Welcome to August 25, 2019

The is a Christian festival celebrated every year on August 15th in most parts of the world. On this day, the Virgin Mary, "having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory."

St. Francis of recently held it's very first “Assumption in the Park” celebration. It was an evening of communal gathering by both parishioners and surrounding neighbors to pray and celebrate the beautiful Feast of Mary’s Assumption into heaven.

We celebrated the Feast of the Assumption with the sharing of music, fellowship, and ice cream at the end of the evening.

Youth Faith Formation Volunteers Needed

Can you include the following in the bulletin the next two weekends (I've also attached a couple photos you can include if room allows - whether just one or both):

Our SFA Faith Formation team is need of more joyful, faith -filled, and enthusiastic volunteers to help lead our young people closer to Christ. You don't need to be an expert on the Catholic faith, but must possess and witness a love of the Lord and the Church and enjoy working with young people. We are most greatly in need of individuals to work with our middle school youth, followed by our high school youth. If this is something the Holy Spirit is inspiring you to consider, we invite you to contact:

Elizabeth Gruenke, Coordinator of Youth Ministry, GRIEF SUPPORT DROP-IN at [email protected].

The presence of youth in our church begins with YOU!

The scrip office has just learned that our local Menchie's will be closing at the end of business on September 2nd, 2019. If you have a Menchie's gift card, you may want to use it before then, although the cards are good at all Menchie's locations (there is one in Sheboygan). “Life has changed...not ended.”

St. Francis of Assisi Parish, Manitowoc ♦ page 8 “It Takes a Village…” The old saying goes: “it takes a village to raise a child.” I would say “it takes a village to create a healthy and productive village.”

You are certainly aware of the epidemic of substance abuse – both drug and alcohol - that plagues our community, our nation and our world. How do we as a community come together to work to end the epidemic and show our support for those who struggle?

I attended Manitowoc’s Drug Court on Wednesday, August 14 and was so impressed with what I saw and heard that I felt compelled to educate you on the Drug Court process and encourage you to offer your support as a member of this community.

Participants of Drug Court are there on a voluntary basis and are selected based on their willingness to go through a rigorous program aimed at curbing their dependency on drugs and alcohol. The alternative to this is often time in jail. Drug court participants attend Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and/or Narcotics Anonymous (NA) sessions frequently, and participate in intensive case management on a regular basis, mental health services and life skills classes, which include financial literacy and employability skills. In addition, family members as well as concerned citizens show their support for the program and its participants by attending Drug Court on Wednesdays at 9:00 a.m. in Courtroom Number 1 at the Manitowoc County Courthouse . All are welcome!

The process of becoming clean and sober is difficult, but with the support of community behind them, it lightens the load more than you can imagine.

We all have a responsibility to make Manitowoc a healthy and safe community. Can you offer an hour of your time on a Wednesday morning to be a supportive member of the community that gets behind its drug court participants? I encourage you to keep those in drug court and all those who struggle with substance abuse in your prayers. Your prayers and support do make a difference!

Living in the (920) 682-9049 culture of excesses, we rarely feel hungry. We may more often feel jealousy in our society than we feel hunger. Our human desire is to consume in order to satisfy this jealousy or hunger. In times of hunger or longing, we can give thanksgiving to God for all the blessings we do have. We can also in this time of hunger or longing, talk to God where we have fallen short and are in need of forgiveness or penance. This can be a powerful conversation of how we can become closer in union to our God and His people in service. Would you please consider joining me in whatever form of fasting and penitential prayer that you are able? This is not limited to food. Our fasting can take the form of any of our earthly habits or addictions. However you are able to join this effort, would you please include in your prayers, your deepest desires for our local church, our diocese, our priests and most especially for those who do not yet know Christ.
