agree on a range of issues, but the forum has merit. 13 Act has helped some; would be worse off without it. Provides a starting point, brings information to the table. Failure is weak stock management under current system. Listing was the only alternative. 14 No, the situation would not be worse without the TF. If TF weren’t there we wouldn’t miss it. There is a better way to address fisheries problems than putting the money into the political arena. Should spend the money on the fish. Is not proud of the way the TF is operating. Are not addressing the real problems from Iron Gate to the Pacific. Fish problems are also affected by the “black box” of processes in the Pacific, harvests in the ocean, Native American harvest and Trinity diversion, which the TF cannot or will not address.
